Do parents and peers matter? A prospective socio-ecological examination of substance use and sexual risk among African American youth.

We examined the direct contribution of parent and peer risk and promotive factors on youth condom use trajectories, in addition to the indirect influence of these factors via youth's substance use over four years in a sample of urban, African American youth (N=679; 51% female; M=14.86 years; SD=0.65). Growth curve modeling was used to estimate changes in substance use and sexual risk across adolescence and test their association with parent and peer factors. Parent and peer risk factors were strongly associated with increasing substance use as youth aged. Substance use and condom use were inte

The Effectiveness of Peer Support Interventions for Improving Cocaine and Crack Cocaine Treatment Outcomes: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) has been linked to unique challenges and behaviors that may have an impact on how peer support functions regarding persons with CUD. For individuals with active substance use, peer support has been linked to positive impacts in areas such as treatment retention and recovery outcomes. As a result, this paper examines the effectiveness of peer support for the treatment of CUD. METHODOLOGY: Literature searches were conducted in four databases for studies examining peer support interventions for cocaine and/or crack cocaine users. Article selection was under

'You're the best liar in the world': a grounded theory study of rowing athletes' experience of low back pain.

OBJECTIVES: Low back pain (LBP) is common in rowers and leads to considerable disability and even retirement. The athlete voice can help clinicians to better understand sport-related pain disorders. We aimed to capture the lived experience of LBP in rowers. METHODS: Cross-sectional qualitative study using a grounded theory approach. Adult competitive rowers with a rowing-related LBP history were recruited in Australia and Ireland. Data were collected through interviews that explored: context around the time of onset of their LBP and their subsequent journey, experiences of management/treatmen

Labiaplasty: motivation, techniques, and ethics.

Labiaplasty (also known as labia minora reduction) is attracting increasing attention in the media and in online forums. Controversy exists among health-care professionals on how to manage a request for this surgery. Furthermore, the indications for and outcomes of labiaplasty have not yet been systematically assessed, and long-term outcomes have not yet been reported. Labia minora hypertrophy is defined as enlargement of the labia minora; however, the natural variation of labia minora size has scarcely been studied, with only one study suggesting objective criteria. Perception of the 'normal'

Gender's role in misperceptions of peers' sexual motives.

The sexual double standard influences men's and women's sexual attitudes and behavior, leading men and women to consider distinct sexual motives, or reasons whether or not to engage in sexual intercourse (Crawford & Popp 2003; Reiss 1964). The goal of the present paper was to document how the sexual double standard shapes perceptions of peers' sexual motives. We build on past research by using open-ended questions and measuring perceptions of both same-gender and other-gender peers. The sample included 154 heterosexual college students (50% female, 49% European American, 25% Latino American, 2

Pathway From Adverse Interpersonal Experiences to Problematic Mobile Video Gaming Among Vocational Students: The Mediating Role of Psychological Inflexibility and Gender Differences.

Based on the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model, this study aims to explore the relationship between adverse interpersonal experiences (i.e., peer victimization and parent-child conflict) and problematic mobile video gaming (PMVG), the mediating role of psychological inflexibility, and gender differences. A sample of 3,412 vocational students (61.66% male, 16.90 ± 1.12 years) reported on peer victimization, parent-child conflict, psychological inflexibility, and PMVG. Results indicated that parent-child conflict exerted a stronger influence on PMVG among vocational students

Perceptions of peer and parental attitudes toward substance use and actual adolescent substance use: The impact of adolescent-confidant relationships.

Objective: While peer influence is a well-documented risk factor for adolescent substance use, it remains unclear whether peer or parental attitudes have greater impact, and if this relationship is moderated by having a confidant and the relationship between adolescents and their confidant. Method: Pooled (2015-2018) National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data on adolescents (12-17 years) were used. Perceived peer and parental disapproval of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use were dichotomized. We assessed associations between disapproval and past-month tobacco (N = 51,352), alcohol (

Socialization of social anxiety in adolescent crowds.

In this study, we looked at whether social anxiety is socialized, or influenced by peers' social anxiety, more in some peer crowds than others. Adolescents in crowds with eye-catching appearances such as Goths and Punks (here termed Radical), were compared with three comparison groups. Using data from 796 adolescents (353 girls and 443 boys; M ( age ) = 13.36) at three timepoints, the results show that adolescents affiliating with the Radical crowd tended to select peers from the same crowd group. Being a member of a crowd in itself did not predict socialization of social anxiety, but adolesce

Social exclusion, but not withdrawal, is diminished by a friend's level of acceptance: A provisions model.

Using the Actor-Partner-Interdependence Model, a friend's level of peer acceptance on the stability of a child's social withdrawal and peer exclusion was assessed with a sample of 252 fifth- and sixth-grade girls and boys of European and North-African descent from lower- and upper-middle class neighborhoods in Montreal, Quebec, in 2015/2016. Sociometric choices at T1 were used to create 126 mutual friend dyads. Exclusion and withdrawal were measured at T1 and T2 with peer assessments, 8 weeks apart. Findings revealed that children who were highly excluded at T1 were relatively less excluded at

Peer Group Effect on the Development of Adolescents' Problem Behaviors and Depression: Moderating Effects of Group Membership Stability.

PURPOSE: This study investigated peer group socialization of problem behaviors and depression during early adolescence. The research specifically examined how the stability of group membership moderates the relationship between group-level behaviors and individual outcomes. METHODS: A six-month longitudinal design was employed, involving 2526 Grade 7 students. The social cognitive map and multilevel modeling were used to identify peer group structures and analyze behavioral trajectories over time. RESULTS: Peer groups demonstrated high stability, as 80% of groups maintained at least 50% of t

Nonconformist tendencies related to risky choices in female methamphetamine abstainers.

Background: Many experimental studies and theoretical models have tried to explain the multifaceted formation of drug addiction. In most addiction models, social factors are an important component; however, few empirical studies have investigated the social influences on the safe or risky choices of drug-addicted individuals during the abstinence stage. Objectives: To investigate the behavioral patterns of female methamphetamine abstainers under social influence. Methods: Thirty-seven female methamphetamine abstainers (average abstinence time: 8.61 ± 4.75 months) and 40 matched controls perfor

"My friends make it feel like I'm the same": A qualitative study of psychosocial and peer factors in adolescent self-management of chronic conditions.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with chronic conditions are at risk for poor health outcomes related to unsuccessful self-management. Additionally, the existing literature suggests that youth with chronic conditions are also at risk for experiencing difficulties in their social and peer relationships. However, the influence of peers and other psychosocial factors on self-management remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To describe the interaction between psychosocial and peer relationship factors and self-management behaviors among adolescents with chronic conditions to identify targets for intervent

Parenting behaviors and deviant peer affiliation among Chinese adolescents: the mediating role of psychological reactance and the moderating role of gender.

Given the negative impact of deviant peer affiliation on adolescent behavioral development, understanding its underlying mechanisms is essential. Drawing on social development model, psychological reactance theory and adolescent-limited delinquency theory, this study examined the relationship between parenting behaviors and adolescents' deviant peer affiliation, as well as the mediating role of reactance and the moderating role of gender. The research involved 1,822 high school students (Mage = 15.28 years, SDage = 2.40) from two provinces in China. All students completed a face-to-face questi

Act Environmentally When Peers Do So? The Effect of Friends' and Strangers' Resource Extraction on Preschool Children's Pro-Environmental Behavior.

Throughout childhood development, children learn social norms by observing how others behave. The current study used an adapted simplified public forest task, in which groups of three children sharing 30 trees, to investigate whether observing peers-friends or strangers-who demonstrated a lower-resource-extraction norm (i.e., cutting 4/5 trees) or a higher-resource-extraction norm (i.e., cutting 15/16 trees) would influence children's pro-environmental behavior. Participants were 5-year-old and 6-year-old children from kindergarten. Information about peers' resource extraction was presented ve

Teen dating violence and the COVID-19 pandemic: trends from a longitudinal study in Texas.

PURPOSE: Teen dating violence (TDV) is a global public health and safety issue causing health impacts to youth people. This study aimed to examine: (1) the impact of the pandemic on TDV victimisation rates and (2) socioecological factors associated with sustained risk for TDV victimisation during the first year of COVID-19. METHODS: Data are from an ongoing randomised controlled trial of a TDV prevention programme in Texas (n=2768). We conducted annual assessments in 2019-2021. We used regression modelling to assess demographic, individual, peer and family factors associated with TDV risks.
