[Astroblastoma with Rapid Cyst Expansion and Hemorrhage in an Adult: A Case Report].

Astroblastoma is an extremely rare primary brain tumor accounting for 0.45 to 2.8% of all neuroglial tumors and usually occurs in pediatrics and young adults. The natural history of astroblastoma still remains unknown. In the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors of the central nervous system, astroblastoma is classified as other neuroepithelial tumors and standard treatment other than surgery has not been established. As molecular and genetic diagnosis becomes more important in the latest WHO classification of brain tumors, the development of therapeutic options based on th

A history of partial complex seizures in a 30-year-old woman.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour is an uncommon lesion of the brain characterised by a heterogeneous population of neurons, astrocytes and oligodendroglia-like cells. Most patients are young adults with a long history of drug-resistant seizures. We report a case of a 31 year-old woman with a history of severe epileptic attacks. Cerebral imaging showed a left temporal tumour measuring 4 cm in its greater dimension. After surgical intervention, histopathological examination showed a tumoural proliferation with both glial and neuronal components that was confirmed by immunohistochemistry.

Endoscopic resection of an intraventricular dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor of the septum pellucidum.

BACKGROUND: Breast surgery, Axillary Lymph Node Dissection (ALND), radiation and chemotherapy may develop several complications such as axillary web syndrome, frozen shoulder, numbness, shoulder pain and range of motion restriction, lymphostasis, and lymphedema. Up to 77% report sensory disturbance in the breast or arm after breast surgery. These short- and long-term consequences have dramatic impact on physical function and quality of life in this population. AIMS: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of neural tissue mobilization on sensory-motor impairments in breast cancer sur

Congenital brain tumors.

The most common brain tumor that was present or produced symptoms at birth was teratoma. In this series of congenital tumors, teratomas occurred over 5 times more frequently than the second most common type, astrocytoma. They were often immature because of primitive neural elements and, rarely, a component of mixed malignant germ cell tumors. Incidence between sexes was nearly identical among histologic types that were reported at least 10 times, except for choroid plexus papilloma, which exhibited a male predominance. Four of five meningiomas occurred in males and 4 of 5 sarcomas in females.

Ependymoblastoma with cystic change in a child.

Ependymoblastoma is a rare and devastating primitive neuroectodermal tumor with ependymal differentiation. This tumor occurs very early in life and shows rapid growth and a diffuse infiltration through the leptomeningeal space. This neoplasm is characterized by uniform neuroepithelial cells, multilayered ependymal rosettes, perivascular pseudorosettes, and numerous mitotic figures. In this article, the authors report on a 4-year-old girl who was diagnosed as having an ependymoblastoma with cystic change. After a series of laboratory and imaging examinations, the left frontal solid-cystic lesio

Transcallosal and endoscopic hybrid approach to a rare entity of pediatric intraventricular tumors-cribriform neuroepithelial tumor: a case report and literature review.

PURPOSE: Cribriform neuroepithelial tumor (CRINET) is a provisional category of intraventricular tumors, sharing similarities with AT/RTs, and there is a lack of data about its pathology, prognosis, and surgical approaches in the literature. We have been challenged to describe the surgical approach to a rare case of CRINET and describe the intraoperative features since none has been described before. Surgical resection and chemotherapy hold a great importance of favorable prognosis. METHODS: Twenty-month-old male with intraventricular tumor underwent transcallosal intraventricular tumor resec

Thoracic low grade glial neoplasm with concurrent H3 K27M and PTPN11 mutations.

We present the case of a 41-year-old man who developed worsening mid-thoracic back pain and imaging revealed a well-circumscribed intramedullary tumor in the thoracic spinal cord. Subtotal resection was performed, and histopathological analysis showed a cytologically bland, minimally proliferative glial neoplasm. Sequencing revealed H3 K27M and an activating PTPN11 mutation. Serial imaging revealed slow tumor regrowth over a three year period which prompted a second resection. The recurrent tumor displayed a similar low grade-appearing histology and harbored the same H3 K27M and PTPN11 mutatio

Histopathology of the inner ear in patients with xeroderma pigmentosum and neurologic degeneration.

INTRODUCTION: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations resulting in defective repair of DNA damage. XP patients have a markedly increased risk of ultraviolet-induced neoplasms and premature aging of sun-exposed tissue. Approximately 25% of XP patients in the United States have neurologic abnormalities including progressive sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). OBJECTIVE: To describe the temporal bone histopathology in 2 individuals with XP (XPA and XPD) with neurologic degeneration and to discuss the possible causes of deafness in these patients. METH

Transventricular Biopsy of Brain Tumor without Hydrocephalus Using Neuroendoscopy with Navigation.

OBJECTIVE: It is usually difficult to perform the neuroendoscopic procedure in patients without hydrocephalus due to difficulties with ventricular cannulation. The purpose of this study was to find out the value of navigation guided neuroendoscopic biopsy in patients with peri- or intraventricular tumors without hydrocephalus. METHODS: Six patients with brain tumors without hydrocephalus underwent navigation-guided neuroendoscopic biopsy. The procedure was indicated for verification of the histological diagnosis of the neoplasm, which was planned to be treated by chemotherapy and/or radiother

A Case Reported With 46, XX Testicular Disorders Of Sexual Development And Its Possible Association With Dysembryoplastic Neuroepithelial Tumour.

The main factor determining differentiation of bipotential gonads into testes or ovaries is the presence or absence of SRY (sex-determining region on Y chromosome) gene. De la Chapelle syndrome is a chromosomal anomaly with chromosomal makeup of a female (46, XX) and phenotypic presentation of a male. Previously known as XX sex reversal, it is now called 46, XX testicular disorders of sexual development (DSD). Although rare, it presents as a major chromosomal anomaly, with SRY gene crossover proposed as an underlying aetiology in most patients. We report the case of a 25-year-old male who pres

Synchronous rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor and diffuse astrocytoma with molecular characterization: a case report.

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor (WHO grade I) is a rare neoplasm primarily arising in young adults that is characterized by distinctive neurocytic rosette formation, a spindled glial component resembling pilocytic astrocytoma, and a high incidence of PIK3CA mutation. Low-grade diffuse astrocytoma (WHO grade II), on the other hand, is far more common and is characterized by a high incidence of IDH mutation. Here we report a patient with simultaneous presentation of a midbrain-cerebellar rosetteforming glioneuronal tumor and a cerebral diffuse astrocytoma. Molecular characterization of both t

Multifocal dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor with signs of atypia after regrowth.

We report the case of a multifocal dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) in a 7-year-old girl with local tumor regrowth 6 years later. The tumor was localized in the right parietal lobe extending from the cortex into the periventricular white matter. After subtotal resection of a histopathologically confirmed DNT we observed unexpected tumor progression in long-term follow-up. Therefore, a second surgery was performed when the patient was 14 years of age. In neuropathological examination of the second specimen the tumor showed an increased cellularity and pleomorphism, microvascular pro

Subcutaneous tumor seeding after biopsy in gliomatosis cerebri.

We observed a patient with subcutaneous seeding from gliomatosis cerebri with a low-grade histopathology. A 33-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 presented with progressive headache, diplopia, dysphagia, and a rightward instability. On neurological examination dysarthria, gait ataxia, and left-sided central facial and hypoglossal palsies were determined. MRI of the brain demonstrated diffuse, infiltrative non-enhancing lesions in the pons, both cerebellar hemispheres, the parahippocampal gyrus, and the thalamus. A stereotactic biopsy demonstrated an astrocytoma WHO grade 2. These cha

RBM10 truncation in astroblastoma in a patient with history of mandibular ameloblastoma: A case report.

Astroblastoma is a rare glial neoplasm composed of cells that have broad processes oriented perpendicular to central vessels and often demonstrate vascular sclerosis. The WHO 2016 classification does not specify a grading system for astroblastoma, and categorizes them as well-differentiated or malignant. These broad classification rubrics, however, do not accurately predict clinical outcome. Genetic profiling of astroblastoma has therefore been of particular interest in the recent years. These efforts, although in small number, have revealed heterogeneous molecular findings that may explain as

PIK3CA mutation in a mixed dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor and rosette forming glioneuronal tumor, a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Rosette forming glioneuronal tumors are rare, World Health Organization (WHO) grade I novel tumors frequently affecting the fourth ventricle or posterior fossa with typical neuronal pseudorosettes. RGNTs have been described as possessing additional histologic features of DNETs or pilocytic astrocytomas. Activating PIK3CA mutations have been identified as recurring genetic event in RGNTs. METHODS: We report a 35year old man who presented with binocular diplopia, headache, and was found to have a third ventricle tumor. Tumor pathology and oncogene evaluation were conducted. RESULTS

Gliomatosis cerebri type 1 with extensive involvement of the spinal cord and BRAF V600E mutation.

Gliomatosis cerebri (GC) is a rare neoplasm in which there is a diffuse cerebral infiltration by malignant glial cells with relative conservation of the underlying structures. A 67-year-old lady was admitted complaining of balance problems, troubled breathing, stuttered speech, decreased mobility, progressive ataxia and also some mild cognitive problems. MRI demonstrated ill defined T2 hyperintensity with mild mass effect mainly involving the brain stem and cerebellar hemispheres, with minor signal abnormalities extending supratentorially along the corticospinal tracts. The imaging appearances

Intraventricular dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor in a pediatric patient: is it the most common extracortical location for DNT?

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is commonly located in the supratentorial cortex. Extracortical localization of DNT is extremely rare. A 15-year-old female presented with loss of consciousness after head trauma. MRI demonstrated hydrocephalus secondary to a small non-enhancing T1 hypointense and T2 hyperintense mass lesion in the foramen of Monro; with radiologic impression of low-grade astrocytoma or colloid cyst. Tumor was gross totally resected. Histologic examination showed partly microcystic architecture with oligodendroglia-like neurocytic cells, glioneuronal element, and fl
