BACKGROUND: Food allergy is quite common in children, but it usually trends to improve with ageing. When an individual has specific IgE to a large variety of foods (multifood allergy) the clinical picture may be of remarkable severity and the avoidance of the offending foods may lead to severe dietary impairment. We describe a case of a child with ascertained multifood allergy.
METHODS: The prick-by-prick testing with fresh foods and serum IgE tests were used to evaluate the patient's sensitivity to food allergens. The clinical effect of sensitizations were evaluated by DBPCFC which was carri

Nut allergy is an important and potentially life threatening food allergy with a prevalence of one in 150 children in the UK population. STAT6 (signal transducer and activator of transcription) is an important molecule in the induction and regulation of an allergic response, which maps to chromosome 12q in a region previously linked with total serum IgE concentration and atopy in different populations. We have examined the frequency of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the 3'UTR region of STAT6 gene in 71 UK Caucasoid patients diagnosed with nut allergy and 45 atopic patients without n

Background: Adults frequently interpret food-associated adverse reactions as indicators of a food allergy. However, the public perception of food allergy may differ from a clinician's point of view. The prevalence of patient-reported food allergy tends to be higher than physician-confirmed cases. Dermatological manifestations (urticaria, pruritus, dermatitis, and edema) are frequently reported by patients. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe patient-reported symptoms related to suspected food allergies and particularly to characterize and highlight the volume of patients who visit

BACKGROUND: Skin prick testing (SPT) has been regarded as a safe procedure with few systemic reactions.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the rate of systemic reactions and their associations after SPT in the largest population to date.
METHODS: In this study reactions were recorded prospectively in a specialist UK allergy clinic for 6 years (2007-2013). An estimated 31,000 patients underwent SPT.
RESULTS: Twenty-four patients (age range 7 months to 56 years, mean 23.5 years, 17 female patients, 12 with asthma) had systemic reactions. The rate of systemic reactions to SPT was 0.077%. The likely allerg

BACKGROUND: Cashew nut allergy is becoming common, but the risk of severe reactions in comparison with peanut allergy is unknown.
METHOD: A case-matching study of children with a recent history of a reaction after definite nut ingestion, with positive skin prick test. Children whose worst ever reaction was to cashew nut (cashew group), were matched with two children each whose worst ever reaction was to peanut (peanut group) for sex, age of reaction and presentation, amount ingested, and asthma. Severity of the worst clinical reactions to date was compared.
RESULTS: A total of 47 children in

The diagnostic reliability in food allergy of skin prick tests (SPT) and the radio-allergosorbent test (RAST) was investigated in paediatric patients with respiratory and skin allergies. SPT and RAST were found to be reliable for the diagnosis of allergy to codfish, peas, nuts, peanuts and egg white. Positive SPT and RAST to cereals were common, but were most often without clinical significance or were correlated with respiratory allergy to the inhalation of flour dust. SPT and RAST were only partly reliable with regard to allergy to cow's milk, and were mostly reliable when used together and

The Allergo-vigilance Network including 200 French allergologists and 28 European ones, has three objectives: to index the cases of lethal or prelethal anaphylaxis, to evaluate the prevalence of food allergies, clinical pictures and allergens, and to implement the post-marketing surveillance of the allergic risk of novel foods. The first survey dealing with life-threatening food allergies leads to an estimation of 15,000 to 30,000 reactions per year in France. The AVN could be a helpful tool for public health organizations.

BACKGROUND: Because of the high cross-sensitization among tree nuts, the NUT CRACKER (Nut Co-reactivity-Acquiring Knowledge for Elimination Recommendations) study proposed a diagnostic algorithm to minimize the number of required oral food challenges (OFCs).
OBJECTIVE: To validate the algorithm for cashew and pistachio allergy and determine markers for allergic severity.
METHODS: Patients (n = 125) with a median age of 7.8 (interquartile range, 5.9-11.2) years with suspected tree nut allergy were evaluated prospectively with decision tree points on the basis of skin prick test (SPT), basophi

Food allergy is increasing worldwide, and sensitization through the skin is an important route of disease onset. However, the principal molecules driving epicutaneous sensitization to cashew nut remain unclear. Here, we established a BALB/c mouse model of epicutaneous sensitization and investigated major reactive antigens. Cashew nut-specific IgE was significantly higher in the cashew nut group at weeks 4 and 5, and cashew nut-specific IgG1 was significantly higher at weeks 3, 4, and 5. Immunoblotting showed antibody binding across multiple molecular weight regions. Immunoreactivity-guided fra

BACKGROUND: Component-resolved diagnosis has been shown to improve the diagnosis of food allergy.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate whether component-resolved diagnosis might help to identify patients at risk of objective allergic reactions to hazelnut.
METHOD: A total of 161 hazelnut-sensitized patients were included: 40 children and 15 adults with objective symptoms on double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges (DBPCFCs) and 24 adults with a convincing objective history were compared with 41 children and 41 adults with no or subjective symptoms on DBPCFCs (grouped together). BACKGROUND: The prevalence of food allergies increases, relating to diet modifications. The consumption of new foods--exotic foods or foods originally used for animal feed, new proteins, neo allergens due to the use of new technologies and soon, Genetically Modified Foods--are in the spotlight.
OBJECTIVE: It is essential to develop a system of food allergy vigilance encompassing the full range of foods being consumed. Understanding this imperative leads logically to the suggestion of developing an allergy vigilance network taking advantage of the ongoing experience of allergists "on the groun

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Due to the increasing popularity of exotic fruits in the Western diet, allergologists are confronted with allergic reactions to substances in these plants. The present report describes an anaphylactic reaction after the consumption of lychee fruit (Litchi sinensis). The atopic patient also suffers from rhinoconjunctivitis due to a sensitization against pollen of the Compositae family, as well as from dyspnoea after eating sunflower seeds. Our goals were to determine crossreactivity between antibodies against lychee fruit and other plants and to characterize the allerg

Food allergy (hypersensitivity) is a form of adverse food reaction in which the reaction is caused by an immunological response to a food. The majority of immediate allergic reactions to food are IgE-mediated. Although the true prevalence of food allergy is unknown, it is said to be higher in children than in adults. Data suggest that the prevalence in the general population is about 1%. In children the most common foods eliciting an allergic reaction are cow's milk, eggs, fish, peanuts and soy. In adults celery, fish, nuts, peanuts and shrimp are the major source of food allergy. Usually, foo

Food allergy has become a serious health concern especially in developed countries in the past two decades. In general population approximately 4-6% of children and 1-3% of adults experience food allergy. The article reviews IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity disorders. Epidemiology, Mechanism, Clinical manifestations, Genetically modified crops (GMOs), Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of IgE-mediated food allergies are discussed. The investigations show that over 90% of IgE-mediated food allergies in childhood are caused by: cow's milk, hen's egg, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish and s

Anaphylaxis is most commonly defined as an acute, severe, potentially life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction. Current expert consensus has defined anaphylaxis as a serious reaction that is rapid in onset and can be fatal, and is a severe, potentially life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction that is still rarely diagnosed. For safety reasons, patients should visit an allergologist to identify potential causes of this reaction. There are no data from other health care centres in Poland presenting characteristics of anaphylactic reactions. Clinical manifestations of anaphy
