Chromatic differential confocal matrix-based 3D topography and hyperspectral imaging with deep learning for osteoarthritis grading.

Accurate assessment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is limited by the current arthroscopy's reliance on subjective visual inspection. We propose a 3D spatio-spectral automatic grading framework combining deep learning with chromatic differential confocal matrix-based 3D topography and hyperspectral imaging (CDCM-THI). Our digital micromirror device-based system simultaneously captures high-resolution 3D micro-topography and hyperspectral cartilage signatures (lateral: 3.91 µm, axial: 1.96 µm, spectral: ∼15 nm). To analyze this multi-modal data, we developed an improved ResNet50 late fusion networ

Differential Diagnosis of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and Nodular Goiter With Papillary Hyperplasia Using Hyperspectral Imaging Technology.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and nodular goiter with papillary hyperplasia (NGPH) share similar histological features, complicating both preoperative and intraoperative diagnoses. We assessed hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with deep learning to differentiate PTC from NGPH. Forty-three paraffin-embedded PTC and 39 NGPH samples were imaged across 400-1000 nm, with reflectance calibration and Savitzky-Golay smoothing applied. Extracted spectral features were input into a one-dimensional convolutional neural network with a self-attention mechanism. HSI demonstrated sensitivity above 90%

Hyperspectral Imaging Technology Empowering Dynamic Monitoring of VOCs: A Breakthrough High-Spatial-Temporal Resolution Detection Method.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their secondary pollutants pose significant risks to both the environment and human health. In response to air pollution control policies, the emissions of conventional pollutants, such as NO2 and SO2, have been preliminarily controlled. As a result, the reduction of VOC emissions has become a key measure for further improving air quality. Industrial activities are the primary anthropogenic source of VOCs, highlighting the urgent need for effective methods to detect VOC plume concentrations and monitor their dispersion and transport. This study proposes a

Hyperspectral imaging combined with blood oxygen saturation for in vivo analysis of small intestinal necrosis tissue.

Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a clinically significant vascular and gastrointestinal condition, which is closely related to the blood supply of the small intestine. Unfortunately, it is still challenging to properly discriminate small intestinal tissues with different degrees of ischemia. In this study, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) was used to construct pseudo-color images of oxygen saturation about small intestinal tissues and to discriminate different degrees of ischemia. First, several small intestine tissue models of New Zealand white rabbits were prepared and collected their hyperspec

Optimisation of an Industrial Optical Sorter of Legumes for Gluten-Free Production Using Hyperspectral Imaging Techniques.

The market demand for gluten-free food is increasing due to the growing gluten sensitivity and coeliac disease (CD) in the population. The market requires grass-free cereals to produce gluten-free food. This requires sorting methods that guarantee the perfect separation of gluten contaminants from the legumes. The objective of the research was the development of an optical sorting system based on hyperspectral image processing, capable of identifying the spectral characteristics of the products under investigation to obtain a statistical classifier capable of enabling the total elimination of

Classification of Chicken Carcass Breast Blood-Related Defects Using Hyperspectral Imaging Combined with Convolutional Neural Networks.

For chicken carcass breast blood-related defects (CBDs), which occur with high frequency, the visual features are approximated in terms of the similarity of the composition of these defects, making it challenging to classify them, either manually or automatically, using conventional machine vision. The aim of this paper was to introduce a method of CBD classification based on hyperspectral imaging combined with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). To process hyperspectral data, the Improved Firefly Band Selection Algorithm was constructed with the 1-D CNN CBD classification model as the objec

METAPHOR: Metabolic evaluation through phasor-based hyperspectral imaging and organelle recognition for mouse blastocysts and oocytes.

Only 30% of embryos from in vitro fertilized oocytes successfully implant and develop to term, leading to repeated transfer cycles. To reduce time-to-pregnancy and stress for patients, there is a need for a diagnostic tool to better select embryos and oocytes based on their physiology. The current standard employs brightfield imaging, which provides limited physiological information. Here, we introduce METAPHOR: Metabolic Evaluation through Phasor-based Hyperspectral Imaging and Organelle Recognition. This non-invasive, label-free imaging method combines two-photon illumination and AI to deliv

VOCs hyperspectral imaging: A new insight into evaluate emissions and the corresponding health risk from industries.

The harm of VOCs emitted from industries to surrounding atmospheric environment and human health was well known and had received continuous attention. In order to improve the quality of urban atmospheric environment and the living environment of urban residents, a large number of original urban industries had been relocated to economically underdeveloped suburbs, which has significantly deteriorated the atmospheric environment in these areas and brought potential health risks to local vulnerable residents, which is actually an unfair manifestation under the background of economic development a

Monitoring the biochemical alterations in hypertension affected salivary gland tissues using Fourier transform infrared hyperspectral imaging.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) imaging has been applied to investigate biochemical differences between salivary glands from control and hypertensive rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups including a control group and another hypertension group that were treated orally, with N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME) via drinking water for 3 weeks to develop hypertension. In the control group, rats were treated with only drinking water for 3 weeks. The formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue specimens from submandibular and sublingual glands were analysed wit

Lightweight residual deep learning framework for urea and formalin adulteration detection in milk using hyperspectral imaging.

Milk adulteration is a major concern for dairy quality and food safety, especially when harmful adulterants such as urea and formalin are present at closely related concentration levels that are difficult to distinguish. This study proposes a lightweight Squeeze-and-Excitation Residual 1D Network (SE-ResNet1D) combined with Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) to detect the presence of urea and formalin in milk at a finer level. A custom hyperspectral milk dataset was developed using a Resonon Pika L system from the 400 nm to 1000 nm wavelength range over 300 bands, including pure milk and closely spac

Emerging non-invasive tools for hair follicle assessment: a narrative review on hyperspectral and terahertz imaging.

Hair loss, though often dismissed as cosmetic, reflects complex vascular, metabolic, structural, and inflammatory changes within the scalp microenvironment. Conventional diagnostic tools such as visual inspection, dermoscopy, trichoscopy, and biopsy remain limited in their ability to determine these evolving processes non-invasively. Recent advances in optical physics and biomedical engineering have introduced light- and wave-based imaging approaches that may expand scalp diagnostics beyond surface visualization. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and terahertz (THz) imaging have demonstrated compara

Hyperspectral imaging of liverwort Marchantia polymorpha identifies MpWRKY10 as a key regulator defining Foliar pigmentation patterns.

Foliar pigmentation patterns vary among plant species and growth conditions. In this study, we utilize hyperspectral imaging to assess foliar pigmentation in the bryophyte Marchantia polymorpha under nutrient stress and identify associated genetic factors. Using singular value decomposition (SVD) for feature selection, we quantitate color variations induced by deficiencies in phosphate, nitrate, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Pseudo-colored thallus images show that disrupting MpWRKY10 causes irregular pigmentation with auronidin accumulation. Transcriptomic profiling shows that MpWRKY10 regulat

Automatic detection of ischemic necrotic sites in small intestinal tissue using hyperspectral imaging and transfer learning.

Acquiring large amounts of hyperspectral data of small intestinal tissue with real labels in the clinic is difficult, and the data shows inter-patient variability. Building an automatic identification model using a small dataset presents a crucial challenge in obtaining a strong generalization of the model. This study aimed to explore the performance of hyperspectral imaging and transfer learning techniques in the automatic identification of normal and ischemic necrotic sites in small intestinal tissue. Hyperspectral data of small intestinal tissues were collected from eight white rabbit sampl

Hyperspectral imaging to accurately segment skin erythema and hyperpigmentation in cutaneous chronic graft-versus-host disease.

In 51 lesions from 15 patients with the inflammatory skin condition chronic graft-versus-host-disease, hyperspectral imaging accurately delineated active erythema and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The method was validated by dermatologist-approved confident delineations of only definitely affected and definitely unaffected areas in photographs. A prototype hyperspectral imaging system acquired a 2.5 × 3.5 cm2 area of skin at 120 wavelengths in the 450-850 nm range. Unsupervised extraction of unknown absorbers by endmember analysis achieved a comparable accuracy to that of supervised ext

Development and performance validation of a low-cost algorithms-based hyperspectral imaging system for radiodermatitis assessment.

Whilst radiotherapy (RT) is widely used for cancer treatment, radiodermatitis caused by RT is one most common severe side effect affecting 95% cancer patients. Accurate radiodermatitis assessment and classification is essential to adopt timely treatment, management and monitoring, which all depend on reliable and objective tools for radiodermatitis grading. We therefore, in this work, reported the development and grading performance validation of a low-cost (∼2318.2 CNY) algorithms-based hyperspectral imaging (aHSI) system for radiodermatitis assessment. The low-cost aHSI system was enabled th

Identifying molecular contributors to autofluorescence of neoplastic and normal colon sections using excitation-scanning hyperspectral imaging.

Autofluorescence, the endogenous fluorescence present in cells and tissues, has historically been considered a nuisance in biomedical imaging. Many endogenous fluorophores, specifically, collagen, elastin, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), are found throughout the human body. In fluorescence imaging scenarios, these signals can be prohibitive as they can outcompete signals introduced for diagnostic purposes. However, autofluorescence also contains information that has diagnostic value. Recent advances in hyperspectral imaging have allowed the acquisition

Coexpression of CdSe and CdSe/CdS quantum dots in live cells using molecular hyperspectral imaging technology.

A direct spatial and spectral observation of CdSe and CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) as probes in live cells is performed by using a custom molecular hyperspectral imaging (MHI) system. Water-soluble CdSe and CdSe/CdS QDs are synthesized in aqueous solution under the assistance of high-intensity ultrasonic irradiation and incubated with colon cancer cells for bioimaging. Unlike the traditional fluorescence microscopy methods, MHI technology can identify QD probes according to their spectral signatures and generate coexpression and stain titer maps by a clustering method.
