BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis patients are prone to gastrointestinal bleeding, and Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS) is one of the causes. Mallory-Weiss syndrome is often induced by severe vomiting, manifests as upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and is self-limited with a good prognosis. However, mild vomiting in hemodialysis patients can lead to the occurrence of MWS, and the mild early symptoms are easy to misdiagnose, leading to the aggravation of the disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper, we report four hemodialysis patients with MWS. All patients displayed symptoms of upper gastrointestinal ble…

Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS) is a well-defined entity in clinical medicine. However, the development of such a syndrome as a result of overpressure barotrauma of the stomach after repeated shallow-water scuba dives is rare. Also rare is the delayed onset of the MWS, approximately 20 hours after the dives. The causes of development of MWS in connection with scuba diving are discussed. The main causes seem to be the repeated changes of gas volume in the stomach with subsequent pressure forces toward the cardia in the course of repeated dives. The possibility of serious diving accident due to ove…

The authors presented the results of diagnostic and therapeutic esophagogastroduodenoscopy in the Mallory-Weiss syndrome observed in patients with acute ++non-caustic poisoning. Altogether 47 patients were investigated for suspected gastrointestinal bleeding. The Mallory-Weiss syndrome was detected in 20 (42.5%) patients. Therapeutic endoscopic intervention was performed in 5 cases of this syndrome to stop bleeding.

Twenty five cases of Mallory-Weiss syndrome were visualised endoscopically, representing, 4,6 p.cent of a serie of 540 consecutive upper gastro-intestinal bleedings. More frequent in men (85%) the mucosal laceration of the oesogastric junction caracteristic of the Mallory-Weiss syndrome is caused by a sudded intra-abdominal hyperpression. The lession is often associated with a prodrome of vomiting (80%). A hiatal hernia (80%), the ingestion of gastrotoxic drugs (52%) or of excessive alcohol (28%) are favorising factors. Emergency endoscopy allows an accurate diagnosis. The severity of the gast…

BACKGROUND: Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS), representing a linear mucosal laceration at the gastroesophageal junction, is a quite frequent cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, usually induced by habitual vomiting. The subsequent cardiac ulceration in this condition is likely due to the concomitance of increased intragastric pressure and inappropriate closure of the gastroesophageal sphincter, collectively inducing ischemic mucosal damage. Usually, MWS is associated with all vomiting conditions, but it has also been described as a complication of prolonged endoscopic procedures or ingested f…

There is no consensus as to the best treatment for Mallory-Weiss tears with severe bleeding. Endoscopic ligation is an inexpensive, readily available, and easily learned technique, in contrast to conventional thermocoagulation or hemoclipping. To evaluate the utility of endoscopic ligation, we performed this technique during emergency endoscopy to treat severe bleeding from Mallory-Weiss tears in four patients in our hospital with continuous active bleeding from Mallory-Weiss tears. The patients were all male with an average age of 40.5 years. Symptoms associated with increased intra-abdominal

A young presented to the emergency department after ingesting multiple drugs. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding developed after emesis was induced with syrup of ipecac. A small Mallory-Weiss tear of the cardioesophageal junction was found at endoscopy. This case is presented to alert physicians to this uncommon complication of ipecac-induced emesis.

Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS) is a relatively less common cause of nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding. There is limited data on whether scoring systems could be used to predict the clinical outcomes in patients with bleeding due to MWS. The aim of our study is to evaluate whether the Glasgow-Blatchford score (GBS), AIMS65, and shocking index are effective in predicting the clinical outcomes of MWS.One hundred twenty-eight patients from January 2010 to January 2017 with MWS in middle China were enrolled. Clinical features such as age, gender, causes of vomiting, endoscopic findings, GBS…

Eighty percent of hemophiliacs exposed to plasma products are seropositive to hepatitis B and an even higher percentage are seropositive to hepatitis C. Post-transfusion hepatitis is followed by cirrhosis in up to 25% of the cases. In the wake of portal hypertension, the development of oesophageal varices entails the risk of life-threatening hemorrhage. We report on a patient with moderate hemophilia A (factor VIII:C 4-11%) who suffered from massive hematemesis, melaena and evolving shock after excessive alcohol ingestion. The diagnosis of Mallory-Weiss syndrome and the differential diagnosis …

A 1-month-old girl presented with hematemesis and dyspnea. A large amount of blood was aspirated through a nasogastric tube, and chest compu … ission. Afterward, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a longitudinal linear scar indicative of Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS). MWS is rarely reported in early infancy since many of the risk factors are absent in infants. Patients with aspiration pneumonitis usually recover respiratory function within 24 h and severe respiratory failure is rare in aspiration pneumonit …
