Altered angular gyrus activation during the digit symbol substitution test in people living with HIV: beyond information processing speed deficits.

Speed-of-information processing (SIP) is often impaired in people living with HIV (PLWH), typically assessed through tests such as the digit symbol (DS) and symbol search, which also rely on motor and executive functions. This study aims to disentangle SIP deficits from other cognitive impairments in PLWH using an MRI-adapted digit symbol substitution test (mDSST). Fifty-seven PLWH (34.7 ± 11.2 years) and 50 age-matched people living without HIV (PLWoH, 31.8 ± 9.9 years) completed standardized neuropsychological tests and the mDSST. Behavioral performances and brain activations were compared,

A Pilot Study of Sleep, Work Practices, Visual Processing Speed, and 5-Year Motor Vehicle Crash Risk Among Truck Drivers.

The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the relationships between sleep, work practices, speed of processing, and 5-year motor vehicle crash risk among a group of older truck drivers. Anthropometric, demographic, and psychological data were recorded, along with health, sleep, and work histories from a sample of 23 truck drivers. Results from this pilot study suggest that physical fatigue may play a role in processing speed. Future studies should be designed with adequate power and include objective measures of sleep and repeated measures over time to determine 5-year MVC rates. Implicat

Influence of Moisture and Tool Temperature on the Maximum Stretch and Process Stability in High-Speed 3D Paper Forming.

This study investigates how moisture preconditioning and thermal parameters affect the stretchability of paper in 3D forming, with the goal of extending geometric forming limits and enhancing process stability. Multidimensional tensile tests were performed on FibreForm Duo (310 g/m2) using a hemispherical punch. Key variables included water bath dwell time, punch temperature, and contact time, simulating industrial conditions in high-speed packaging. A short duration of water bath immersion (1-3 s) led to rapid moisture uptake (-20%), resulting in significantly improved formability. Compared t

Dual STDP processes at Purkinje cells contribute to distinct improvements in accuracy and speed of saccadic eye movements.

Saccadic eye-movements play a crucial role in visuo-motor control by allowing rapid foveation onto new targets. However, the neural processes governing saccades adaptation are not fully understood. Saccades, due to the short-time of execution (20-100 ms) and the absence of sensory information for online feedback control, must be controlled in a ballistic manner. Incomplete measurements of the movement trajectory, such as the visual endpoint error, are supposedly used to form internal predictions about the movement kinematics resulting in predictive control. In order to characterize the synapti

Spatial attention triggered by eye gaze enhances and speeds up visual processing in upper and lower visual fields beyond early striate visual processing.

OBJECTIVE: The detection of a lateralized visual target is faster when preceded by a face gazing to the location of this stimulus. Here we aimed to clarify the time-course of the visual processing modulated by these reflexive shifts of attention. METHODS: ERPs were measured on 16 subjects performing a speeded location task on a circular checkerboard. The checkerboard target appeared either on the left or right of the upper or lower visual field, and was preceded by a central face orienting its gaze obliquely to one of the four possible corner locations for the target to appear. RESULTS: Cong

Beyond EDSS: Memory-guided saccades as candidate digital biomarkers of processing speed and fatigue in MS-A proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Disability monitoring in multiple sclerosis (MS) relies on EDSS and MRI lesion metrics that are often insensitive to cognitive dysfunction and fatigue. OBJECTIVE: To test whether memory-guided saccade (MGS) performance relates to processing speed and fatigue independent of mood symptoms, EDSS, and MRI inflammatory activity. METHODS: Forty-four MS patients completed MGS eye tracking. Error types and Total Task Error Rate were related to the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), fatigue impact, mood scales, EDSS, and MRI lesion measures (including 5-year new T2 lesions) using age- a

Distinct global brain connectivity alterations in depressed adolescents with subthreshold mania and the relationship with processing speed: Evidence from sBEAD Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a progressive condition. Investigating the neuroimaging mechanisms in depressed adolescents with subthreshold mania (SubMD) facilitates the early identification of BD. However, the global brain connectivity (GBC) patterns in SubMD patients, as well as the relationship with processing speed before the onset of full-blown BD, remain unclear. METHODS: The study involved 72 SubMD, 77 depressed adolescents without subthreshold mania (nSubMD), and 69 gender- and age-matched healthy adolescents (HCs). All patients underwent a clinical follow-up ranging from six t

Reduced P300 amplitude in children and adolescents with autism is associated with slowed processing speed, executive difficulties, and social-communication problems.

Selective attention to auditory input is reflected in the brain by an electric amplitude called the P3b amplitude, which is measured using electroencephalography. Previous research has shown that children and adolescents with autism have an attenuated P3b amplitude when they have to attend specific sounds while ignoring other sounds. However, it is unknown whether a reduced P3b amplitude in autistic children and adolescents is associated with their autism features, daily functioning and/or cognitive functions. This study aimed to examine these questions. Therefore, we assessed selective attent
