Coeliac disease is an autoinflammatory condition caused by immune reactions to cereal gluten proteins. Currently, the only available treatment for the condition is a lifelong avoidance of gluten proteins in the diet. There is an unmet need for alternative therapies. PROBLEM: Testicular macrophages (TMf) participate together with Sertoli cells in formation of blood-testis barrier. The present experiments were aimed to test their immunoregulatory functions in vivo and in vitro.
METHOD OF STUDY: TMf were purified by glass adherence, rosetting with opsonized erythrocytes and fractionation on discontinuous Percoll gradient (over 95% purity). Exposure of C57BL/6 mice to highly irradiated (50 kR) cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni leads to the development of partial resistance against subsequent challenge with unattenuated cercariae. Sheep red blood cells can surround, in vitro, some human peripheral blood lymphocytes in a formation called a rosette. The number of rosetteforming cells (RFC) in 50 normal persons had a wide range (4-40%). The organs of 13 human fetuses (11-19 wk conceptional age) were examined for the presence of RFC. The thymus possessed the highest percentage of RFC, the maximum being 65% of total thymocytes in two 15-16 wk fetal specimens. 43 patients with glomerular disease and 15 healthy children from 2-15 years of age were examined for the presence of cell mediated immunity against enzymatically solubilized glomerular basement membranes. Peripheral lymphocytes of 3 patients with acute hemorrhagic glomerulonephritis, 10 children with chronic glomerulonephritis and 2 children with congenital nephrotic syndrome showed positive reactivity in form of rosette formation. The application of the test for differential diagnosis between different glomerular diseases is discussed.

Inflammatory reactions to the lung fluke, Paragonimus westermani, in an abnormal host, the rat, were studied by electron microscopy. Microbial keratitis with Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common corneal infection associated with contact lenses (CLs). Pseudomonas organisms are ubiquitous in nature, and can colonize CLs without a prior breach in lens care or hygiene. We have investigated lymphocyte subpopulations (six different markers) and T cell functions (mitogen responses and serum thymic factor determination) in twenty patients with psoriasis compared with thirty-five healthy subjects. Normal results were found for B cell markers, but significantly lower numbers of T cells were assessed by E-rosettes and anti HTLA serum. Mitogen responses were significantly higher in psoriasis than in normal subjects of the same age. These findings could be in favour of a T cell subpopulation defect involved in an auto-immune pathogenesis of psoriasis.

The specific red cell adherence (SRCA) test used previously as a prognostic indicator of bladder tumors was used in a retrospective review of 14 patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter and renal pelvis. SRCA-positive individuals appear to have better survival and progress less frequently to metastatic disease. Of five patients with positive reactions, none had distant metastases.
