An eye for inequality: how trachoma relates to poverty in Tanzania and Vietnam.

PURPOSE: An important challenge for trachoma control strategies is to break the circle of poverty, poor hygiene and poor health by bringing its benefits to the poor. This article aims to assess to what extent trachoma is a disease of the poor, and trachoma services reach the poor in Tanzania and Vietnam. METHODS: Individual level data on trachoma prevalence (active trachoma and trichiasis) and utilization of trachoma-related services were collected in both countries in 2004. Prevalence data were also available for Vietnam in 2001. We used household level data to construct an asset index as ou

Chronic poverty and childhood asthma in the Maritimes versus the rest of Canada.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of higher long-term poverty rates in the Maritimes as an explanation for higher rates of asthma among children 2-7 years of age. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY), logistic regressions examine associations between poverty duration and the probability of a child having been diagnosed with asthma, having a current asthma attack or experiencing wheezing in the past 12 months, controlling for other known determinants. RESULTS: NLSCY data indicate that 15.9% of Maritime children have been diagnosed w

Breastfeeding pattern in a population with different levels of poverty in Southern Brazil.

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 477 poor children aged 12-59 months in order to investigate their breastfeeding pattern, taking into account the poverty level of their families. Although the population living in extreme poverty had the same pattern of breastfeeding as the rest of the poor population, the former group should still have priority in breastfeeding promotion programs, since they are the population who benefit most with breastfeeding.

Climate change and infectious diseases: breaking the poverty-disease-environment trap.

Climate change and infectious diseases jointly form a self-reinforcing poverty disease environment trap that disproportionately harms impoverished populations in low- and middle-income countries. Climate change amplifies the transmission of vector -borne, water-borne, and zoonotic infectious diseases by expanding vector distribution, triggering water source contamination via extreme weather, and disrupting ecological balance. Poverty worsens vulnerability due to insufficient health infrastructure, limited resource access, and weak adaptive capacity, with sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia facin

Health-related quality of life among urban children living in poverty.

Poverty is one of the challenges and barriers to children's well-being. Although studies have sought to understand many aspects of children's quality of life, there is still an urgency to comprehend Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among children of the urban poor. Therefore, concentrating on urban poverty in Malaysia, the study aims to investigate the issue by comprehensively analysing how gender, age conceptualised as adolescent category, number of siblings, internet access, and the extent of family healthy living style affect the children's HRQoL measured as psychological, physical, f

Neighbourhood Poverty Histories and Severe Maternal Morbidity Across California Census Tracts.

BACKGROUND: Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and its racial and ethnic inequities are the result of a mixture of risk factors ranging from clinical comorbidities to socio-economic contexts. One under-explored dimension is neighbourhood contexts. OBJECTIVES: In order to understand the impact of neighbourhood contexts on SMM, this study investigates the relationship between a 20-year history of neighbourhood poverty and SMM among 8.6 million births in California from 2000 to 2018 and assesses effect measure modification by race/ethnicity and nativity. METHODS: Data include hospital live births

The Legacy of Redlining: Increasing Childhood Asthma Disparities through Neighborhood Poverty.

Rationale: Identifying the root causes of racial disparities in childhood asthma is critical for health equity. Objectives: To determine whether the racist policy of redlining in the 1930s led to present-day disparities in childhood asthma by increasing community-level poverty and decreasing neighborhood socioeconomic position (SEP). Methods: We categorized census tracts at the birth address of participants from the Children's Respiratory and Environmental Workgroup birth cohort consortium into categories A, B, C, and D as defined by the Home Owners Loan Corporation, with D being the highest p

Neglected tropical diseases risk correlates with poverty and early ecosystem destruction.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases affect the most vulnerable populations and cause chronic and debilitating disorders. Socioeconomic vulnerability is a well-known and important determinant of neglected tropical diseases. For example, poverty and sanitation could influence parasite transmission. Nevertheless, the quantitative impact of socioeconomic conditions on disease transmission risk remains poorly explored. METHODS: This study investigated the role of socioeconomic variables in the predictive capacity of risk models of neglected tropical zoonoses using a decade of epidemiological d

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases: a neglected category of poverty-associated plagues.

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSD) are a heterogeneous category of infectious diseases in which parasite-host interactions are confined to the upper layer of the skin. The six major EPSD are scabies, pediculosis (capitis, corporis and pubis), tungiasis and hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans. We summarize the current knowledge on EPSD and show that these diseases are widespread, polyparasitism is common, and significant primary and secondary morbidity occurs. We show that poverty favours the presence of animal reservoirs, ensures ongoing transmission, facilitates atypical methods of

Pokies and poverty: problem gambling risk factor geography in New Zealand.

Up to 2% of adults in New Zealand can be considered problem gamblers, where the activity has an impact on the well-being of those who gamble, and often their close associates. The most common activity involves non-casino gaming machines (NCGMs). This paper explores the geography of gambling 'opportunity' at small-area scales, and finds excess provision in those areas classified as highly deprived. Geographically weighted regression has been used to investigate the possibility that the degree of inequity in NCGM provision varies across New Zealand. As machines are licensed, this provides an opp

Family endowments and multidimensional poverty among urban older adults living alone.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in family endowments play a pivotal role in shaping the multidimensional poverty among urban older adults living alone (UOALA). METHODS: This study conducted an empirical analysis using data from 1,656 UOALA in five different cities in China to investigate the relationship between family endowments and the occurrence of multidimensional poverty among UOALA. RESULTS: The findings illustrate an expanding and deepening scale of poverty among UOALA, particularly manifested in dimensions of physical health and mental well-being. Females, super-older adults, and those resid

Incentivizing Tobacco Helpline Engagement in Persistent Poverty Counties: A Randomized Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent poverty counties (PPCs) are U.S. counties where ≥20% of residents have lived in poverty for ≥30 years. Cancer mortality rates in PPCs are exceptionally high due, in part, to elevated smoking rates. STUDY DESIGN: The study used a parallel 2-group randomized controlled trial design. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Participants were Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline (OTH) callers from PPCs who smoked daily (N=165). Data were collected in 2022-2023. INTERVENTION: Participants were randomized to received OTH treatment (coaching calls plus nicotine replacement therapy [NRT]) or OTH treatme
