Biochemical events in peritoneal tissue repair.

The increased incidence of postoperative adhesions and their complications have refocused attention on our understanding of adhesions, their clinical consequences and prevention. Postsurgical adhesions have four major negative impacts on health care outcomes. First, adhesions cause significant morbidity, including intestinal obstruction, infertility and pelvic pain. Second, adhesions are associated with multiple surgical complications. Third, these complications lead to greater surgical workload and utilization of hospital and other health care resources. Fourth, all these negative impacts res

Evaluation of N-Butyl Cyanoacrylate Tissue Adhesive for Second Intention Healing Following Dermatologic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Second intention healing is a frequent choice after dermatologic surgery, but prolonged wound care and daily dressings can pose practical challenges for patients. Tissue adhesives offer a low-maintenance alternative; however, their role in second intention healing remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of n-butyl cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive on second intention healing compared with the standard of care using petroleum-based dressings. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 47 patients with postoperative wounds of the hands, feet, or genital region aft

Blepharokeratoconjunctivitis Presumably Caused by Paederus fuscipes, a Beetle: A Case Report.

Toxicity of Paederus species to eyes has scarcely been reported. This report presents a case of chemical blepharokeratoconjunctivitis with delayed re-epithelialization caused by Paederus fuscipes in a patient with dry eye after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). A 47-year-old woman who had undergone LASIK for myopia 10 years prior experienced visual disturbance and pain in her left eye after being hit by a P. fuscipes insect in her eye 1 day prior to evaluation. At the initial presentation, dermatitis around the patient's left eye, eyelid oedema, conjunctival chemosis, corneal epit

Superiority of occipital donor sites for split-thickness skin grafting in dermatosurgery: Results of a prospective randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Split-thickness skin grafts are commonly used in dermatosurgery. For occipital donor sites, retrospective studies have shown good results with respect to graft take and healing rates. Nevertheless, the majority of grafts in dermatosurgery are harvested from the thigh. To date, there has been no prospective randomized controlled study comparing occipital versus femoral donor sites. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Following micrographically controlled R0 tumor resection, 108 patients were randomized prior to undergoing split-thickness skin grafting (donor site: occiput vs. thigh). Follow-up e

Hematological abnormalities and the use of granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor in patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

BACKGROUND: Derangements in blood cell counts have been described in patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) but are not well characterized. We aim to describe the relationship between our patients' hematological results and the evolution of disease and hypothesize on the possible roles of granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in the management of these conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical records of our patients with SJS and TEN from January 2005 to 2010 were analyzed. RESULTS: Anemia and lymphopenia were most commonly seen, while thr

Whole-Course-Repair Wound Dressing Based on Bovine Colostrum and Hyaluronic Acid for Diabetic Wound Repair Through Immunomodulation, Angiogenesis, and Re-Epithelization.

Excessive immune response, obstruction of angiogenesis, degradation of collagen deposition, and delayed re-epithelialization are the primary factors obstructing diabetic wound healing. Adequate and inclusive strategies are needed to address these challenges comprehensively. In this study, a whole-course-repair wound dressing (BC/HA) was simply fabricated to enhance diabetic wound closure. The BC/HA wound dressing, created by combining bovine colostrum (BC) with hyaluronic acid solution (HA), demonstrated good cytocompatibility, endothelial cell migration, angiogenesis, and antibiofilm effects.

A snail glycosaminoglycan-derived patch inspired by extracellular matrix accelerates diabetic wound healing via promoting re-epithelization.

Current clinical therapeutic protocols for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain inadequate due to their low response to therapeutic drugs and high recurrence rates. The normal healing process of diabetic wounds is frequently disrupted by factors such as microbial infections and elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. In this study, we developed a gel patch that can accelerate wound re epithelialization and scavenge ROS and antibacterial. To provide a dependable biological framework for wound tissue regeneration, this patch incorporates two components analogous to the extracellular matrix:

Activation of the SST-SSTR5 signaling pathway enhances corneal wound healing in diabetic mice.

Corneal wound healing in diabetic patients is usually delayed and accompanied by excessive inflammation. However, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we found that somatostatin (SST), an immunosuppressive peptide produced by corneal nerve fibers, was significantly reduced in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. In addition, we discovered that topical administration of exogenous SST significantly improved re-epithelialization and nerve regeneration following diabetic corneal epithelial abrasion. Further analysis showed that topical SST significantly

The spectrum of histopathologic findings in pemphigoid: Avoiding diagnostic pitfalls.

BACKGROUND: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune vesiculobullous dermatitis that primarily affects the elderly and presents with tense, fluid-filled blisters. The histological hallmark on routine hematoxylin & eosin (H&E)-stained specimens is a subepidermal blister with luminal eosinophils. However, there are histologic variants than can produce diagnostic confusion. METHODS: All immunofluorescence reports from an independent certified dermatopathology laboratory (2006-2015) were inspected, and those with findings consistent with an autoimmune subepidermal blistering process were selected

Insulin-like growth factor-1 promotes wound healing in estrogen-deprived mice: new insights into cutaneous IGF-1R/ERα cross talk.

Although it is understood that endogenous IGF-1 is involved in the wound repair process, the effects of exogenous IGF-1 administration on wound repair remain largely unclear. In addition, the signaling links between IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) and estrogen receptors (ERs), which have been elucidated in other systems, have yet to be explored in the context of skin repair. In this study, we show that locally administered IGF-1 promotes wound repair in an estrogen-deprived animal model, the ovariectomized (Ovx) mouse, principally by dampening the local inflammatory response and promoting re-epithelia

Bilayer PCL/GelMA microneedle patch codelivers deferoxamine and primed mesenchymal stem cell secretome for enhanced diabetic wound repair.

Chronic diabetic wounds remain refractory to healing due to persistent inflammation, impaired re-epithelialization, extracellular matrix dysregulation, and microvascular dysfunction. Here, we report a mechanically robust and biologically integrated microneedle (MN) platform composed of a poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) core and a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) coating, engineered for the localized compartmentalized co-delivery of deferoxamine (DFO) and mesenchymal stem cell-derived conditioned medium (CM). By leveraging a dual-reservoir architecture-incorporating fresh liquid CM within the GelMA shel

Follicular unit grafting in chronic ulcers: a valuable technique for integrated management.

Chronic ulcers significantly affect the quality of life of patients and impose a high cost on the healthcare system. The therapeutic management should be comprehensive, taking into consideration the etiological diagnosis of the wound and the characteristics of the wound bed when deciding on a therapeutic proposal appropriate to the healing phase, correcting factors that delay healing. During the epithelialization phase, repair techniques with grafts are recommended to shorten re-epithelialization time, improve the quality of scar tissue, and achieve adequate pain management. Currently, due to

Effective treatment of chronic radiation proctitis using radiofrequency ablation.

Endoscopic argon plasma coagulation and bipolar electrocautery are currently preferred treatments for chronic radiation proctitis, but ulcerations and strictures frequently occur. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been successful for mucosal ablation in the esophagus. Here we report the efficacy of RFA with the BarRx Halo(90) system in three patients with bleeding from chronic radiation proctitis. In all cases, the procedure was well tolerated and hemostasis was achieved after 1 or 2 RFA sessions. Re-epithelialization of squamous mucosa was observed over areas of prior hemorrhage. No stricturi

Therapeutic potential of microRNA-engineered exosomes in diabetic wound healing: a meta-analysis.

Diabetic wounds, a prevalent diabetes complication, pose significant challenges in treatment. MicroRNA-engineered exosomes (miR-exo) are a promising new treatment for diabetic wounds; however, their mechanism remains to be completely understood. Therefore, we aimed to conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of miR-exo treatment in the management of diabetic wounds. To achieve this aim, academic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, were searched for papers published before July 4, 2023. Outcome indicators (e.g., rate of wound healing, neovascul

Medicinal Plants as Efficacious Agents for Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Systematic Review of Clinical Studies.

A diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a chronic, nonhealing wound that occurs in approximately 15% to 25% of patients with diabetes, and amputation is necessary in approximately 5% to 24% of these patients. Medicinal plants have demonstrated promising wound healing activities in animal models of DFUs as well as in clinical studies. These plants, which are described as medicinal in different regions of the world, are not considered to be standard medicinal treatments in Western medicine at this time. Some medicinal products, such as bromelain-an herbal protease currently used for enzymatic debridement

Synthetic Hybrid-Scale Fiber Matrix in the Trauma and Acute Care Surgical Practice.

Complex cutaneous wounds resulting from disease and trauma can be difficult to heal and may require advanced treatment options. Split-thickness skin grafts (STSGs) and other biologic allogeneic and xenogeneic skin substitutes are limited in their ability to manage these lesions, and STSGs may also be limited in availability. A synthetic hybrid-scale fiber matrix, engineered with an architecture similar to native extracellular matrix, has been shown to have excellent durability and does not carry the risks of disease transmission or inflammatory response associated with biologic materials; it m
