Labial piercing and localized periodontal destruction - partial periodontal regeneration following periodontal debridement and free gingival graft.

Localized periodontal destruction has been reported as a rare complication of intraoral piercings. The purpose of this case report was to illustrate the destructive nature of a lip stud and to describe the successful treatment of this case. The lip stud was removed and supra- and subgingival debridement was performed. Because of a shallow vestibule, the absence of keratinized gingiva, and the strong frenulum insertion at the gingival margins, a free gingival graft was placed. Subsequently the patient demonstrated a significant amount of osseous regeneration and partial coverage of the recessio

Effect of Human Periodontal Ligament Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles on Macrophage Pyroptosis and Periodontal Inflammatory Injury in Periodontitis.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease resulting from subgingival microorganisms. Human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) can be applied in periodontal tissue regeneration. This study investigated the effect of hPDLSC-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) on periodontitis. hPDLSC-derived EVs were isolated and identified. The murine model of periodontitis was established by ligation, and the cell model of periodontitis was established by treatment of macrophages with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The effects of EVs on macrophage pyroptosis and periodontal inflammatory injury were measured

Periodontal diagnosis in the context of the 2017 classification system of periodontal diseases and conditions: presentation of a patient with periodontitis localised to the molar teeth.

The objective of this case report is to illustrate the diagnosis and classification of periodontitis, according to the 2017 classification system, as recommended in the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) implementation plan. A 37-year-old female was diagnosed with periodontitis (molar-incisor pattern), stage III, grade C, currently unstable. Several issues pertinent to the diagnosis of localised forms of periodontitis in young patients are discussed in relation to the current and previous classification systems. Periodontitis can be limited to a few sites and this case highlights the impo

Periodontal management in patients with diabetes: the impact of periodontal treatment on cardiometabolic biomarkers.

INTRODUCTION: Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and periodontitis present an independent bidirectional relationship. While T2DM is associated with a higher prevalence, incidence, and severity of periodontitis, periodontitis might worsen glycemic control and inflammatory biomarker levels in diabetics. Although there is no standardized therapy for the treatment of diabetic patients with periodontitis, different periodontal interventions report improvements in clinical and cardiometabolic parameters. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the current evidence regarding the clinical management of patients with T

A Blissful Role of Probiotic Therapy as an Adjunct to Periodontal Surgery in the Treatment of Periodontitis.

Background Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that alters the alveolar bone structure, requiring treatment ranging from non-surgical to surgical periodontal therapies based on its severity. Surgical interventions, such as the modified Widman flap procedure and the open flap technique combined with methods like platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), guided tissue regeneration (GTR), and bone grafts, aim to reduce periodontal pockets and regenerate lost tissues. The presence of pathogenic bacteria and the absence of beneficial bacteria contribute to periodontitis, with probiotics-live microorg

Role of periodontal ligament fibroblasts in periodontitis: pathological mechanisms and therapeutic potential.

Periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLFs) play a crucial role in the etiology of periodontitis and periodontal tissue regeneration. In healthy periodontal tissues, PDLFs maintain the homeostasis of periodontal soft and hard tissues as well as the local immune microenvironment. PDLFs also have the potential for multidirectional transdifferentiation and are involved in periodontal tissue regeneration. On the other hand, PDLFs can become dysfunctional and acquire an inflammatory phenotype to secret various inflammatory cytokines when affected by pathological factors. These cytokines further trigge

Metabolomics analysis in saliva from periodontally healthy, gingivitis and periodontitis patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate metabolomics markers in the saliva of patients with periodontal health, gingivitis and periodontitis. BACKGROUND: The use of metabolomics for diagnosing and monitoring periodontitis is promising. Although several metabolites have been reported to be altered by inflammation, few studies have examined metabolomics in saliva collected from patients with different periodontal phenotypes. METHODS: Saliva samples collected from a total of 63 patients were analysed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) followed by ELISA for interleukin (IL)-1β. The

Hydrogen sulfide exacerbated periodontal inflammation and induced autophagy in experimental periodontitis.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the metabolite produced by gram-negative bacteria, is present in deep periodontal pockets of periodontitis patients at high concentrations. The harsh conditions in the diseased periodontium may stimulate a local autophagy response. However, how H2S participates in pathogenesis and whether H2S induces autophagy in periodontitis remain partially unknown. In this article, we determined the role of the slow-releasing H2S donor GYY4137 in experimental periodontitis and its possible regulation in autophagy involved. We found that GYY4137 dose-dependently decreased cell viabil

Prepubertal Periodontitis in a Patient with Combined Classical and Periodontal Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

We report an extremely rare case of combined classical and periodontal Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) with early severe periodontitis and a generalized lack of attached gingiva. A German family with classical EDS was investigated by physical and dental evaluation and exome and Sanger sequencing. Due to the specific periodontal phenotype in the affected child, an additional diagnosis of periodontal EDS was suspected. Physical and genetic examination of two affected and three unaffected family members revealed a family diagnosis of classical EDS with a heterozygous mutation in COL5A1 (c.1502del; p

Importance of Mechanical Periodontal Therapy in Patients with Diabetes Type 2 and Periodontitis.

Periodontitis is an infectious and inflammatory disease of high prevalence worldwide and constitutes a significant oral health problem. It can lead to tooth loss. In addition, the local inflammatory process can cause the release of inflammatory mediators in the bloodstream and, consequently, contribute to the emergence of systemic effects as cardiovascular and diabetic complications. The purpose of this mini review is to alert health professionals about the risk that periodontitis represents for the onset or exacerbation of complications in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to emph
