Psychological outcomes of depression after legally enforced quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Legally enforced quarantines during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increased psychological distress, particularly among individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions. In this study, part of the Cologne Corona Counselling and Support for Infected and Contact Persons During the Quarantine Period (CoCo-Fakt) project, we hypothesised that individuals with pre-existing depression experienced greater psychological distress during legally imposed quarantine/isolation and thus require additional support. We also aimed to explore whether coping mechanisms and resilience can enha

Cardiac changes in collegiate athletes following SARS-CoV-2 infection and quarantine: a prospective Case-Control study.

OBJECTIVE: Athletes are susceptible to acute respiratory tract infections, including SARS-CoV-2, which can affect cardiovascular function. We aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 infection and quarantine on cardiac function in male and female collegiate athletes. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, prospective, case-control study and performed transthoracic echocardiography in a diverse group of convalescent SARS-CoV-2-positive athletes following a 10-14-day quarantine, matched to non-SARS-CoV-2 athletes. Data collection occurred from August 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021. RESULTS: We evalu

A School-Based SARS-CoV-2 Testing Program: Testing Uptake and Quarantine Length After In-School Exposures.

OBJECTIVES: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-related quarantines, which are required after close contact with infected individuals, have substantially disrupted in-person education for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) students. In recent recommendations, shortened durations of quarantine are allowed if a negative SARS-CoV-2 test result is obtained at 5 to 7 days postexposure, but access to testing remains limited. We hypothesized that providing access to in-school SARS-CoV-2 testing postexposure would increase testing and reduce missed school days. METHODS: T

Distribution, Progression, and Associated Factors of Refractive Status of Children in Lhasa, Tibet, after COVID-19 Quarantine.

INTRODUCTION: Uncorrected refractive error is one of the major causes of visual impairment in children and adolescents worldwide. During the COVID-19 epidemic, home isolation is considered a boost to the progression of children's myopia. Under geographical conditions of high altitude and strong sunshine, the Tibetan plateau is the main residence of the Tibetan population, where little information is available about the refractive status and developmental trajectory. Therefore, this article aimed to evaluate the distribution, progression, and associated factors of the refractive status in secon

Managing outbreaks of invasive species--a new method to prioritize preemptive quarantine efforts across large geographic regions.

In pest risk assessment it is frequently necessary to make time-critical decisions regarding management of expanding pest populations. When an invasive pest outbreak is expanding rapidly, preemptive quarantine of areas that are under imminent threat of infestation is one of only a few available management tools that can be implemented quickly to help control the expansion. The preemptive quarantine of locations that surround an infested area also acts as a safeguard to counteract the risk of failed detections of the pest in field surveys. In this paper, we present a method that assesses the su

Large measles outbreak in Geneva, Switzerland, January to August 2011: descriptive epidemiology and demonstration of quarantine effectiveness.

Between January and August 2011, the canton of Geneva, Switzerland, experienced a large measles outbreak with 219 cases (47 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) in the context of an extensive epidemic in a neighbouring region of France. Most cases were young adults (median age: 18 years), often unaware of their vaccination status. The vast majority of cases were either not (81%) or incompletely vaccinated (8%). Thirty clusters with a total of 119 cases and a median cluster size of three (range: 2–15 cases) were identified. Overall, 44 cases were imported or linked to imported cases. Of 73 contacts o

Quarantine security of bananas at harvest maturity against Mediterranean and Oriental fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Hawaii.

Culled bananas (dwarf 'Brazilian', 'Grand Nain', 'Valery', and 'Williams') sampled from packing houses on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Oahu identified specific "faults" that were at risk from oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), infestation. Faults at risk included bunches with precociously ripened bananas, or bananas with tip rot, fused fingers, or damage that compromised skin integrity to permit fruit fly oviposition into fruit flesh. No Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), or melon fly, B. cucurbitae (Coquillett), infestations were found

Quarantine-associated viral pathogens in non-human primates: pathobiology, diagnostic surveillance, control strategies, and one health implications.

Recent outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases, along with advances in neurological and other biomedical research, have increased the use of non-human primates (NHPs) as preclinical models. Their close phylogenetic and physiological similarities to humans make them valuable for translational research, especially during public health emergencies. However, NHPs can harbor a wide range of viral pathogens, some of which pose zoonotic risks and may compromise animal health and experimental reproducibility. Therefore, quarantine procedures, pathogen surveillance, and biosecurity programs are essen

Understanding geographic and host range expansion of stored product insects to improve quarantine and pest management programs.

Many species of stored product insects have been spread by commerce, a few recently enough to have a written record. The bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller), and Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), have some of the most complete early records. The larger black flour beetle, Cynaeus angustus (LeConte) may have the most complete record of both geographic and host range expansion. The introduction of heated buildings and storage sites has allowed tropical species to establish in temperate climates. The adoption of c

Determination of the appropriate quarantine period following smallpox exposure: an objective approach using the incubation period distribution.

Determination of the most appropriate quarantine period for those exposed to smallpox is crucial to the construction of an effective preparedness program against a potential bioterrorist attack. This study reanalyzed data on the incubation period distribution of smallpox to allow the optimal quarantine period to be objectively calculated. In total, 131 cases of smallpox were examined; incubation periods were extracted from four different sets of historical data and only cases arising from exposure for a single day were considered. The mean (median and standard deviation (SD)) incubation period

A hundred years of importation: The first animal quarantine station in North America; Lévis, Québec, 1876-1982.

Quarantine, as a means of preventing disease importation, has been used for people and animals since the mid-19th century in Canada. The first animal quarantine facility in North America was established at Lévis, Québec in 1876. This quarantine station existed at Lévis until 1982 when it was closed and the function moved to Mirabel, Québec, near the International Airport. Veterinarians were in charge during the life of the Lévis Quarantine Station and some were also in charge of the Port of Quebec or a nearby District Office prior to the 1950's. In 1884 and 1886 the value of such a facility wa

Auto-photovoice: A reflexive extension of photovoice methodology and its practice in a COVID-quarantined community psychology course.

This article introduces "auto-photovoice," a novel self-reflexive extension of photovoice methodology where participant-researchers turn the camera on themselves to explore their personal experiences and observations of a phenomenon. In our exemplar project, students and faculty codesigned and implemented auto-photovoice methodology during a 10-week online community psychology graduate seminar during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine. Our photos addressed the prompt, "What inequities do we experience and witness in well-being related to COVID-19?" The initial analysis of weekly discussions of t
