The Interplay of Inter- and Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding in Ether Alcohols Related to n-Octanol.

n-Octanol and related ether alcohols are studied via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the two classical all-atom force fields OPLS-AA and CHARMM. The ether alcohols studied possess one ether functionality separated by varying n carbon atoms from the hydroxy group to elucidate how the positioning of the ether functionality affects intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding and, in turn, the physical properties of the studied alcohols. Important general trends observed from simulations with both force fields include the following: Intramolecular hydrogen bonding is majorly present in 3-

Role of hydrogen bonding and water clusters in deamidation of peptide in glycerol-water solutions.

The study is part of investigations on relationships between water content, structure, and rates of chemical reactions in amorphous systems. This paper reports Asn deamidation of a hexapeptide in an amorphous liquid matrix, glycerol with water concentration of 1 to 30 wt%, at 50 °C. Using an amorphous liquid system allows focusing on the chemical and structural features of water effects, by minimizing the "molecular mobility" aspect. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is used to quantify both the loss of the parent compound and the accumulation of the cyclic succinimide intermediate

Molecular diffusion in aqueous methanol solutions: The combined influence of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic ends.

Although the nonmonotonic variation in the diffusion coefficients of alcohol and water with changing alcohol concentrations in aqueous solutions has been reported for many years, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the molecular diffusion mechanisms in aqueous methanol solutions. Our findings reveal that the molecular diffusion is co-influenced by hydrogen bonding and the hydrophobic ends of methanol molecules. A stronger hydrogen bond (HB) network and a higher concentration of hydrophobic ends of methanol molecules both enha

Hydrogen-Bonding Integrated Low-Dimensional Flexible Electronics Beyond the Limitations of van der Waals Contacts.

Van der Waals (vdW) integration enables clean contacts for low-dimensional electronic devices. The limitation remains; however, that an additional tunneling contact resistance occurs owing to the inherent vdW gap between the metal and the semiconductor. Here, it is demonstrated from theoretical calculations that stronger non-covalent hydrogen-bonding interactions facilitate electron tunneling and significantly reduce the contact resistance; thus, promising to break the limitations of the vdW contact. π-plane hydrogen-bonding contacts in surface-engineered MXene/carbon nanotube metal/semiconduc

Enantioselective access to tricyclic tetrahydropyran derivatives by a remote hydrogen bonding mediated intramolecular IEDHDA reaction.

Inverse-electron-demand-hetero-Diels-Alder reactions of alkenes with α,β-unsaturated keto compounds allow rapid access to the tetrahydropyran ring found in numerous natural products and bioactive molecules. Despite its synthetic interest, catalytic asymmetric versions of this process remain underdeveloped, especially regarding the use of non-activated alkenes reacting with α,β-unsaturated ketone or aldehyde, for which no report can be found in the literature. Herein, we describe the catalytic inverse-electron-demand-hetero-Diels-Alder reactions between neutral alkenes and an α,β-unsaturated ke

Multiple hydrogen bonding self-assembly tailored electrospun polyimide hybrid filter for efficient air pollution control.

Air pollutions are extremely serious threats to human health and the functional hybrid filter is able to remove complicated pollutants with great potential. However, the stable structure design of hybrid filter to provide efficient filtration and adsorption performance for high temperature applications still remains a challenge. In this study, electrospun polyimide (PI) based hybrid filter was fabricated via multiple hydrogen bonding self-assembly for high-temperature air purification. In particular, Octa(amino-propylsilsesquioxane) (POSS-NH2) was utilized as "bridge" for the surface activatio

Solvation and self-aggregation of chiral alcohols: how hydrogen bonding affects their VCD spectral signatures.

In infrared spectra, intermolecular hydrogen bonds give rise to band shifts of OH-stretching vibrations and intensity enhancements of the hydrogen bonded OH-stretching vibration. The fingerprint region of IR spectra is often not considered in the analysis of hydrogen bonds as the effects are rather weak and often masked by other overlapping vibrational modes. For VCD spectra, however, the fingerprint region is the most important spectral range as it typically contains the strongest and most characteristic VCD patterns. As solute-solvent interactions might significantly alter the observed VCD s

Hydrogen Bonding-Induced Morphology Dependence of Long-Lived Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence: A Computational Study.

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is generally only exhibited in aggregate with strong dependence on morphology, which is highly sensitive to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction. Here, 4,4'-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)methanone (Cz2BP), emitting RTP in a cocrystal consisting of chloroform but not in the amorphous nor in the crystal phase, was investigated to disclose the morphology dependence through molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles calculations. We find that the strong intermolecular C═O···H-C hydrogen bonds between Cz2BP and chloroform in cocrystals decre

Complementary hydrogen bonding of a carboxylato-barbiturate with urea and acetamide: experimental and theoretical approach.

A barbiturate derivative, 4-(2,4,6-trioxo-tetrahydro-pyrimidine-5-ylidenemethyl)-benzoic acid (L1) possessing functional complementarity to amides has been synthesized and characterized. Its binding separately with urea and acetamide was monitored using UV-vis, fluorescence and (1)H-NMR spectroscopic titrations. Experiments suggested stronger binding of L1 with urea as compared to acetamide. The solid adducts of L1 prepared separately with urea and acetamide were also characterized using IR, (1)H-NMR spectral and PXRD techniques. Theoretical studies on hydrogen bonded complexes of L1-urea and

Vibrational overtone spectra of o-fluorophenol and the "anomalous" order of intramolecular hydrogen bonding strengths.

The near infrared vibrational overtone absorption spectrum of liquid phase o-fluorophenol is examined in the region deltav=2, 3 and 4. The OH frequencies are compared with that of o-chlorophenol and phenol. Considering the relative electronegativities of all halogens, one might expect the order of intramolecular hydrogen bond strength for o-fluorophenol to be the greatest among all halogenophenols. It is evident that o-fluorophenol forms a weaker intramolecular hydrogen bond (an anomalous trend) contrary to that expected from relative electronegativities of halogens. The local mode mechanical

Hydrogen bonding dynamics during protein folding of reduced cytochrome c: temperature and denaturant concentration dependence.

Folding dynamics of reduced cytochrome c triggered by the laser-induced reduction method is investigated from a viewpoint of the intermolecular interaction change. Change of the diffusion coefficient of cytochrome c during the refolding process is traced in the time domain from the unfolded value to the native value continuously at various denaturant (guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCl)) concentrations and temperatures. In the temperature range of 288 K-308 K and GdnHCl concentration range of 2.5 M-4.25 M, the diffusion change can be analyzed well by the two-state model consistently. It was found

Self-assembly using dynamic coordination chemistry and hydrogen bonding: mercury(II) macrocycles, polymers and sheets.

The self-assembly of extended metal-containing arrays is described based on dynamic coordination chemistry at mercury(II) with bis(amidopyridyl) ligands to form macrocycles, polymers, or sheets which can be further organized by hydrogen bonding between amide substituents. The ligands 1,2-C6H4[NHC(O)-4-C5H4N]2, 1, 1,2-C(6)H(4)[C(O)NHCH(2)-4-C(5)H(4)N](2), 2, and 1,2-C(6)H(4)[CH(2)C(O)NHCH(2)-4-C(5)H(4)N]2, 3 can adopt polar conformations and so can confer helicity in their complexes. Hydrogen-bonding interactions in the active sites of cytochrome P450cam and its site-directed mutants.

Resonance Raman spectroscopy is applied to the cyanide adducts of cytochrome P450cam and its T252A and D251N site-directed mutants, both in their substrate-free and camphor-bound forms, to probe active-site heme structure and, in particular, interactions of the FeCN fragment with potential active-site H-bond donors. In contrast to the ferrous CO and ferric NO adducts, which form only essentially linear (slightly distorted) FeXY fragments, the spectra of the ferric CN(-) adducts provide clear evidence the for the existence of an additional, rather highly bent, conformer; that is, the cyanide co

Characterization of hydrogen bonding between selected barbiturates and polyethylene glycol 4000 by IR spectral analysis.

Several barbiturates and primidone were equilibrated with polyethylene glycol 4000 in pyridine. IR spectral properties of these samples indicate that seven disubstituted barbiturates complex with polyethylene glycol 4000 while five disubstituted barbiturates and two trisubstituted barbiturates as well as primidone do not. Forces responsible for complexation of barbiturates with polyethylene glycol 4000, as inferred from spectral data, consist of hydrogen bonds formed between N1 and N3 hydrogens of the barbiturate ring and two oxygen atoms of the --O--CH2CH2--O--moiety. Also, there appear to be

Controlling Product Selectivity by Modulating H-Bonding and the Rate of Hydrogen Elimination and Hydrogen Transfer from an Ir(III)-H Complex.

Harnessing key intermediates in metal-catalyzed reactions enables highly selective organic transformations. Herein, we report an Ir(III)-catalyzed strategy for the selective synthesis of benzimidazoles and N-methylbenzimidazoles from diverse 2-nitroanilines and 1,2-diaminobenzenes using methanol. Solvent-controlled stabilization of the imine intermediate governed product selectivity: TFE favored benzimidazole formation, whereas methanol promoted rapid hydrogenation to N-methylbenzimidazoles. Mechanistic studies, supported by control experiments and DFT calculations, revealed the crucial role o

Guest-Driven Flexibility in a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for NH3 Capture.

Ammonia (NH3) capture and low-energy release remain a critical challenge in adsorptive separation. Herein, we report a guest-driven flexible hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF), designated FDU-HOF-7, constructed from 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid. The as-synthesized material is nonporous and undergoes a reversible crystalline phase transition upon NH3 adsorption and desorption. During this process, the original COOH···COOH hydrogen-bonding network is replaced by a set of energetically favorable charge-assisted hydrogen bonds (CAHBs), including COO-···HOOC, COO-···NH3, COO-···NH4+, and NH

Engineering Dynamic Proton "Hubs" in Hydrogen-Bonded Frameworks for Superprotonic Conductivity.

Mimicking the synergistic proton conduction in biology remains a formidable challenge for synthetic materials. Here, we report a strategic approach by engineering dynamic proton "hubs" within hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs). These hubs are supramolecular secondary building units (SSBUs) formed by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds between ammonium and sulfonate groups, which are programmed into the frameworks to direct proton traffic. The resulting ammonium-sulfonate HOF, BPDS_NH4, exhibits a highly competitive proton conductivity of 0.21 S cm-1 (90°C, 90% RH). The exceptional performanc

Boron-Oxo Cluster-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Framework for Luminescent Tuning.

A zinc boron-oxo cluster-based structure ({Zn2(μ2-OH)(Dmg)4[B3O3(OH)] [B6O7(OH)2]}, BOC-23) was synthesized solvothermally using a dioxime (DmgH2) ligand. Two polyboroxole units ([B3O7(OH)] and [B6O11(OH)2]) are linked to Dmg via oxygen-sharing, forming an organic-inorganic hybrid macrocyclic cluster coordinating two Zn2+ ions. Peripheral hydroxyl groups of the cluster facilitate the formation of a 3D hydrogen-bonded network in BOC-23 through intermolecular O-H···O interactions, forming a rigid framework that enhances stability and modulates guest luminescence via confinement. Systematic studi

Potassium-Ligand Cooperation Facilitated Chemical Bond Activation and Catalytic Hydrogenation.

Replacing conventional transition metals with main-group elements for chemical bond activation and catalysis is of increasing interest, yet alkali metals remain largely underexplored in this context. Herein, we introduce a new strategy for alkali metal-mediated catalysis based on metal-ligand cooperation (MLC) driven by dearomatization-aromatization of the ligand. Potassium pincer complexes bearing dearomatized picolyl ligands were synthesized and shown to activate a variety of molecules, including CO2, CS2, phenyl iso(thio)cyanates, ketones, and H2, thereby enabling the design of alkali metal

The hydrogen bond between tryptophan and the host molecule induced fluorescence enhancement.

Tryptophan is one of important amino acids in the human body, therefore its detection is particularly important. The 3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (BPAT) organic molecule was designed to be used as fluorescence detectors to detect tryptophan molecules for the interaction between the host and the guest. BPAT shows good sensitivity and selectivity towards tryptophan compared with other amino acid molecules. The limit of detection obtained from formula 3δ/KSV is considered to be 5.43 × 10-7  mol/L. We speculated that this change is mainly caused by the hydrogen bond between tryptophan
