Plexiform neurofibroma infiltrating uterine cervix and parametrium, causing hydronephrosis: A case report and review of the literature.

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 is a genetic disorder resulting in RAS pathway activation. As a result, risk of developing both benign and malignant neoplasms is higher, compared with the general population. Plexiform neurofibromas are benign tumors of the peripheral nerve sheath affecting 40%-50% of patients with neurofibromatosis Type 1. Cervical-parametrial plexiform neurofibroma is a very rare neoplasm. Here we present the ninth case in the literature. A 37-year-old woman presented with chronic pelvic pain and a pelvic mass that was 73 × 33 mm in size. Most of the mass was located between the pro

Robot-assisted laparoscopic resection of giant pelvic solitary fibrous tumor: a case report with literature review.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with a low incidence, and pelvic SFT is extremely uncommon. Due to its insidious onset and nonspecific imaging features, preoperative diagnosis is difficult. We reported a 34-year-old male patient with a giant pelvic SFT found incidentally during physical examination, complicated with left hydronephrosis and hydroureter. Preoperative imaging revealed a large heterogeneous enhanced mass in the pelvic cavity. Robot-assisted laparoscopic resection of the tumor was performed successfully, accompanied by simultaneous ureteral reimplantatio

Pathologic diagnosis, origin, and natural history of pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Mucinous ascites and pools of mucin within the peritoneal cavity associated with neoplastic, mucinous epithelium are the characteristic features of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Clinically, PMP presents with abdominal distension and gelatinous ascites. In female patients, pelvic masses can be seen. Radiologic findings on computed tomography include scalloping of the hepatic and splenic margins and dense ascites. Surgically, PMP is encountered as grossly visible mucin in the peritoneal cavity. The presence of mucin outside of the appendix, in the right lower quadrant, and beyond is an important

Childhood nonovarian female genital tract cancers in Britain, 1962-1978. Descriptive epidemiology and long-term survival.

The files of the Childhood Cancer Research Group ( CCRG ) and of the Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancers ( OSCC ) were scrutinized for all malignant genital neoplasms other than ovarian tumor registered in England, Scotland, and Wales in the period 1962 to 1978. After a review of the records and of the available pathologic reports, a total of 55 cases were confirmed, indicating an average incidence of about 0.5 cases per million female children per year, with no obvious trend over the study period. These included 9 (16.4%) cases originating from the vulva, 28 (50.9%) from the vagina, 3 (5.5%) f

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube: a case report.

A primary leiomyosarcoma (LMS) arising from the left fallopian tube in a perimenopausal 48-year-old woman is reported. Primary tubal LMS is an uncommon, exceedingly rare neoplasm, accounting for only a few reported cases so far. To our knowledge, the present case is the 17th tubal LMS reported in the English-language literature. The diagnosis is usually made at the time of laparotomy for a pelvic or adnexal mass or other gynaecological indications. As in ovarian neoplasms, the mainstay of treatment is represented by debulking surgery consisting of total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpin

Imaging of the ischiorectal fossa.

A retrospective evaluation of 500 routine abdominal computed tomography scans revealed 21 cases of ischiorectal fossa disease in 16 patients. Pathologic processes included involvement by primary and secondary neoplasms, usually of gynecologic origin; rectal prolapse; and abscess. These abnormalities can be missed if the ischiorectal fossae are not included in routine abdominal scans. The anatomy of the ischiorectal fossae and their relationship to other pelvic organs are well demonstrated with high-resolution computed tomography scans as well as by magnetic resonance imaging.

Advantage of laparoscopic resection for pelvic Schwannoma: Case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Single pelvic schwannomas are rare tumor arising from the retrorectal, lateral or obturatory space. Laparoscopic approach to schwannoma located in lateral pelvic space has been previously described only in one case report. We present a case of a successful laparoscopic resection of pelvic schwannoma emphasizing the advantages of such a minimal invasive approach. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 54-years-old, obese, male patient was admitted to our hospital referring dysuria and strangury. Abdominal CT scan showed a lateral pelvic well-circumscribed mass with smooth regular margins. A CT-

Incidental appendiceal mucinous neoplasm mimicking a left adnexal mass: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is a rare type of appendiceal tumors which can present in a variety of symptoms and is difficult to diagnose. Preoperative diagnosis depends mainly on diagnostic imaging such as ultrasonography and computerized tomography (CT) scan. This uncommon case report discusses an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm mimicking a left adnexal mass on presentation, physical examination and diagnostic imaging findings. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This is a 61-year-old female found to have a large left adnexal mass during follow up ultrasonography. The patient refused further

High-output cardiac failure: an unusual manifestation of intravenous leiomyomatosis.

Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a rare uterine neoplasm characterized by nodular or wormlike masses of histologically benign smooth muscle growing within myometrial veins and extending variable distances into the veins of contiguous organs and major pelvic veins. In some cases, there has been extension into the gonadal or iliac veins to the vena cava and right atrium, causing symptoms of congestive heart failure and an eventual fatal outcome. We present a report of the first case in which high-output cardiac failure was caused by the development of arteriovenous shunting within the intravenous c

Diagnosis and management of endometriosis of the colon and rectum.

Colon and rectal endometriosis is a relatively rare entity that may have a wide array of clinical symptomatology and radiographic findings. Thirty-two patients with a diagnosis of colon or rectal endometriosis were seen and treated at the Ferguson Clinic between 1960 and 1986. Diagnostic, pathologic, and therapeutic findings were reviewed. All patients, except one, had large-bowel symptoms. Ten patients had previous histories of pelvic endometriosis. When endometriosis of the colon causes significant symptoms or a neoplasm cannot be ruled out, partial colectomy is recommended. If pelvic endome

A Large Pure Uterine Lipoma: Its Diagnosis by Pelvic MRI and Histopathology.

The patient is a 74-year-old female previously diagnosed with an ovarian tumor at age 55. No changes were noted for one year; however, she was lost to follow-up. Eighteen years later, she presented to a local clinic complaining of diffuse abdominal and flank pain. Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, CT, and gynecological examination showed a fatty pelvic tumor of approximately 12 cm in diameter. A left ovarian teratoma was suspected, and per the patient's request, she was transferred to Kobe Adventist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Pelvic MRI revealed no ovarian enlargement; howev

Torsion and Rupture of a Wandering Pelvic Accessory Spleen Associated with Essential Thrombocythemia: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The pelvic accessory spleen is a rare anomaly, and its diagnosis is challenging. Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that can cause secondary myelofibrosis and splenomegaly. We report a case of torsion and rupture of a large wandering pelvic accessory spleen associated with ET. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old man with a history of ET presented with acute abdominal pain. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a 9-cm pelvic mass with surrounding high-density fluid consistent with a hematoma, indicating its rupture. He was diagnosed with ET 8 years earlier, and

FDG PET/CT Findings of Extrarenal Wilms Tumor Originating From the Spinal Cord.

Extrarenal Wilms tumor (ERWT) is an extremely rare neoplasm of childhood. It occurs predominantly in retroperitoneum and pelvic or inguinal region without involvement of the kidneys. Although the importance of FDG PET/CT in Wilms tumor is well known, its use in ERWT is limited. Herein, we present FDG PET/CT findings of a 3-year-old girl with a lumbar mass, which was later diagnosed with ERWT.

Uterine tumour resembling ovarian sex cord tumour: first report of a large series with follow-up.

AIMS: Uterine tumour resembling ovarian sex cord tumour (UTROSCT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis. While it is considered a neoplasm of uncertain but low malignant potential, there is limited evidence for this as there are no large studies with follow-up. We aimed to determine the clinical behaviour of this uncommon neoplasm and investigate clinicopathological parameters which predict behaviour. METHODS AND RESULTS: From a series of 34 cases of UTROSCT, mainly from consultation practice, we obtained follow-up information which was obtained by contacting referring

Ovarian Sclerosing Stromal Tumor and Müllerian Cyst in an 11-yr-old Girl: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Sclerosing stromal tumor (SST) is an extremely rare ovarian neoplasm that primarily affects young female individuals. Patients with SST often present with pelvic pain and menstrual irregularities. Herein, we report a case of SST of the ovary in an 11-yr-old girl with symptoms of abdominal pain and menstrual irregularities. A preoperative diagnosis of tumors in the left adnexa and right ovary was made by pelvic ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, and the patient underwent exploratory laparotomy and laparoscopic cystectomy. The ovarian masses were removed and proven to be SST in the

Primary pure small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Small cell carcinoma is a highly aggressive neuroendocrine malignancy that most commonly arises in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, or pancreas. Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium is exceedingly rare, and its clinical characteristics, diagnostic criteria, and optimal treatment strategies remain poorly defined. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 74-year-old postmenopausal Chinese woman (gravida 4, para 4) who presented with a 20-day history of irregular vaginal bleeding. Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound performed at an outside institution 1 week

First Case Report of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma Diagnosed After Transcervical Fibroid Ablation.

Background: Uterine fibroids are benign monoclonal neoplasms of the myometrium, representing the most common female pelvic neoplasms globally. Treatments may be invasive, such as hysterectomy and myomectomy, non-invasive, such as medical therapy or focused ultrasound, or minimally invasive, such as transcervical radiofrequency ablation (TFA). To date, more than 12,000 women have been treated worldwide using TFA with the Sonata® System. Case Presentation: We present the first case report of TFA on a presumptive fibroid that was initially reclassified as a STUMP (smooth muscle tumor of uncertain

Leydig cell tumour and mature ovarian teratoma: rare androgen-secreting ovarian tumours in postmenopausal women.

Androgen-secreting ovarian tumours are extremely rare accounting for <5% of all ovarian neoplasms. They are more frequent in postmenopausal women and should be suspected in the case of a rapid onset of androgenic symptoms. We report 4 cases of postmenopausal women who presented with signs of virilisation. All patients revealed increased serum levels of testosterone, normal dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate and negative pelvic ultrasound for adnexal masses. An androgen-secreting ovarian tumour was suspected and all of them were submitted to bilateral oophorectomy. Histology confirmed the diagnosis
