Avoidance of interspecific mating in female Syrian hamsters is stronger toward familiar than toward unfamiliar heterospecific males.

Adult Syrian hamster females (Mesocricetus auratus) learn to discriminate against familiar heterospecific males (Turkish hamster, M. brandti). We investigated whether females learn to avoid any heterospecific male after exposure to just one heterospecific male. We predicted that, after being exposed to one heterospecific male, a female would avoid mating not only with that familiar male but also with any unfamiliar heterospecific male. We exposed females to a heterospecific male across a wire-mesh barrier for 8 days and then paired the female with (a) that same heterospecific male or (b) an un

Topical microemulsion with phenolic compounds from Libidibia ferrea (Fabaceae): An alternative treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: The pharmacotherapy of cutaneous leishmaniasis is invasive and presents several adverse reactions, which reinforces the need for topical and less toxic alternatives. METHODS: Topical microemulsions containing phenolic compounds from Libidibia ferrea (Fabaceae) were developed, physicochemically characterized, and tested in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) experimentally infected with Leishmania amazonensis. After treatment, clinical progression of lesions, histopathological alterations, and parasite load were evaluated. The dichloromethane (DCM) fraction of the extract was analyzed

Development of a Hamster Model for Chikungunya Virus Infection and Pathogenesis.

Chikungunya virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and causes severe, debilitating infectious arthritis in humans. The need for an animal model to study the disease process and evaluate potential treatments is imminent as the virus continues its spread into novel geographic locations. Golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are often used as outbred laboratory animal models for arboviral diseases. Here we demonstrate that hamsters inoculated with chikungunya virus developed viremia and histopathologic lesions in their limbs and joints similar to those seen in human patients. The virus disseminated

[Preliminary evaluation of maggot (Diptera: Calliphoridae) therapy as a potential treatment for leishmaniasis ulcers].

INTRODUCTION: Maggot debridement therapy has been widely used for treating a variety of scarred-over soft-tissue wounds. Published accounts record several illnesses in which treatment with larval therapy has promoted injury healing in conjunction with infection by bacterial pathogens resistant to conventional antibiotics. OBJECTIVE: An initial test of the maggot therapy was developed for cutaneous injuries produced by Leishmania amazonensis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An experimental design based on an animal model with three replicates in Mesocricetus aureatus (Rodentia: Muridae) was used to ev

[Recognition by immunoelectroblotting of antigens from Taenia solium and its larva].

Golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) were infected with cysticerci of Taenia solium. Groups of three were bled and killed weekly up to 15 weeks recording the number of implanted adults in the small intestine. A longitudinal study on the antibody response against adult and larvae Ags was carried out, as well as against Ags of H. nana. By ELISA, antibodies against larvae and adult Ags of T. solium were detected since the first week, showing a peak at 3 and 5 weeks respectively. At 14 weeks antibodies levels were very low, which is the time when the parasite is eliminated. The response against A

[Studies of the ecology of some blood protozoa of wild small mammals in North Germany (author's transl)].

In 1977 and 1978, 696 small mammals of 9 different species were surveyed for protozoal blood parasites. The following parasites were found: Hepatozoon sylvatici in Apodemus flavicollis, H. erhardovae and Trypanosoma evotomys in Clethrionomys glareolus, T. microti and Babesia microti in Microtus agrestis and T. croicidurae in Crocidura russula. H. erhardovae showed regularly high infection-rates (more than 70%) during all the years in 1977 and 1978. H. sylvatici was found only in 5.6% of the yellow-necked mice from March to October. T. microti and T. evotomys were predominately found in the tim

Morphological and molecular data for two Plagiorchis species (Trematoda: Plagiorchiidae) from the southern Far East of Russia.

Adult trematodes of two species of the genus Plagiorchis were found in the southern Far East of Russia: one species in the intestine of a naturally infected Japanese large-footed bat (Myotis macrodactylus) and the other in a golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) experimentally infected with metacercariae collected from a stonefly. On the basis of morphological and molecular studies, the trematode individuals found in the bat were identified as Plagiorchis koreanus, which confirms that this species is cosmopolitan. The trematodes reared in the hamster were similar in their morphological feature

Hamster, a close model for visceral leishmaniasis: Opportunities and challenges.

AIM: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by parasites belonging to genus Leishmania (L.) is classified as a category I disease by the TDR/WHO. The understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease was built from the findings of available experimental models. Among all available models, the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is the most suitable model for the experimental representation of VL. In this review, we have focused on the opportunities and challenges of using the hamster as an experimental model for visceral leishmaniasis. METHODS: The studies referenced in this review were based o

EhRab21 associates with the Golgi apparatus in Entamoeba histolytica.

Rab proteins constitute the largest group of small GTPases and act as molecular switches in a wide variety of cellular processes, including proliferation, cytoskeleton assembly, and membrane trafficking in all eukaryotic cells. Rab21 has been reported in several eukaryotic cells, and our results suggest that in Entamoeba histolytica, Rab21 is involved in the vesicular traffic associated with the Golgi apparatus, where its function appears to be important to maintain the structure of this organelle. In addition, proteins such as Rab1A and Sec24, identified in this work associated with EhRab21,

Liver transcriptomic and methylomic analyses identify transcriptional mitogen-activated protein kinase regulation in facultative hibernation of Syrian hamster.

Hibernation consists of alternating torpor-arousal phases, during which animals cope with repetitive hypothermia and ischaemia-reperfusion. Due to limited transcriptomic and methylomic information for facultative hibernators, we here conducted RNA and whole-genome bisulfide sequencing in liver of hibernating Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). Gene ontology analysis was performed on 844 differentially expressed genes and confirmed the shift in metabolic fuel utilization, inhibition of RNA transcription and cell cycle regulation as found in seasonal hibernators. Additionally, we showed a so

Laboratory maintenance of the bacterial endosymbiont, Neorickettsia sp., through the life cycle of a digenean, Plagiorchis elegans.

The Digenea (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) are a diverse and complex group of internal metazoan parasites. These parasites can serve as hosts to obligate intracellular bacteria belonging to the genus Neorickettsia (Family: Anaplasmataceae). Neorickettsiae persist within all stages of the fluke life cycle and thus are maintained through vertical transmission. However, the low prevalence of Neorickettsia in nature limits study of their transmission biology at different steps of digenean life cycles. To resolve this dilemma, we have developed for the first time a laboratory model allowing to mainta

Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) lainsoni n. sp. from Mesomys hispidus (Rodentia: Echimyidae) in Brazil: trypomastigotes described from experimentally infected laboratory mice.

We report the detection, isolation and description of Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) lainsoni n. sp. from a caviomorph rodent, Mesomys hispidus (Rodentia: Echimyidae), obtained in the Rio Negro region of the state of Amazonas, in northern Brazil. Laboratory-bred white mice (Mus musculus) and rats (Rattus rattus) were inoculated with large numbers of culture forms by intraperitoneal route, and trypomastigotes appeared in their blood 3-8 days post-inoculation. One single epimastigote was also found in Mus musculus. Similar attempts to infect Rattus norvegicus, hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), the op

Host cytokine production, lymphoproliferation, and antibody responses during the course of Ancylostoma ceylanicum infection in the Golden Syrian hamster.

The Syrian Golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) has been used to model infections with the hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum. New molecular immunological reagents to measure cellular immune responses in hamsters were developed and used to determine the impact of A. ceylanicum hookworm infection on host cytokine responses and lymphoproliferation. Initial larval infection with 100 third-stage A. ceylanicum larvae resulted in predominant Th1 responses (upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines) that lasted for the duration of larval migration and continued up to 14 days postinfection (prepatency).

The hamster model of intraperitoneal Burkholderia mallei (glanders).

Thirty-one female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were inoculated intraperitoneally with a lethal dose of Burkholderia mallei (Budapest strain). Hamsters were killed postinoculation on days 0 through 6. Lesions were first noted in the spleens on postinoculation day 1, and in mediastinal and mesenteric lymph nodes, mediastinum, liver, and bone marrow on day 2. Lesions were present in the lung and submandibular lymph nodes on day 3, and in the brain on day 5. The characteristic histopathologic change was necrotizing pyogranulomatous inflammation, often with hemorrhage. Lesions indicative

Pathology of acute fatal babesiosis in hamsters experimentally infected with the WA-1 strain of Babesia.

A strain of Babesia (strain WA-1), recently isolated from a human in Washington State, was found to be unusually virulent for hamsters; it caused acute infection and death in a large proportion of animals 5 to 7 days after inoculation. To assess the basic pathologic lesions associated with this infection, 30 male Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were inoculated intraperitoneally with the WA-1 strain. Twelve animals (40%) died within 5 to 6 days. The other 18 animals, all infected and clinically ill, were killed on the sixth or seventh day for biochemical study. All 12 animals that died f

Paraventricular neurons control hamster photoperiodism by a predominantly uncrossed descending pathway.

Exposure of Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) to short daylengths triggers testicular regression through a pathway involving hypothalamic regulation of sympathetic control over melatonin production in the pineal gland. Destruction of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) blocks this response. In order to determine whether descending paraventricular influences are crossed or uncrossed, we removed the superior cervical ganglion unilaterally and destroyed the PVN on the same or opposite side. Ipsilateral PVN lesions were consistent with gonadal regression and high nocturnal pineal m

Jagged-1/Notch Pathway and Key Transient Markers Involved in Biliary Fibrosis during Opisthorchis felineus Infection.

Chronic opisthorchiasis associated with Opisthorchis felineus infection is accompanied by severe fibrotic complications. It is of high practical significance to elucidate the mechanisms of hepatic fibrosis in chronic infection dynamics. The goal of the study is to investigate the temporal profile of key markers and the Jagged1/Notch signaling pathway in the implementation of fibrosis in a chronic O. felineus infection. For the first time, using histological methods and real-time PCR analysis, we demonstrated the activation of the Jagged1/Notch pathway in liver fibrogenesis, including the activ

On the development of the shoulder girdle in Crocidura russula (Soricidae) and other placental mammals: evolutionary and functional aspects.

The development of the shoulder girdle was studied in embryonic stages and a neonate of Crocidura russula using histological sections and 3-D reconstructions. Neonatal stages of Suncus etruscus and Mesocricetus auratus, both altricial placentals, were also studied. The earliest stage of C russula, in which the scapula is still partially blastematous, has already a supraspinous fossa. The dorsal portion of the scapular spine does not develop from the anterior margin of the scapula. Its mode of development varies among the placentals studied to date. In some it is completely appositional bone, i

Establishment and survival of the strobilar stage of Taenia crassiceps in hamsters, gerbils, and mice, with reference to different helminth isolates.

Following the oral administration of metacestodes of two isolates of Taenia crassiceps, the enteral establishment and survival of the strobilar stage were examined in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) and laboratory mice. The origin of the isolates was Microtus montebelli caught in Japan in 1985 or Clethrionomys rutilus captured on St. Lawrence Island, Bering Sea, in 1988 (abbreviated as JPN and SLI isolates), respectively. The enteral establishment of the SLI isolate was distinctly higher than that of the JPN isolate in golden hamsters and mice,
