Microplastic (MP) pollution poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Coral reefs, often located near land-based sources of these pollutants, act as potential sinks due to their complex three-dimensional structures. While the interactions between reef-building corals and MPs have been increasingly investigated, the role of coral structural complexity in MP accumulation remains poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of coral structural complexity on MP trapping efficiency under natural conditions, specifically aiming to: I) quantify and characterize MPs trapped by Pocil

Recent advances in dementia research have expanded our understanding of modifiable risk factors, with air pollution being a well-established contributor. However, microplastics-plastic particles smaller than 5 mm-represent an understudied component of environmental pollution that may significantly impact neurological health. This review examines emerging evidence linking chronic microplastic exposure to increased dementia risk. Microplastics enter the human body through multiple routes, including ingestion of contaminated food and water, inhalation, and dermal absorption, with demonstrated abi

Irrigation is one of the main methods used to increase crop yield in saline soils. However, microplastics (MPs) occur in saline soil due complex irrigation water sources and agricultural operations, and these may affect the soil microbial population structure. We selected soil from the Inner Mongolia section of the Hetao Irrigation District as the research object to determine the microplastic (MP) pollution status and microbial population structure and to explore the relationship between them. The results showed that (1) MPs were mainly polyethylene terephthalate (white and blue), with particl

Microplastics, as emerging contaminants, can absorb antibiotics, and their coexistence in soil ecosystems poses serious threats to soil health. While previous studies have primarily focused on the individual effects of microplastics or antibiotics, the interactions between these pollutants in soil environments remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the combined effects of sulfonamide antibiotics and microplastics-both non-degradable low-density polyethylene and degradable polylactic acid-on soil microbiota and physicochemical properties. Our findings revealed significant chan

Microplastics (MPs) have been detected in all environmental spheres, from the Arctic to the deepest ocean trenches, and have also infiltrated the internal organs of the human body through ingestion, inhalation, and other exposure routes. While various commercial products have been identified as origin of MPs, leading to bans and awareness campaigns, their presence in medical treatments remains underexplored. This study investigates MPs in intravenous (IV) admixtures, which are stored in plastic containers before administration. The hypothesis suggests that prolonged storage may degrade contain

Anadara granosa or blood cockles have been reported to be a candidate for biomonitoring agents due to their sedimentary nature and their nutrient uptake mechanisms. Yet, this bivalve is still regarded as a delicacy in Asian cuisine. Malaysia is the largest exporter of this sea product that contaminated cockles may also be experienced by the importing countries. However, the bioaccumulation of microplastics in A. granosa cultivated in Malaysia has not been extensively studied. It is crucial to comprehend the risk posed to humans by consuming A. granosa in their diet. Therefore, the purpose of t

Microplastics (MPs) are increasingly recognized as contaminants present in various environments and are widely acknowledged as potential hazards to the mammalian immune system. In our study of chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy, we observed the presence of MP in CAR-T cell products for the first time. It is worth exploring whether MP could enter CAR-T cells and how they might affect CAR-T cells' functionality. Therefore, we analyzed how MP affected CD19 and BCMA-CAR-T cells. Based on flow cytometry, ELISA, and cytotoxicity analysis of in vitro and in vivo experiments, MP suppress

Microplastics, with intricate physical and chemical characteristics, infiltrate the food chain and extensively impact ecosystems. Despite acknowledging the link between environmental pollution and declining fertility, the specific mechanisms affecting reproductive health remain to be elucidated. This review emphasizes the global correlation between microplastics and subfertility, focusing on entry pathways and impacts on ecosystems. Research suggests that microplastics disrupt the neuroendocrine system, influencing sex hormone synthesis through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. In

Microplastics (MPs) have become a significant source of concern as they have emerged as a widespread pollutant that harms the aquatic environment. It has become an enormous challenge, having the capacity to biomagnify and eventually affect human health, biodiversity, aquatic animals, and the environment. This review provides in-depth knowledge of how MPs interact with different toxic organic chemicals, antibiotics, and heavy metals in the aquatic environment and its consequences. Membrane technologies like ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), microfiltration (MF), and dynamic membranes c

Iron (hydr)oxides as a kind of natural mineral actively participate in the transformation of organic pollutants, but there is a large knowledge gap in their impacts on photochemical processes of microplastics (MPs). This study is the first to examine the degradation of two ordinary plastic materials, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), mediated by iron (hydr)oxides (goethite and hematite) under simulated solar light irradiation. Both iron (hydr)oxides significantly promoted the degradation of MPs (particularly PP) with a greater effect by goethite than hematite, related to hydroxyl radic

Sea salt can be considered as a vector of microplastics in the human body. In this work, the sea salts collected from three Italian salterns has been solubilized in MilliQ water and filtered to extract microplastics. The visual quantification of microplastics with a stereomicroscope was carried out on the bases of their size, followed by a classification taking into account their physical characteristics. ATR-FTIR and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify the polymeric type of microplastics. Their significant presence has been revealed: 1653 ± 29 microplastics/kg of sea salt. In total, 80.6

Because paint particles consist of a resin (polymer) combined with one or more additives, they bear compositional similarities with microplastics. Despite these shared characteristics, however, paint particles are often undetected, deliberately overlooked or evade classification in the pool of micro-debris (all synthetic debris of < 5 mm in size), and in particular in the marine setting where an extensive body of microplastic literature exists. Accordingly, the present paper provides a critical insight into the physico-chemical properties, sources, distributions, behaviour and toxicity of pain

Currently, the evidence of the ingestion of microplastics (MPs) by organisms or the accumulation in different environmental compartments has been achieved using several methodological procedures. However, its uses have not been standardized across studies. In this study, we aim to assess and validate a protocol that can be useful for optimizing the identification and quantification procedures of polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs) in biological samples. Initially, considering that numerous studies filter samples previously digested in cellulosic membranes for isolation and analysis of MPs, we

Information on the transport and distribution of microplastics in coastal lagoons is scarce. This study provides the first evaluation of microplastic distribution in a hypersaline coastal lagoon and explores natural and anthropogenic factors that drive their location and transport. The study combines different field strategies: spatial distribution of microplastics in sediments, for September 2017 (wet season and peak use of the lagoon) and February 2018 (winter season, characterized by intense Northerly winds and least use of the lagoon); spatial distribution of microplastics in the water col

Microplastics pose threats to aquatic environments because they serve as hard-substrate for microbial community colonization and biofilm formation due to their long-life span and hydrophobic surface which can impact on aquatic ecosystems. However, the association between microplastics and other pollutants, particularly nutrients and metals in river sediments are largely unknown. In this study, microplastics abundance and hazard scores which are the risks arising from chemical compounds used for plastics manufacture, and the correlations between microplastics and the concentrations of total car

The global surge in plastic production and inadequate waste management have resulted in widespread environmental contamination with microplastics (MPs). Derived either as primary particles from consumer products or as secondary fragments from the degradation of larger plastics, MPs are now omnipresent in terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric ecosystems. Their small size, durability, and surface reactivity enable biofilm formation, heavy metal adsorption, and easy entry into food chains, ultimately posing significant risks to human health. This review outlines the sources, types, human exposure
