OBJECTIVE: Deep learning (DL), a core branch of artificial intelligence (AI), has revolutionized medical image analysis. Driven by advances in computational power and access to large-scale datasets, DL excels at extracting hierarchical features from complex, unstructured data. Accurate interpretation of imaging features is essential for diagnosing and treating middle and inner ear diseases. This narrative review aims to summarize current literature on the application of DL in otological imaging.
METHODS: A narrative literature search was conducted using the PubMed and MEDLINE databases. Keywo

Otodectes cynotis is the agent of otodectic mange, a disease affecting wild and domestic felines, canines and mustelids. It is a highly contagious and pruritic condition and a major cause of otitis externa in dogs. This study was designed to verify the efficacy of NexGard® PLUS, a combination of afoxolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel pamoate, against natural O. cynotis infestations in dogs. It was a blinded, randomised, single-centre, negative controlled clinical efficacy study. Twenty-four naturally infested dogs were allocated to three groups of eight dogs: an untreated control group, a group t

Myringotomy is a well-accepted method for diagnosing and treating otitis media in dogs having an intact tympanic membrane. In a recent study, the contamination rate of middle ear aspirates from the external ear canal via myringotomy was 67%. To evaluate the iatrogenic contamination rate of the middle ear aspirates by material from the ear canal, using a novel technique: Vertical access to the tympanic membrane from beneath the patient. Thirty-six ears from 20 canine Fresh cadavers with a CT scan negative for otitis externa and otitis media were video-otoscopically flushed with the ear upside.

A 5-year-old child living in Erzurum, Turkey, complaining of otalgia, otorrhea and pruritus in the right ear for three days, was examined. Otoscopic examination at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology revealed live maggots in the external auditory canal. Ten maggots were recovered and were identified as third stage larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Local and systemic antibiotic therapies were applied. No pathological findings were present at the follow-up examination after 15 days of therapy.

During the placement of a mould for a hearing-aid by a hearing-aid dispenser, moulding material entered the middle ear through pre-existent perforations in the tympanic membrane in both ears. Besides hearing loss, there were no other symptoms. Surgical removal of the moulding material by tympanotomy was necessary, and was complicated by encirclement of the ossicles by the material. All the material could be removed and the hearing was saved. Recommendations for an improved procedure of mould-making are made including more detailed information of the otoscopic findings at the prescriptions for

We report the case of a 29 year-old woman who complained of pulsatile tinnitus and impaired hearing. On otoscopic examination, her right tympanic membrane was observed to be in contact with a mass in the middle ear cavity, with the formation of a meniscus at the point of contact. Using a high-sensitivity microphone inserted into the external auditory canal, we recorded pulsatile tinnitus that was synchronous with the electrocardiogram. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed that the middle ear mass was an aberrant internal carotid artery coursing through the hypotympanum.

The practicability of the bioactive glass ceramic Ceravital in ear surgery was tested in animals. The histological findings are presented. Over the last 3 years implants of bioactive glass ceramic were used in humans. Prostheses for the total or partial reconstruction of the ossicular chain and the reconstruction of the bony wall of the outer ear canal were fashioned. We have conducted about 300 tympanoplasties and 60 total or partial reconstructions of the bony wall of the outer ear canal. The otoscopic and functional results were satisfactory.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of, and patient characteristics associated with, the presence of a pediatric nasal foreign body when one is reported but none is visible on simple exam.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients presenting to a tertiary pediatric emergency department from October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2023 with a chief concern of nasal foreign body. We excluded patients for whom a foreign body was readily visible by direct visualization or with the aid of an otoscope. This left our population of interest: pediatric p

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to present our experience on facing the dehiscent high jugular bulb (HJB) during middle ear surgery in the past 2 decades.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
SETTING: Secondary referral hospital.
PATIENTS: From January 1982 to June 2002, consecutive 1,657 patients underwent surgical intervention for middle ear cleft diseases, a total of 1,857 operations. Of them, 10 ears (0.5%) in nine patients were proven to have dehiscent HJB during operation for adhesive otitis media in four ears and for chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma in six ears.

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate often develop middle ear ventilation disorders due to chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction. This may lead to hearing loss. The insertion of ventilation tubes is a widely accepted measure to avoid sequelae of middle ear ventilation disorders and hearing loss. On the other hand, long-term therapy with ventilation tubes may inflict iatrogenic complications. The objective of the study was the evaluation of otoscopic and audiometric long-term findings in adult cleft patients who had been treated with ventilation tubes since childhood when chronic otitis media w

Digital video-otoscopy (DVO) is one of the modern high-tech methods for otiatric diagnostics that allows to enlarge the image of the area being examined, i.e. the otoscopic picture. DVO has been shown to facilitate the objective dynamic observation of the clinical course of the disease by means of photo- and videodocumentation of he changes in the tympanic membrane and other otoscopicstructures. The DVO technique makes it possible to substantially improve the quality of diagnostics, detect the middle ear conditions at the early stagesof their alteration, and choose the optimal strategy for the

Hearing impairment and otologic problems have been reported to be prevalent among individuals with Down syndrome. This study was designed to determine whether children with Down syndrome have a higher prevalence of auditory abnormalities than do children with other forms of mental retardation. Hearing, impedance, and otoscopic examinations were performed on 30 children with Down syndrome and 30 children without Down syndrome matched for CA and IQ. Results indicated that the children with Down syndrome had a significantly higher prevalence of hearing impairment and otologic disorders.

Otomysis is the infestation of human ears with dipterous larvae. It is a rare medical issue, primarily observed in individuals with underlying vulnerabilities residing in tropical and subtropical regions. A 56-year-old farmer, with a history of chronic otitis media, presented to our emergency department for otalgia and pruritus of the right ear. Otoscopic examination revealed numerous whitish larvae. Management was based on abundant irrigation using saline solution Otomyiasis is a rare disease that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with unexplained otolo

We report a case of a 76-year-old man that referred to our hospital because of progressive mixed right hearing loss, aural fullness and pulsatile tinnitus synchronized with heart beats. Otoscopic examination revealed a reddish pulsatile mass beyond tympanic membrane. CT and MRI scans showed a class C glomus tumor. Anamnesis and a complete physical examination, with careful differential diagnosis, should be obtained to rule out highly vascularized middle ear lesion before any invasive procedure.

We describe a 44-year old man who suffered an isolated external auditory canal granulocytic sarcoma in remission of acute myeloid leukemia. The patient confirmed acute promyelocytic leukemia three years ago and the disease was in remission after treatment. Two months ago he presented pain and hearing loss in the left ear and the symptom developed gradually. At otoscopic examination a tumoral lesion was noted in the external auditory canal and computerized tomography scan showed a mass in the left external acoustic meatus without bone erosion.

The frequency of accidental, traumatic hearing loss is increasing due to a sometimes violently noisy environment and to the development of sports as leisure activities. The diagnosis is based on knowledge of the circumstances of the trauma and on otoscopic examination. Total audiometry localises the damage. Occupational hearing loss forms a special subset of traumatic deafness. This trauma is usually due to intense noise occurring at the work-place. It is of insidious onset, irreversibly progressive and without treatment once under way; Prevention is based on knowledge of the deleterious effec

Examination of the external auditory canals in a group of 53 asymptomatic (before the season) grass pollen-sensitive patients was performed by means of fiberoptic otoscope. The mechanical irritation of the walls of the auditory canals resulted in a cough reflex in 11 patients. An analysis of the lack or presence of any bronchial symptoms, during or out of season, in the whole group was performed. It was concluded that otorespiratory (or otocough) reflex may be a predictive measure for bronchial symptoms among pollinosis patients. In this aspect, the sensitivity of the test was 50 percent, but
