Haematological study in Cabo Delgado province, Mozambique; sickle cell trait and G6PD deficiency.

A haematological study was done in several villages in the northern province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique. The prevalence of sickle cell trait (HbAS) was found to be about 4%. The prevalence of G6PD deficiency in males was about 18%. No significant differences were found in haemoglobin values between HbAA and HbAS individuals and between G6PD deficient and G6PD normal individuals. The number of males with both HbAS and G6PD deficiency was not significantly greater than expected.

Mantakassa: an epidemic of spastic paraparesis associated with chronic cyanide intoxication in a cassava staple area of Mozambique. 2. Nutritional factors and hydrocyanic acid content of cassava products. Ministry of Health, Mozambique.

An outbreak of spastic paraparesis which mostly affected women and children occurred in a northern province of Mozambique in 1981. The epidemic was related to chronic cyanide intoxication associated with a diet consisting almost exclusively of cassava. A prolonged drought in the area had exhausted all food resources except cassava, especially the bitter varieties. A nutritional, toxicological and botanical investigation was carried out in two of the five districts affected. The main findings were that cyanide levels were unusually high in the cassava plant as a consequence of the drought with

The influenza virus sentinel surveillance: results of system evaluation in Mozambique, 2016-2021.

The 2009 influenza pandemic has caused health challenges around the world. Mozambique has faced challenges in implementing surveillance systems, which are obstacles to the timely detection of outbreaks and epidemics. It is intended to evaluate the performance of the influenza sentinel surveillance system between 2016 and 2021. A descriptive-cross-sectional evaluation of the influenza sentinel surveillance system was conducted at the sentinel posts in Maputo. The sample was calculated, and a simple random sampling technique was used to select the 372 patient record forms. Microsoft Excel and Ta

Cost-effectiveness of respiratory syncytial virus prevention strategies in Mozambique: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of severe acute lower respiratory infections in children. The World Health Organization recently recommended two passive RSV immunisation strategies for global use, but prices are yet to be determined in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: We used a static cohort model to generate preliminary estimates of the potential health impact and cost-effectiveness of a maternal vaccine (RSVPreF, Abrysvo®, Pfizer) and a long-acting infant mAb (Nirsevimab, Beyfortus®, AstraZeneca, and Sanofi) over a 10-year period (2025-2034

Intimate partner violence and mental health outcomes among ever-married women in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is linked to adverse mental health outcomes. Despite its widespread prevalence and devastating consequences, the mental health impacts of IPV remain understudied in Mozambique. We examined the association between IPV and mental health outcomes among ever-married women in Mozambique. METHODS: This study adopted a cross-sectional design based on the most recent Mozambique Demographic and Health Survey (MDHS) conducted in 2022-23. The sample comprised of 3,957 ever-married women aged between 15 and 49 years. The outcome variable for our study is mental

Genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 during the first four waves in Mozambique.

Mozambique reported the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in March 2020 and it has since spread to all provinces in the country. To investigate the introductions and spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Mozambique, 1 142 whole genome sequences sampled within Mozambique were phylogenetically analyzed against a globally representative set, reflecting the first 25 months of the epidemic. The epidemic in the country was marked by four waves of infection, the first associated with B.1 ancestral lineages, while the Beta, Delta, and Omicron Variants of Concern (VOCs) were responsible for most infe

Plasmodium falciparum community prevalence and health-seeking behaviours in rural Sussundenga District, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Impacts of nationally directed malaria control interventions hinge on understanding malaria transmission and prevention at the community level. The decision to seek care or health-seeking behaviours provide valuable insight on knowledge of malaria, access to care, and efficacy of malaria case management. Thus far, few studies have focused on central Mozambique. The aim was to describe community level Plasmodium falciparum prevalence and health-seeking behaviours among residents of Sussundenga, Mozambique, a rural village in Manica Province with high malaria incidence reported at th

Field performance of ultrasensitive and conventional malaria rapid diagnostic tests in southern Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: An ultrasensitive malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT) was recently developed for the improved detection of low-density Plasmodium falciparum infections. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of the PfHRP2-based Abbott Malaria Ag P. falciparum ultrasensitive RDT (uRDT) to that of the conventional SD-Bioline Malaria Ag P. falciparum RDT (cRDT) when performed under field conditions. METHODS: Finger-prick blood samples were collected from adults and children in two cross-sectional surveys in May of 2017 in southern Mozambique. Using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR

Profile of people seeking health services during Pope Francis' visit to Mozambique, 2019.

Pope Francis visited Mozambique from September 4-6, 2019. During the visit, a real-time surveillance system for mass gathering events was implemented in all places where people gathered in Maputo City for early detection of possible outbreaks and other health-related events. The system was implemented at four sites were mass gathering events occurred over the three-day visit. Data were collected by administering a simple questionnaire on a tablet, which collected information about sociodemographics, syndromic diagnoses, and outcomes of the patients that sought medical care. Additionally, a des

HIV drug resistance patterns in pregnant women using next generation sequence in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Few data on HIV resistance in pregnancy are available from Mozambique, one of the countries with the highest HIV toll worldwide. Understanding the patterns of HIV drug resistance in pregnant women might help in tailoring optimal regimens for prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (pMTCT) and antenatal care. OBJECTIVES: To describe the frequency and characteristics of HIV drug resistance mutations (HIVDRM) in pregnant women with virological failure at delivery, despite pMTCT or antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHODS: Samples from HIV-infected pregnant women from a rural

First description of HTLV-1/2 seroprevalence in HIV-infected inmates in Mozambique.

No study has yet been conducted to estimate the burden of co-infection of HIV and HTLV-1/2 in inmates in sub-Saharan Africa. To investigate prevalence of co-infection in inmates in Mozambique, a total of 2140 inmates were screened for HIV, of which 515 were HIV seropositive. All HIV seropositive inmates were further screened for HTLV infection, and eight (1.55%) were co-infected. Co-infection was higher in females (3.45% [2/58; CI: 0.42-11.91]) as compared to males (1.35% [6/445; CI: 0.55-3.06]). Early screening of HTLV in prisons is urgently needed in Mozambique in order to improve the care p

Preliminary report of HIV and Toxoplasma gondii occurrence in pregnant women from Mozambique.

Toxoplasmosis, a protozoan disease, causes severe disease in fetuses during pregnancy and deadly encephalitis in HIV patients. There are several studies on its seroprevalence around the world, but studies focusing on African countries are limited in number and mostly anecdotal. We studied two groups of samples from Mozambique by ELISA, using serum samples from 150 pregnant women and six Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from AIDS patients with encephalitis. HIV status was confirmed, and CD4 blood counts were obtained from HIV-positive pregnant women. IgG seroprevalence of the group as a whole

Ca(2+)-Calmodulin regulation of testicular androgen production in Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus).

The Ca(2+)-Calmodulin (CaM) signaling pathway has previously been shown to be involved in the regulation of teleost fish ovarian steroidogenesis. However, a putative role of CaM in testicular steroidogenesis and potential targets has not been examined. To examine whether basal steroidogenesis is modulated by Ca(2+) and CaM levels in the testis of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) we have incubated testicular fragments in vitro under different conditions and analyzed steroid output. Calcium-free medium with or without EGTA did not affect testicular basal 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) a

Acute bacterial meningitis among children, in Manhiça, a rural area in Southern Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: Acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) is one of the most severe diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa. Although data for the continent is very limited, more than one million cases are estimated per year, with mortality and life-long sequelae occurring in 50% of these cases. METHODS: As part of the clinical management of children admitted to the Manhiça District Hospital, information on cases of ABM was recorded. We analysed data from June 1998 to November 2003. RESULTS: During the study period, 475 cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) samples were collected from 20,173 children <15 years of age admit

Neonatal and post-neonatal onset of early congenital syphilis: a report from Mozambique.

Congenital syphilis (CS) has been and continues to be a principal public health problem in developing countries. Despite the wide experience acquired, physicians still have problems in diagnostic evaluation. We report 145 cases of CS at the Central Hospital, Maputo, emphasizing the differences in clinical features and in the results of serological and X-ray examinations between the neonatal and post-neonatal age groups. In the post-neonatal age group, the clinical expression of CS is mostly overt. It is commonly recognized that manifestations of CS in the neonatal age group are often poor or n

Schistosoma infection as a cause of myeloradiculopathy: case report from Mozambique and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomal myelopathy (SM) is a rare and devastating neurological manifestation of schistosomiasis, predominantly affecting individuals in endemic regions. SM may present a wide range of positive and negative manifestations such as paresthesia, myalgia, low back pain, paraplegia and urinary dysfunction. Limited awareness and lack of access to supportive microbiological and imaging diagnostics means may delay clinical recognition. METHODS: Case report of SM and a systematic review of the literature on its epidemiological patterns and clinico-radiological characteristics, includin
