Aquatic polymers can drive pathogen transmission in coastal ecosystems.

Gelatinous polymers including extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) are fundamental to biophysical processes in aquatic habitats, including mediating aggregation processes and functioning as the matrix of biofilms. Yet insight into the impact of these sticky molecules on the environmental transmission of pathogens in the ocean is limited. We used the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii as a model to evaluate polymer-mediated mechanisms that promote transmission of terrestrially derived pathogens to marine fauna and humans. We show that transparent exopolymer particles, a particulate form o

Classification of Brucella spp. isolated from marine mammals by DNA polymorphism at the omp2 locus.

A number of recent reports have described the isolation and characterization of Brucella strains from a wide variety of marine mammals such as seals, porpoises, dolphins and a minke whale. These strains were identified as brucellae by conventional typing tests. However, their overall characteristics were not assimilable to those of any of the six currently recognized Brucella species and it was suggested that they comprise a new nomen species to be called Brucella maris. In the present study we analysed DNA polymorphism at the omp2 locus of 33 marine mammal Brucella strains isolated from seals

Detection of Leptospira spp. in wildlife reservoir hosts in Ontario through comparison of immunohistochemical and polymerase chain reaction genotyping methods.

A total of 460 kidney samples from wildlife (beavers, coyotes, deer, foxes, opossums, otters, raccoons, skunks) were obtained from road-kill and hunter/trapper donations in Ontario between January 2010 and November 2012. The objectives of the study were to detect Leptospira spp. by immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), to map presence of leptospires in wildlife relative to livestock and human populations, and to characterize positive samples by sequencing and comparison to leptospires known to affect domestic animals and humans. The proportion of samples that tested positiv

Coccidioidomycosis in a bottlenose dolphin.

A stranded bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus gilli) succumbed to a pulmonary infection of Coccidioides immitis. The dolphin initially presented with mild inspiratory dyspnea that rapidly worsened over 48 hr to include buoyancy abnormalities and finally death. At necropsy, caseous nodules were observed throughout the lungs and perihilar lymph nodes. On histological examination of tissues, double walled organisms containing endospores characteristic of C. immitis were observed in lung, perihilar lymph nodes, and brain. Pyogranulomatous infiltrates were observed in the lung and perihilar lym

Regional health assessment relating to mercury content of fish caught in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta rivers system.

Seven species of fish were surveyed for muscle tissue mercury content across a broad area of western Alaska. Total mercury levels were determined by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy in 66 fish sampled during 1997. Methylmercury in sampled fish amounted to 97 to 100% of total mercury values. Using mercury consumption risk levels derived from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hazard assessment models, mean total mercury was determined to be above the human critical value of 0.2 g/g (ppm) in 29% of the fish species, and 62% of the fish species contained mercury exceeding the wildlif

Fossil evidence for the origin of aquatic locomotion in archaeocete whales.

Recent members of the order Cetacea (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) move in the water by vertical tail beats and cannot locomote on land. Their hindlimbs are not visible externally and the bones are reduced to one or a few splints that commonly lack joints. However, cetaceans originated from four-legged land mammals that used their limbs for locomotion and were probably apt runners. Because there are no relatively complete limbs for archaic archaeocete cetaceans, it is not known how the transition in locomotory organs from land to water occurred. Recovery of a skeleton of an early fossil cet

Integration of transcriptome-wide association study and gene-based association analysis identifies candidate genes for Hodgkin lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have pinpointed many susceptibility loci for Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL), but their underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: Utilizing GWAS data from the UK Biobank and FinnGen, along with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) statistics from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) and the eQTL Catalogue, we carried out a large-scale gene-level association study using Omnibus Transcriptome Test with Expression Reference Summary data (OTTERS), and gene-based analysis with eQTL Multi-marker Analysis of Genomic Annotation (E-MAGMA)

A new bunya-like virus associated with mass mortality of white-clawed crayfish in the wild.

We report the discovery of a new enveloped, spherical virus belonging to the Phenuiviridae family of negative ssRNA viruses associated with a massive outbreak in a French population of the endangered white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes. We call this virus Bunya-like Brown Spot Virus (BBSV) and characterize it using transmission electronic microscopy, genome sequencing and clinical signs. Infected specimens show discolored brown spots on the cuticle. Using RNA-seq data we assembled a partial sequence for the L, M and S genome segments of BBSV. Phylogenetic analyses using all three s

Estimation of tile drainage contribution to streamflow and nutrient loads at the watershed scale based on continuously monitored data.

Nitrogen losses from artificially drained watersheds degrade water quality at local and regional scales. In this study, we used an end-member mixing analysis (EMMA) together with high temporal resolution water quality and streamflow data collected in the 122 km2 Otter Creek watershed located in northeast Iowa. We estimated the contribution of three end-members (groundwater, tile drainage, and quick flow) to streamflow and nitrogen loads and tested several combinations of possible nitrate concentrations for the end-members. Results indicated that subsurface tile drainage is responsible for at l

Modern CT applications in veterinary medicine.

Although computed tomography (CT) is used primarily for diagnosis in humans, it can also be used to diagnose disease in veterinary patients. CT and associated three-dimensional reconstruction have a role in diagnosis of a range of illnesses in a variety of animals. In a sea turtle with failure to thrive, CT showed a nodal mass in the chest, granulomas in the lungs, and a ball in the stomach. CT of a sea dragon with balance and movement problems showed absence of the swim bladder. In a sloth with failure to thrive, CT allowed diagnosis of a coin in the intestine. CT of a puffin with failure to

Molecular detection of Hepatozoon spp. and Cytauxzoon felis in wild carnivorans and domestic dogs in southern Pantanal wetlands of Brazil with new host records.

In this study, we investigated the occurrence of Hepatozoon spp. and Cytauxzoon felis in spleen samples from 26 wild carnivorans and blood samples from 28 semi-domiciled dogs collected in the Pantanal biome of Brazil. Partial 18S rRNA gene sequences of Hepatozoon spp. were detected in 15 (57.7 %) wild carnivorans and 3 (10.7 %) domestic dogs. A sequence obtained from a domestic dog was similar (99.04 %) to that of Hepatozoon canis from a crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) in the same area of Brazil. Moreover, we report the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis) and the bush dog (Speothos venati

Vagococcus lutrae Isolation in a Cat with Feline Urological Syndrome in Italy: A Case Report.

Vagococcus lutrae is an emerging pathogen that can cause severe disease, especially in immunocompromised patients. Unlike Vagococcus fluvialis, which is recognized as a human and animal pathogen, there are few reports of V. lutrae from human and animal infections. In humans, it has been reported in patients with severe skin lesions and bloodstream infections. In veterinary medicine, V. lutrae was accidentally isolated from a Eurasian otter and a largemouth bass, and only once from the genitourinary tract of a pig with a urinary tract infection. However, the prevalence may be underestimated due

Lipopolysaccharide heterogeneity in Brucella strains isolated from marine mammals.

Smooth lipopolysaccharides (S-LPSs) from Brucella strains isolated from seals, dolphins, porpoises, an otter and a minke whale were characterized by ELISA using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) directed against seven previously defined O-polysaccharide (O-PS) epitopes and by Western blot after SDS-PAGE. All strains studied were A-dominant as shown by specific polyclonal sera and this was also confirmed by the mAbs. However, binding patterns in ELISA of mAbs to the specific common (C) epitopes were rather heterogeneous, and for some strains, such as those isolated from striped dolphins, binding of

Predictive Modeling of Global SARS-CoV-2 Infection Risk in Animals: Unveiling Potential Reservoirs and Informing Health Policy Synergies.

Reports of SARS-CoV-2 infections in animals have increasingly raised concerns about potential natural reservoirs for the virus. However, our understanding of the global distribution and drivers of animal infection risk remains limited. To bridge this knowledge gap, we conducted extensive data mining from various sources and developed machine learning (ML) models to estimate the global probability of SARS-CoV-2 infections in animals. We trained and evaluated three ML models, mapping the distribution of infection risk in well-documented regions and projecting risk in areas with sparse infection

Prevalence of Capillaria plica in Danish wild carnivores.

Capillaria plica is a parasitic nematode belonging to the family Capillariidae. The adult parasites reside in the urinary tract of wild and domestic canines. The infection is most often asymptomatic, but can cause a wide range of symptoms including urinary bladder inflammation, pollacisuria, dysuria and hematuria. Canines acquire the infection by ingesting the intermediate host, the earthworm (Lumbricidae). Epidemiological studies on C. plica infection in wildlife are few and only one previous Danish study examined the prevalence in red foxes, while studies on prevalence in other animals are l
