The role of corneal epithelial thickness parameters with different degrees of keratoconus in the diagnosis of keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic value of corneal epithelial thickness parameters measured by RTVue XR OCT in different stages of keratoconus. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of 64 patients (64 eyes) with keratoconus who visited from January 2021 to December 2023. The control group randomly had 46 patients (46 eyes) with refractive errors. The RTVue XR OCT was used to measure the distribution and parameter indicators of corneal epithelial thickness in various regions of the normal corneal group. We measured parameters with statistically significant differences and calculated cutoff

Prevalence of keratoconus and keratoconus suspect, and their characteristics on corneal tomography in a population-based study.

Keratoconus (KC) is a progressive corneal disorder resulting in severe visual impairment. We aimed to determine the prevalence and corneal tomographic characteristics of KC and keratoconus suspect (KCS) in a population-based study, and to construct discrimination models with or without corneal tomography. A total of 1,544 eyes (822 participants aged ≥35 years) were evaluated using data from the Yamagata Study (2015-2017). Systemic and ophthalmological examinations including corneal tomography with swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) were conducted to determine t

Differences in central and non-central keratoconus, and their effect on the objective screening thresholds for keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the differences in central and non-central keratoconus (based on cone location), and their effect on the objective screening thresholds for keratoconus. METHODS: This comparative case series was performed at tertiary care cornea and refractive surgery service. Three groups were made: KC apex within central 2 mm (central keratoconus, n = 50), apex outside central 2mm (non-central keratoconus, n = 50) and normal controls (n = 100, with 50 cases each with apex within and outside central 2 mm). All cases underwent clinical evaluation and corneal topography (CSO, Sirius, Italy

METHODS: SCKC (n = 28), KC Stage I (n = 25), KC Stage II (n = 40), KC Stage III (n = 35), KC Stage IV (n = 26), and normal eyes (n = 46) were analyzed using the Oculus Pentacam HR. Comparisons between groups were assessed using Kruskal-Wallis and pairwise comparison Dunn tests. PURPOSE: To assess the performance of multiple intraocular lens (IOL) formulas in eyes with keratoconus. METHODS: Eyes with stable keratoconus scheduled for cataract surgery with biometry measurements on the Lenstar LS900 (Haag-Streit) were included. Prediction errors were calculated using 11 different formulas, including two with keratoconus modifiers. Primary outcomes compared standard deviations, mean and median numerical errors, and percentage of eyes within diopter (D) ranges across all eyes with subgroup analysis according to anterior keratometric values. RESULTS: Sixty-eight eyes from

Diagnostic Accuracy of Corneal and Epithelial Thickness Map Parameters to Detect Keratoconus and Suspect Keratoconus.

AIM: To establish the diagnostic accuracy of corneal and epithelial thickness measurements obtained by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in detecting keratoconus (KC) and suspect keratoconus (SKC). METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed the data of 144 eyes separated into three groups by the Sirius automated corneal classification software: normal (N) (n = 65), SKC (n = 43), and KC (n = 36). Corneal thickness (CT) and epithelial thickness (ET) in the central (0-2 mm) and paracentral (2-5 mm) zones were obtained with the Cirrus high-definition OCT. Areas under the curve

The ABCD Keratoconus Grading System-A Useful Tool to Estimate Keratoconus Progression in the Pediatric Population.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ABCD grading system in pediatric keratoconus. METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis of all children with keratoconus followed up at the Shamir medical center between 2010 and 2017. A recommendation by the treating physician to undergo corneal crosslinking (CXL) was used as an estimate for clinically significant disease progression. The ABCD grading was not available to the treating physician and was computed post hoc. The ABCD grading was compared between patients who required CXL with those who did not. A single eye of each patient was included. RESULTS: Fifty ey

Keratoconus staging by decades: a baseline ABCD classification of 1000 patients in the Homburg Keratoconus Center.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective cross-sectional study aims to analyse the keratoconus (KC) stage distribution at different ages within the Homburg Keratoconus Center (HKC). METHODS: 1917 corneae (1000 patients) were allocated to decades of age, classified according to Belin's ABCD KC grading system and the stage distribution was analysed. RESULTS: 73 per cent (n=728) of the patients were males, 27% (n=272) were females. The highest KC prevalence occurred between 21 and 30 years (n=585 corneae, 294 patients). Regarding anterior (A) and posterior (B) curvature, the frequency of A was significan

KTCNlncDB-a first platform to investigate lncRNAs expressed in human keratoconus and non-keratoconus corneas.

Keratoconus (KTCN, OMIM 148300) is a degenerative eye disorder characterized by progressive stromal thinning that leads to a conical shape of the cornea, resulting in optical aberrations and even loss of visual function. The biochemical background of the disease is poorly understood, which motivated us to perform RNA-Seq experiment, aimed at better characterizing the KTCN transcriptome and identification of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that might be involved in KTCN etiology. The in silico functional studies based on predicted lncRNA:RNA base-pairings led us to recognition of a number of lnc
