Testing a social mechanism of recovery high schools: Peer affiliation as a mediator of substance use outcomes.

PURPOSE: Limited options for developmentally appropriate continuing care represent a critical barrier for youth in recovery. As one of the few options designed specifically for adolescents, recovery high schools (RHSs) warrant investigation to better understand their effects and the mechanisms through which they operate. This study examined the long-term effects of RHS attendance and tested whether peer-level social change operates as a mechanism. METHODS: Data were drawn from a longitudinal, group-design study of RHS effectiveness. Twelve-month follow-up substance use outcomes were compared

Animal Models of Aortic Aneurysm and Dissection: A Comparative Guide for Mechanism, Therapeutic Testing, and Translational Readouts.

Aortic aneurysms and dissections are devastating vascular diseases with high mortality, yet no pharmacological therapy has proven effective in halting growth or preventing rupture. Surgical and endovascular repair remain the only treatment options for advanced disease. Animal models have been indispensable in defining mechanisms and testing candidate therapies, but the diversity of protocols, strain-dependent variability, and heterogeneous endpoints complicate interpretation and translation. This review provides an update focused on how to match models to specific research questions. We critic

Cryptorchidism-induced disruption of TRPM8 expression and calcium signaling in canine testes: A potential mechanism for tumourigenesis.

Cryptorchidism is a condition where one or both testes fail to descend, increasing the risk of tumour development. This study investigated histological and molecular changes in canine cryptorchid testes, focusing on the TRPM8 calcium channel and its potential role in tumour-related signaling pathways. Histological and molecular changes in cryptorchid canine testes, focusing on the role of TRPM8, as well as the expression of PRKCA, MAPK1, and MAPK3 at both mRNA and protein levels, and intracellular calcium ion (Ca2 +) accumulation. Testicular tissues were collected from 14 middle-aged canine, i

Finite element analysis of mandibular fracture fixation authenticated by 3D printed mandible mechanical testing.

Finite element analysis (FEA) for mandibular fracture fixation in craniomaxillofacial surgery remains promising but has been restricted due to the absence of an authenticated FEA model. This study aims to create an authenticated FEA model. This model was verified through a series of 3D printed mandible mechanical testing (3D-MMT) in a universal tensile machine using an indistinguishable set-up. Non-comminuted mandibular symphysis, parasymphysis, and angle fracture fixation stability were evaluated using a 2.0 mm 4-hole miniplate in three different plate configurations. Both FEA and 3D-MMT outc

Group metacognitive therapy for children and adolescents with anxiety and depression: A preliminary trial and test of proposed mechanisms.

Preliminary research supports the feasibility of metacognitive therapy (MCT) in children with generalized anxiety, but the effectiveness of MCT in treating children with other anxiety and depressive disorders largely remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects associated with MCT in targeting symptoms of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents and to investigate mechanisms proposed by the metacognitive model. Ninety-seven participants aged 10-17 years (M = 12.9 ± 1.9, 82.5 % females) with anxiety and depressive disorders received eight sessions of group

Mechanics of lumenless pacing lead strength during extraction procedures based on laboratory bench testing.

BACKGROUND: With the advent of conduction system pacing, use of the Medtronic SelectSecure Model 3830 lead has increased substantially. However, with this increased use, the potential need for lead extraction also will increase. Lumenless lead construction requires an understanding of both applicable tensile forces as well as lead preparation techniques that can influence consistent extraction. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to use bench testing methodologies to characterize the physical properties of lumenless leads and to describe related lead preparation methods that support know

Rumination Induction Task in fMRI: Test-Retest Reliability in Youth and Potential Mechanisms of Change with Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a transdiagnostic problem that is common in major depressive disorder (MDD). Rumination Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (RF-CBT) explicitly targets the ruminative habit. This study examined changes in brain activation during a rumination induction task in adolescents with remitted MDD following RF-CBT. We also evaluated the reliability of the rumination task among adolescents who received treatment as usual (TAU). METHOD: Fifty-five adolescents ages 14-17 completed a self-relevant rumination induction fMRI task and were then randomized to either RF-CBT (n = 30)

Microstructure and mechanics of the bovine trachea: Layer specific investigations through SHG imaging and biaxial testing.

The trachea is a complex tissue made up of hyaline cartilage, fibrous tissue, and muscle fibers. Currently, the knowledge of microscopic structural organization of these components and their role in determining the tissue's mechanical response is very limited. The purpose of this study is to provide data on the microstructure of the tracheal components and its influence on tissue's mechanical response. Five bovine tracheae were used in this study. Adventitia, cartilage, mucosa/submucosa, and trachealis muscle layers were methodically cut out from the whole tissue. Second-harmonic generation(SH

Biomechanical duality of fracture healing captured using virtual mechanical testing and validated in ovine bones.

Bone fractures commonly repair by forming a bridging structure called callus, which begins as soft tissue and gradually ossifies to restore rigidity to the bone. Virtual mechanical testing is a promising technique for image-based assessment of structural bone healing in both preclinical and clinical settings, but its accuracy depends on the validity of the material model used to assign tissue mechanical properties. The goal of this study was to develop a constitutive model for callus that captures the heterogeneity and biomechanical duality of the callus, which contains both soft tissue and wo

The sheep as a pre-clinical model for testing intra-aortic percutaneous mechanical circulatory support devices.

The save deployment of intra-aortic percutaneous mechanical circulatory support devices is highly dependent on the inner aortic diameter. Finding the anatomically and ethically most suitable animal model for performance testing of new pMCS devices remains challenging. For this study, an ovine model using adult ewes of a large framed breed (Swiss White Alpine Sheep) was developed to test safety, reliability, and biocompatibility of catheter-mounted mechanical support devices placed in the descending thoracic aorta. Following the drawback of fluctuating aortic diameter and device malfunction in

Identification, In Vitro Testing and Molecular Docking Studies of Microginins' Mechanism of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibition.

Cyanobacteria are able to produce a wide range of secondary metabolites, including toxins and protease inhibitors, with diverse biological activities. Microginins are small linear peptides biosynthesized by cyanobacteria species that act against proteases. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify microginins produced by the LTPNA08 strain of Microcystis aeruginosa, as well as to verify their potential to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE; EC. 3.4.15.1) using in vitro and in silico methods. The fractionation of cyanobacterial extracts was performed by liquid chromatography and

Mechanical testing and non-linear viscoelastic modelling of the human placenta in normal and growth restricted pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) is a disease where the placenta is unable to transfer enough nutrients to the fetus, limiting its growth, and resulting in high mortality and life-long morbidities. Current detection rates of IUGR are poor, resulting in limited disease management. Elastography is a promising non-invasive tool for the detection of IUGR, and works by detecting changes in the mechanical properties of the placenta. To date, however, it is not known whether IUGR placentas have different mechanical properties from normal ones, and thus investigating this is the firs

Tramadol and Tramadol+Caffeine Synergism in the Rat Formalin Test Are Mediated by Central Opioid and Serotonergic Mechanisms.

Different analgesic combinations with caffeine have shown this drug to be capable of increasing the analgesic effect. Many combinations with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been carried out, but, in regard to opioids, only combinations with morphine and tramadol have been reported. The antinociceptive synergism mechanism of these combinations is not well understood. The purpose of the present study was to determine the participation of spinal and supraspinal opioidergic and serotonergic systems in the synergic effect of the tramadol+caffeine combination in the rat formalin t

Head impact mechanisms of a child occupant seated in a child restraint system as determined by impact testing.

In side collision accidents, the head is the most frequently injured body region for child occupants seated in a child restraint system (CRS). Accident analyses show that a child's head can move out of the CRS shell, make hard contact with the vehicle interior, and thus sustain serious injuries. In order to improve child head protection in side collisions, it is necessary to understand the injury mechanism of a child in the CRS whose head makes contact with the vehicle interior. In this research, an SUV-to-car oblique side crash test was conducted to reconstruct such head contacts. A Q3s child

Mechanical testing of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 regenerated bone in sheep mandibles.

A new method was developed in this study for testing excised sheep mandibles as a cantilever. The method was used to determine the strength and stiffness of sheep hemi-mandibles including a 35 mm defect bridged by regenerated bone. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 (rhBMP-7) in a bovine collagen type-I carrier was used for the bone regeneration. Initial tests on ten intact sheep mandibles confirmed that the strength, stiffness and area beneath the load-deformation curves of the right and left hemi-mandibles were not significantly different, confirming the validity of using the con

The adenosine triphosphate test: a bedside diagnostic tool for identifying the mechanism of supraventricular tachycardia in patients with palpitations.

OBJECTIVES: This study assesses the value of the "ATP test" (injection of adenosine triphosphate [ATP] during sinus rhythm) for identifying patients with palpitations of unclear etiology who actually have atrioventricular (AV) nodal re-entry tachycardia (AVNRT) or AV re-entry tachycardia (AVRT). BACKGROUND: Because AVNRT and AVRT can be cured with radiofrequency ablation, documentation of spontaneous AVNRT or AVRT usually prompts referral for electrophysiologic (EP) evaluation. However, these paroxysmal arrhythmias may elude clinical diagnosis. We recently showed that administration of ATP du

Mechanisms of syncope caused by transient bradycardia and the diagnostic value of electrophysiologic testing and cardiovascular reflexivity maneuvers.

Transient bradycardia may be intrinsic because of sinus node or atrioventricular (AV) conduction abnormalities, or extrinsic because of abnormal vagal reflex. Twenty-five consecutive patients, referred to us for study of unexplained syncope, who, during electrocardiographic monitoring, had a documented episode of intermittent bradycardia that caused syncope, underwent a full electrophysiologic study, carotid sinus massage, and the head-up tilt test. A prolonged ventricular asystole (5 to 20 seconds) was documented during syncope in all patients: sinus arrest in 13, AV block in 7, sinus arrest
