Observation of magnon polarons in the van der Waals itinerant ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2.

Magnon polarons, hybrid quasiparticles embodying the intrinsic coupling between spin and lattice dynamics, bridge magnetism and phononics in quantum materials. Despite extensive studies in magnetic insulators, spectroscopic evidence for magnon polarons has been scarcely reported in metallic ferromagnets. Here, we reveal magnon polarons at the nanoscale in single crystals of Fe3GeTe2 using inelastic scanning tunneling spectroscopy (ISTS) with a milli-Kelvin scanning tunneling microscope. While ISTS of phonons or magnons has been widely explored, our study focuses on two-dimensional van der Waal

High-pressure superconductivity in hexagonal CaSH3 with a nonclathrate molecular hydrogen structure.

Understanding the interplay between pressure-driven Fermi surface electronic states and phonon hardening is essential for exploring high-temperature superconducting materials. In this study, using first-principles structure searches, we identify two thermodynamically stable ternary Ca-S-H phases at 200 GPa: P6̄m2 CaSH3 and C2/m Ca2SH6. Structural and bonding analyses reveal that both compounds consist of non-cage-like quasi-H2 units formed by H-H covalent bonds, together with weak ionic interactions between Ca and S, and exhibit metallic character. Among them, CaSH3 exhibits a superconducting

Thermal conductance of atomic-scale glass reaches 40% of quantum limit.

Heat dissipation limits the performance of nanoscale electronic and quantum devices, yet the fundamental limits of phonon-mediated heat transport at the atomic scale remains unknown. By contrast, atomic-scale electron transport has been extensively studied over the past decades using electronic break-junction platforms. Here we show a custom-fabricated, picowatt-resolution scanning thermal probe that uses thermal feedback to create phononic break junctions at the ultimate atomic scale. We report the formation of atomic junctions of amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2)-an archetypal glass-capturi

Rattling vibration-induced low lattice thermal conductivity in Zintl-phase CaLiBi thermoelectrics.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials have gained significant attention as crucial candidates for addressing the escalating challenges associated with environmental pollution and the global energy crisis. Utilizing first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory, the crystal structure and the electronic and thermal transport properties of the CaLiBi compound are explored in the present work. The elastic modulus, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, and phonon dispersion curves reveal the high mechanical, thermal, and dynamic stabilities of the CaLiBi compound. The CaLiBi compo

Engineering the spin-flip limited exciton dephasing in colloidal CdSe/CdS quantum dots.

We have measured the intrinsic exciton dephasing in high-quality zinc blende CdSe/CdS colloidal quantum dots in the temperature range from 5 to 170 K using a sensitive three-beam photon echo technique in heterodyne detection, which is not affected by spectral diffusion. Pure dephasing via acoustic phonons dominates the initial dynamics, followed by an exponential zero-phonon line dephasing. From the temperature dependence of the zero-phonon line dephasing, the exciton lifetime, and the exciton thermalization within its fine structure, we show that the zero-phonon line dephasing of the lowest b

Disentangling Mass-Energy Coupling to Reveal the Intrinsic Lattice Thermal Conductivity of Superionic Cu2-xS.

Strong mass-energy coupling and associated Soret/Dufour effects impede an accurate determination of the lattice thermal conductivity (κL) in superionic Cu-S systems. To extract the phononic κL under zero net ionic current, we employ a convective-invariant Schur complement framework combined with cepstral analysis. We find that in Cu1.8S, the percolating vacancy network with confined segment dynamics guides and suppresses random hopping but promotes correlated directional diffusion, leading to lower Cu diffusivity than in Cu2S despite a higher vacancy concentration. This correlated motion induc

IR laser induced spectra in novel crystals CdTe-CuInTe2.

The novel crystalline alloys CdTe-CuInTe2 were synthesized. The photoinduced spectral changes of the anharmonic phonon modes were explored by cw CO2 laser at power about 2 kW in the vicinity of the 1650 cm(-1) mode. The changes of the intensities for principal phonon modes were found. These modes were assigned both to harmonic as well as anharmonic modes. All the measurements are studied after the Ir illumination. The performed quantum chemical calculations with application of the norm-conserving pseudopotential method and Green functions allow to identify the origin of the content dependent a

Observation of size-dependent thermalization in CdSe nanocrystals using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy.

We report heat dissipation times in semiconductor nanocrystals of CdSe. Specifically, a previously unresolved, subnanosecond decay component in the low-temperature photoluminescence decay dynamics exhibits longer decay lifetimes (tens to hundreds of picoseconds) for larger nanocrystals as well as a size-independent, ~25-meV spectral shift. We attribute the fast relaxation to transient phonon-mediated relaxation arising from nonequilibrium acoustic phonons. Following acoustic phonon dissipation, the dark exciton state recombines more slowly via LO-phonon assistance resulting in the observed spe

Operational regimes of lasers based on gain media with a large Raman scattering cross-section.

We report on unusual regimes of operation of a laser with a gain medium with a large Raman scattering cross-section, which is often inherent in new types of gain media such as colloidal and epitaxial quantum dots and perovskite materials. These media are characterized by a strong electron-phonon coupling. Using the Fröhlich Hamiltonian to describe the electron-phonon coupling in such media, we analyze the operation of the system above the lasing threshold. We show that below a critical value of the Fröhlich constant, the laser can only operate in the conventional regime: namely, there are cohe

Anomalous enhancement of thermal conduction across twisted van der Waals heterointerfaces.

The advent of interlayer twist has introduced a groundbreaking paradigm, unveiling novel physical phenomena spanning from correlated insulating states to superconductivity. This unprecedented platform facilitates the manipulation of electrons and extends its capabilities to the effective control of bosons. For phonons, a consensus has been reached that interlayer twist greatly suppresses phonon transport as it breaks the symmetry of the lattice. Here, we report a counterintuitive experimental observation in which the interlayer twist can significantly promote the transportation of phonons acro

Effects of guest molecular occupancy and electric field on thermal conductivity of CO2 hydrates.

CO2 hydrate technology plays a pivotal role in carbon dioxide capture/storage, gas separation, and natural gas recovery from natural gas hydrates, while simultaneously serving as a cost-effective phase-change material for thermal energy storage. The thermal transport characteristics of CO2 hydrates are of particular importance in these promising applications. Here, the role of CO2 molecular occupancy and external electric fields on the thermal conductivity (κ) of sI-type CO2 hydrates is explored using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Results reveal that increasing CO2 occupancy in l

Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and Distinctive Electronic Features Lead Giant Thermoelectricity in Layered MSe (M = Ga, In, Tl).

We present a systematic comparative study of the structural, mechanical, vibrational, electronic, and thermoelectric (TE) properties of layered III-VI semiconductors GaSe, InSe, and TlSe using first-principles density functional theory and phonon transport calculations. Among the three, GaSe exhibits the highest thermodynamic and mechanical stability, whereas InSe displays ductile behavior, and TlSe remains mechanically softer, with lower elastic moduli. This reduced mechanical stiffness in TlSe plays a crucial role in its thermal transport properties, particularly contributing to a significan

Relativistic and Anharmonic Contributions to Low Thermal Conductivity in Topological Material BiTe.

Understanding heat transport in topological materials containing heavy elements remains a challenge because relativistic effects and higher-order lattice anharmonicity may both be relevant to thermal transport. Here, BiTe is investigated as a representative system in which the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and higher-order phonon anharmonicity are examined separately. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory confirm that SOC is essential to the topological electronic structure, while machine-learning moment-tensor potentials enable a quantitative assessmen

Optimizing the quasi-equilibrium state of hot carriers in all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals through Mn doping: fundamental dynamics and device perspectives.

Hot carrier (HC) cooling accounts for the significant energy loss in lead halide perovskite (LHP) solar cells. Here, we study HC relaxation dynamics in Mn-doped LHP CsPbI3 nanocrystals (NCs), combining transient absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We demonstrate that Mn2+ doping (1) enlarges the longitudinal optical (LO)-acoustic phonon bandgap, (2) enhances the electron-LO phonon coupling strength, and (3) adds HC relaxation pathways via Mn orbitals within the bands. The spectroscopic study shows that the HC cooling process is decelerated after doping und

External-field and pressure-controlled magneto-optical response in alloy-composition engineered GaAs/Al λ Ga1-λ As nanomaterials with asymmetrical Gaussian confinement.

Hydrostatic-pressure, external electric-field, and aluminium-composition-controlled magneto-optical response in the GaAs/Al λ Ga1-λ As nanostructure with asymmetrical Gaussian confinement, is investigated applying the projection-operator framework. The magneto-optical response is systematically probed via the optically detected magneto-phonon resonance (ODMPR) effect, including strength, shift, and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the ODMPR peak induced by intersubband and intrasubband transitions for absorption and emission processes of LO-phonons. The results show that: (i) the magneto-o

Intrinsic Curvature-Induced Regulation of Interfacial Thermal Transport in Janus TMD Heterostructures.

Efficient interfacial thermal transport in two-dimensional heterostructures is essential for improving heat dissipation and operational stability in next-generation energy conversion and energy electronic devices. Here, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate the thermal transport behaviors of WSSe/MoS2 and WSSe/MoSe2 lateral heterostructures. Unlike the commonly assumed flat interface, both heterostructures spontaneously form an intrinsically curved interface after relaxation, introducing a unique structural feature for phonon transport. Room-temperature second sound in isotopically pure graphite.

The observation of second sound-a propagating wave-like manifestation of hydrodynamic heat transport-in solid crystals has been confined to a handful of materials at cryogenic temperatures, as disorder and Umklapp scattering suppress this phenomenon at room temperature. Here, we report the direct observation of second sound at ambient conditions in isotopically purified graphite. Using transient thermal grating spectroscopy, we measure a distinct damped oscillatory signal that provides unambiguous evidence of second sound, decisively distinguishing it from diffusive and ballistic transport reg

Can Non-Thermal Microwave Irradiation Inactivate Viruses? A Review with Some Computations.

The use of non-thermal, human-safe electromagnetic (e.m.) waves in the GHz range to inactivate viruses has been proposed by a few groups. It is allegedly based on a transformation of a microwave photon into a phonon, which would produce a so-called Structure Resonance Energy Transfer (SRET) strong enough to break the capsid due to Confined Acoustic Vibration (CAV) at virus-specific frequencies. However, it is well known that e.m. photons' absorption in water or in organic media does not generate single phonons at the same frequency. Rather, it generates many thermal phonons across a wide frequ

Strain-induced localization as a universal mechanism toward high mobility in 2D semiconductors.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with atomic thickness have shown great potential for application in high-performance microelectronic devices due to the lack of short channel effects, but their carrier mobility is often limited by strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC) compared to that of three-dimensional (3D) semiconductors. Particularly, the hole mobility in 2D materials is typically much lower than the electron mobility, creating a critical bottleneck for realizing complementary electronics. In this work, we propose and validate a universal strategy to significantly enhance mobility by t

Nanoscale Thermal and Mechanical Responses of Lithium Fluoride in the Solid Electrolyte Interphase under Coupled Temperature and Pressure Conditions.

Lithium fluoride (LiF)-rich solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) are promising for improving the safety and durability of lithium-based batteries due to their mechanical strength, thermal stability, and chemical inertness. However, a fundamental understanding of the behaviors of LiF under coupled thermal and mechanical stress conditions, commonly encountered during battery cycling and abuse, remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the thermal-mechanical responses of LiF at the nanoscale using molecular dynamics simulations and phonon analysis. LiF exhibits excellent mechanical stability
