Potential of the Panama strain of Plasmodium vivax for the testing of malarial vaccines in Aotus nancymai monkeys.

Aotus monkeys were infected with a strain of Plasmodium vivax from Panama to determine its potential for the testing of malarial vaccines. After sporozoite inoculation, 3 splenectomized Aotus nancymai that had been infected previously with Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax had prepatent periods of 13, 15, and 15 days with maximum parasite counts of 12,726/microl, 5,310/microl, and 9,180/microl. Three other A. nancymai previously infected with P. falciparum only had prepatent periods of 17, 15, and 15 days with maximum parasite counts of 44,460/microl, 31,500/microl, and 42,660/microl. Outbreaks and sporadic cases of Salmonella serovar panama studied by DNA fingerprinting and antimicrobial resistance.

In the Principality of Asturias (PA), Spain. three Salmonella serovar Panama outbreaks were registered in August 1998. In order to achieve an accurate identification of the strains implicated in the outbreaks and to study the molecular epidemiology of this serovar in the PA, the isolates collected over 1990-1999 were examined by DNA fingerprinting and antimicrobial resistance analysis. The origin of the isolates was: human (65, of which 20 were associated with the three outbreaks), octopus (2), beef (2), eggs (7), poultry faeces (2), sea water (5), sewage (2) and unknown (1). Sixteen lineages

Contributions of ascariasis to poor nutritional status in children from Chiriqui Province, Republic of Panama.

Relationships between ascariasis and lactose digestion and between ascariasis and food transit time from mouth to caecum were investigated in young children from Chiriqui Province, Republic of Panama. The breath hydrogen method was used in both studies. Ascaris-infected children showed a significantly poorer degree of lactose digestion following a test oral load than uninfected children. Recovery of the capacity of the children to digest lactose was still not fully complete for at least 3 weeks following anthelmintic treatment. On average, the mouth-to-caecum transit time was similar in infect

Integrated surveillance resolves Darién paradox of Oropouche virus emergence in Panama's migration corridor.

Oropouche virus (OROV) spread across the Americas in 2024, yet Panama's Darién migration corridor saw no outbreak until nearly a year after Brazil's January 2024 peak, raising two hypotheses: cryptic circulation masked by diagnostic gaps, or recent introduction under permissive climatic conditions. Here we resolve this paradox using integrated clinical, genomic, and climate-informed surveillance. Among 1,040 individuals tested, 43% were OROV-positive and showed a clinical signature distinct from co-circulating arboviruses, including headache more frequent than in dengue (RR 2.38, 95% CI 1.74-3

Colorectal Cancer in Young Adults in Panama: Clinical, Molecular, and Epidemiological Characterization in a National Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset colorectal cancer (≤49 years) is rising worldwide, yet data from Central America are scarce. We characterized clinical, molecular, and therapeutic features, estimated overall survival, and identified independent prognostic factors in young adults with colorectal cancer in Panama. METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort (2020-2023) from two national oncology referral hospitals. Demographic, clinical, molecular (RAS, microsatellite instability-high), behavioral (tobacco, alcohol, body mass index), and treatment data were collected. Overall survival was estimated using th

Spotted Fever Rickettsioses in Panama: New Cases and the Gaps That Hinder Its Epidemiological Understanding.

Rickettsia rickettsii is the most virulent agent of the genus Rickettsia that causes one of the most relevant vector-borne diseases in the Americas (RRSF). RRSF manifests with many non-specific acute clinical symptoms complicating its diagnosis and can lead to death if not treated appropriately. RRSF has been reported in Canada, the United States of America, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina. In addition to R. rickettsii, mild and severe spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGR) have been reported in the Americas; however, the true prevalence of these diseases is unkno

Factors Related to the Development of Infective Endocarditis in Hemodialysis Patients in a Third-Level Hospital in Panama.

INTRODUCTION: Venous access for hemodialysis (HD) makes patients more susceptible to transient bacteremia, predisposing them to the development of infective endocarditis (IE). Among the risk factors observed in this population are temporary access to HD, hypoalbuminemia, diabetes mellitus, female gender, anemia, and colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). METHODOLOGY: A retrospective case-control study with a one-to-two ratio was carried out on patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing renal replacement therapy with at least one vascular access for HD a

Chemical control of medically important arthropods in Panama: A systematic literature review of historical efforts.

Vector-borne diseases are a major source of morbidity in Panama. Herein, we describe historical usage patterns of synthetic insecticides to control arthropod disease vectors in this country. We examine the influence of interventions by vector control programs on the emergence of insecticide resistance. Chemical control has traditionally focused on two mosquito species: Anopheles albimanus, a major regional malaria vector, and Aedes aegypti, a historical vector of yellow fever, and current vector of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Countrywide populations of An. albimanus depict hyperirritability

Natural malaria infection in anophelines vectors and their incrimination in local malaria transmission in Darién, Panama.

BACKGROUND: More than 85% of the malaria cases in Panama occur in poor, rural and indigenous regions like Darien Province. Vector diversity, infection rate and spatial distribution are important entomological parameters of malaria transmission dynamics. Their understanding is crucial for the development of effective disease control strategies. The objective of this study was to determine the composition of Anopheles species, their natural infection rate and their geographic distribution to better understand the malaria transmission dynamics in Darién, Panama. METHODS: Anophelines mosquitoes w

Assessing the Effect of Climate Variables on the Incidence of Dengue Cases in the Metropolitan Region of Panama City.

The present analysis uses the data of confirmed incidence of dengue cases in the metropolitan region of Panama from 1999 to 2017 and climatic variables (air temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity) during the same period to determine if there exists a correlation between these variables. In addition, we compare the predictive performance of two regression models (SARIMA, SARIMAX) and a recurrent neural network model (RNN-LSTM) on the dengue incidence series. For this data from 1999-2014 was used for training and the three subsequent years of incidence 2015-2017 were used for predicti

Population genomics of Plasmodium vivax in Panama to assess the risk of case importation on malaria elimination.

Malaria incidence in Panama has plateaued in recent years in spite of elimination efforts, with almost all cases caused by Plasmodium vivax. Notwithstanding, overall malaria prevalence remains low (fewer than 1 case per 1000 persons). We used selective whole genome amplification to sequence 59 P. vivax samples from Panama. The P. vivax samples were collected from two periods (2007-2009 and 2017-2019) to study the population structure and transmission dynamics of the parasite. Imported cases resulting from increased levels of human migration could threaten malaria elimination prospects, and fou

Frequency of Toxoplasma gondii and Risk Factors Associated with the Infection in Stray Dogs and Cats of Panama.

Stray animals such as dogs and cats have an important role in maintaining the transmission cycles and dissemination of Toxoplasma gondii. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of T. gondii in stray dogs and cats in six different regions of Panama and determine risk factors associated with the dynamics of infection in each of the studied regions. Data were obtained using serological tests for the detection of anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies. The results of this study revealed an overall infection frequency of 23.73%. The infection frequencies found in dog an

Desiccation resistance in tropical insects: causes and mechanisms underlying variability in a Panama ant community.

Desiccation resistance, the ability of an organism to reduce water loss, is an essential trait in arid habitats. Drought frequency in tropical regions is predicted to increase with climate change, and small ectotherms are often under a strong desiccation risk. We tested hypotheses regarding the underexplored desiccation potential of tropical insects. We measured desiccation resistance in 82 ant species from a Panama rainforest by recording the time ants can survive desiccation stress. Species' desiccation resistance ranged from 0.7 h to 97.9 h. We tested the desiccation adaptation hypothesis,

Taxonomic revision of the species of Parvanachis Radwin, 1968 (Gastropoda: Columbellidae) from the Gulf of Panama.

Species of Parvanachis Radwin, 1968 collected from the Gulf of Panama are anatomically characterized and taxonomically revised. Six species are reported to occur in the region: P. pygmaea (Sowerby, 1832), P. pardalis (Hinds, 1843), P. diminuta (C.B. Adams, 1852), P. albonodosa (Carpenter, 1857), P. milium (Dall, 1916), and P. dalli Bartsch, 1931. Of these six, three are confirmed as described. P. milium was not found in new collections or the previous survey collection and may be more common further south. P. dalli is a synonym of P. pygmaea; and P. albonodosa (auct.) is renamed, because the t

Mosquito-host interactions during and after an outbreak of equine viral encephalitis in Eastern Panama.

Mosquito blood meals provide information about the feeding habits and host preference of potential arthropod-borne disease vectors. Although mosquito-borne diseases are ubiquitous in the Neotropics, few studies in this region have assessed patterns of mosquito-host interactions, especially during actual disease outbreaks. Based on collections made during and after an outbreak of equine viral encephalitis, we identified the source of 338 blood meals from 10 species of mosquitoes from Aruza Abajo, a location in Darien province in eastern Panama.
