OBJECTIVE: To summarise the evidence on effectiveness of non-pharmacological (ie, non-drug, non-surgical) interventions on work participation (sick leave, work status and presenteeism) in people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs).
METHODS: A systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and longitudinal observational studies (LOS) was performed. Qualitative (RCTs/LOS) and quantitative (RCTs) evidence syntheses were conducted. Mixed-effects restricted maximum likelihood models were used to combine effect estimates, using standardised mean differences (SMDs) as the su

BACKGROUND: Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the most common conditions presenting to eye care providers and is increasingly recognized to have poor outcomes on quality of life, activities of daily living, and social and emotional well-being. Here, we aim to understand the association between dry eye symptoms and workplace productivity experienced by patients with non-Sjögren's dry eye and Sjögren's Syndrome.
METHODS: MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Healthstar, and PsycINFO were searched from inception to May 2019.
RESULTS: Thirty-one studies consisting of 50,446 study part

Chronic, untreated hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with a poor clinical prognosis and a detrimental impact on patients' lives, including on work productivity. To estimate the value of productivity losses due to genotype 1 (GT1) HCV infection in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan and to estimate the potential productivity gains associated with treating patients with ledipasvir/sofosbuvir (LDV/SOF) therapy, an economic model was developed with a time horizon of 1 year. Hepatitis C virus patients entered the model at 12 weeks post-treatment, having achieved or not achiev

BACKGROUND: Chronic sleep disturbance is prevalent among United States employees and associated with costly productivity impairment. Mindfulness interventions improve sleep (ie, insomnia and daytime sleepiness) and productivity outcomes, and mobile apps provide scalable means of intervention delivery. However, few studies have examined the effects of mindfulness mobile apps on employees, and no research to date has tested the role of sleep improvement as a potential mechanism of action for productivity outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of Calm, a consumer-based mindfulness

This study aimed to investigate the degree of health-related productivity loss (HRPL) for common health conditions. A total of 4197 workers participated in a web-based questionnaire survey from January to February 2020. HRPL was measured using the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire, and a difference in HRPL was calculated for each common health condition. The burden of productivity loss due to each health condition was calculated by the product of the difference in HRPL scores and the percentage of participants who complained. The health conditions most strongly associated

Migraine is a leading cause of disability globally. Individuals with migraine experience reduced work productivity and greater health care costs compared with the general population. The Migraine Impact Model (MIM) is an interactive calculator developed to estimate the economic burden of migraine on United States-based employers. We demonstrate use of the model with 4 case studies from different industries (education, manufacturing, retail/trade, and entertainment). The MIM estimates migraine prevalence among employees and the employer's annual migraine-associated costs by applying published,

INTRODUCTION: Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) significantly contribute to the global disease burden, adversely affecting health, medical costs and economic productivity. The SMART-DAPPER project in western Kenya approached this challenge by deploying trained non-specialists to administer proven depression and PTSD treatments.
METHODS: Participants were public sector primary care outpatients at Kiumu County Hospital with major depression and/or PTSD. They were randomised to first-line treatment with interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) or fluoxetine. We evaluated three measur

Work-related rhinitis and laryngeal disorders are common and can significantly contribute to work absences and presenteeism. Each can cause respiratory symptoms that may be misdiagnosed as asthma symptoms, and each may occur as an isolated disorder or may also accompany asthma. Suspicion of these disorders and correct management require a careful medical and occupational history. Investigations for work-related rhinitis include examination of the nose, allergy skin tests, and in some cases, monitoring of peak inspiratory nasal flows at work and off work, or specific challenge tests. Healthcare personnel (HCP) are at occupational risk for acquisition of several vaccine-preventable diseases and transmission to patients. Vaccinations of HCP are justified to confer them immunity but also to protect susceptible patients and healthcare services from outbreaks, HCP absenteeism and presenteeism. Mandatory vaccination policies for HCP are increasingly adopted and achieve high and sustainable vaccination rates in short term. In this article we review the scientific evidence for HCP vaccination. We also address issues pertaining to vaccination policies for HCP and present the challe

Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects an increasing proportion of workers, a trend that will compound with the ageing of the workforce. It is therefore important to consider DM in the workplace context. There is an interrelationship between DM and work. Indeed dysglycemia is associated with a greater risk of work accidents and long-term DM complications. On the other side work conditions can affect DM's stability. The consequences are absenteeism, presenteeism, early retirement or even disability with significant socio-economic costs. To keep patients with DM into the workforce, the evaluation of the

Background and objective Keratoconus is a chronic, progressive corneal disease that occurs primarily in people of working age and significantly affects visual function. However, its broader impact on vision-related quality of life (VRQoL), work productivity, and functional capacity remains poorly investigated. The primary objective of this study was to assess the impact of keratoconus on VRQoL and work productivity. Secondary objectives included the evaluation of daily activity impairment and the investigation of associations between these outcomes and demographic, clinical, and economic facto

We have presenteed a late follow-up study of 8 eyes previously presented which were treated with scleral buckling procedures under hyperbaric oxygen conditions for repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments complicating sickle cell disease. In addition, we have presented a patient treated under similar conditions with a scleral shortening procedure and drainage of subretinal fluid for repair of a non-rhegmatogenous traction detachment secondary to diabetic retinopathy and sickle disease. We feel that our successful results in these cases and our lack of the usually reported complications mer
