[The experience of menstruation and its disorders in 603 women using contraception in 1999].

AIM: An epidemiological survey completed during the first quarter of 1999 assesses the frequency of menstrual disorders as well as their effects on the lives of women using contraception. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The results presented involve a sample of 603 women, with 405 using the pill and 198 fitted with an IUD. The average age of onset of menstruation in the sampled population was 12.8 years. Although most women declared that they felt no anxiety at the time, over one-third of the women surveyed explained that they felt a certain hesitancy in discussing the topic. Even today, certain feeli

The WeThrive App and Its Impact on Adolescents Who Menstruate: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) affects up to 37% of adolescents. Without recognition, HMB can lead to other medical conditions resulting in diminished health-related quality of life. WeThrive, a new mobile health (mHealth) app, implements the pictorial bleeding assessment chart to identify HMB, and the adolescent Menstrual Bleeding Questionnaire to measure the effects of HMB on adolescents' health-related quality of life. If HMB is identified, WeThrive will connect users to local clinics for further assessment of their menstrual bleeding with a health care provider. OBJECTIVE: Thi

New and emerging therapies for women, girls, and people with the potential to menstruate with VWD.

Innovation in therapies for patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD) has lagged far behind that for hemophilia, creating inequity in the bleeding disorder community. Although currently existing treatments of antifibrinolytics, desmopressin, and plasma-derived von Willebrand factor replacement are considered effective, multiple studies report poor quality of life in patients with VWD, especially those with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). This disconnect underscores the need for novel therapies that are safe and effective and that consider a patient's specific contraceptive and reproductive ne

Impacts of Menstruation, Community Type, and an Oral Yeast Probiotic on the Vaginal Microbiome.

A healthy state of the vaginal microbiome can prevent vaginal disease and promote successful fertilization and healthy pregnancies. Little is known about the stability of the vaginal microbiome and the influence of factors such as diet and probiotics. While less explored, yeast probiotics have an interesting potential because of their immunomodulatory and pathogen inhibition capacities. In this study, we investigated the impact of the oral yeast probiotic Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 on the vaginal microbiomes of 52 healthy women using 16S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) amplicon

The Spiny Mouse-A Menstruating Rodent to Build a Bridge From Bench to Bedside.

Menstruation, the cyclical breakdown of the uterine lining, is arguably one of evolution's most mysterious reproductive strategies. The complexity and rarity of menstruation within the animal kingdom is undoubtedly a leading contributor to our current lack of understanding about menstrual function and disorders. In particular, the molecular and environmental mechanisms that drive menstrual and fertility dysregulation remain ambiguous, owing to the restricted opportunities to study menstruation and model menstrual disorders in species outside the primates. The recent discovery of naturally occu

Between and within-woman differences in the association between menstruation and migraine days.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate between and within-woman differences in the association between menstruation and migraine days. BACKGROUND: Prior diary studies have shown that at the population level, aggregating across individuals, the odds of migraine increase during the perimenstrual window (from day -2 to day +3, where +1 is the first day of bleeding). These studies have been neither long nor large enough to assess the association between migraine and menses from an individual perspective. Consequently, existing research on menstrual-related migraine has largely overlooked between and within-wo

Folate, homocysteine and the ovarian cycle among healthy regularly menstruating women.

STUDY QUESTION: How are concentrations of plasma homocysteine and serum folate associated with reproductive hormones and anovulation in regularly menstruating women? SUMMARY ANSWER: Higher homocysteine was associated with sporadic anovulation and hormonal changes that may be indicative of impaired ovulatory function, but higher serum folate was associated only with higher luteal phase progesterone. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Higher folate levels as well as some variants in genes relevant to one-carbon metabolism, are associated with improved reproductive outcomes and responses to fertility treat

The patterns of uterine contractility in normal menstruating women: from physiology to pathology.

The nonpregnant uterus shows uterine activity throughout the menstrual cycle. This uterine activity was detected both by single strep tissue and by using intrauterine pressure recordings in vitro and in vivo. Today, ultrasound has made it possible to study this activity with a noninvasive approach and to assess uterine contractions (UCs) in real-time movements of the uterus. Throughout the menstrual cycle, wavelike activity patterns of the reproductive organ were established. These patterns are under control of steroid hormones. Adequate UCs may provide for gamete/embryo transportation through

Directionality of menstrual flow: cervical os diameter as a determinant of retrograde menstruation.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a mathematical model to examine the factors that control the directionality of menstrual flow. DESIGN: The model consisted of a rigid cavity, filled with a viscous liquid, with three outflow ports: a set of paired outflow ports (fallopian tube ostia) and an additional single outflow port (cervical os). The Darcy-Weisbach equation was used to calculate flow rates through the ports. RESULTS: At cervical os diameters of less than 0.5 mm, more than 50% of flow was through the fallopian tubes over a wide range of values for cervical length and fallopian tube ostia diameter a

Recovery of Staphylococcus aureus from multiple body sites in menstruating women.

Because we suspected the number of women harboring Staphylococcus aureus perivaginally to be higher than previously reported, we undertook an examination of normal, healthy volunteers. Of 97 young women, 26% yielded S. aureus from the external labia at the time of menstruation. Toxin associated with toxic shock syndrome was recovered from 5 of 25 subjects with positive genital cultures. Approximately one-half of the women with positive genital cultures yielded positive cultures from the posterior cervical fornix. These 12 women with positive vaginal cultures formed a distinct subgroup that was

Repeatedly occurring retrograde menstruation intensifies central sensitization driven by neuroinflammation in endometriosis models.

This study investigated how chronic pelvic pain (CPP) develops using rhesus macaques with naturally occurring endometriosis and a multiple lesion induction mouse model (MIM), as repeated retrograde menstruation is considered an underlying mechanism of endometriosis pathogenesis. MIM increased lesion numbers and elevated hypersensitivity. Elevated persistent glial cell activation was observed across multiple brain regions or spinal cords in MIM and rhesus macaques. Elevated TRPV1, SP, and CGRP expressions in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were persistent in MIM. MIM induced the severe disappeara

Murine modeling of menstruation identifies immune correlates of protection during Chlamydia muridarum challenge.

The menstrual cycle influences the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including those caused by the pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis). However, the underlying immune contributions are poorly defined. A mouse model simulating the repetitive immune-mediated process of menstruation could provide valuable insights into tissue-specific determinants of protection against chlamydial infection within the cervicovaginal and uterine mucosae of the female reproductive tract (FRT). Here, we used the pseudopregnancy approach for inducing menstruation in naïve C57Bl/6 mi

Investigating Menstruation and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes: Oxymoron or New Frontier? A Narrative Review.

Not discounting the important foetal or placental contribution, the endometrium is a key determinant of pregnancy outcomes. Given the inherently linked processes of menstruation, pregnancy and parturition with the endometrium, further understanding of menstruation will help to elucidate the maternal contribution to pregnancy. Endometrial health can be assessed via menstrual history and menstrual fluid, a cyclically shed, easily and non-invasively accessible biological sample that represents the distinct, heterogeneous composition of the endometrial environment. Menstrual fluid has been applied

Circulating cell-free endometrial DNA level is unaltered during menstruation and in endometriosis.

STUDY QUESTION: Is circulating cell-free DNA (cirDNA) from the endometrium elevated during menstruation and in endometriosis? SUMMARY ANSWER: Endometrial cirDNA does not increase during menstruation and is not elevated in endometriosis. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Changes in cirDNA associated with common benign conditions are a potential source of false positives in cancer diagnostic applications, but also present an opportunity for biomarker development for diseases such as endometriosis. Elevated cirDNA has been reported in endometriosis patients compared to healthy community controls, but no d

Greater Muscle Stiffness during Contraction at Menstruation as Measured by Shear-Wave Elastography.

It is important to measure mechanical properties of muscle, since muscle stiffness is an important component of stabilizing or controlling joint stability. The levels of sex hormones especially estrogen vary over the phase of the menstrual cycle and impact the mechanical properties of soft tissue such as muscle, tendon, and ligaments due to the presence of 17-β estradiol receptor in human connective tissues. Recently, shear-wave elastography (SWE), based on ultrasound imaging, has been used as an accurate technique for visualizing and assessing tissue stiffness. The purpose of this study was t
