Is Cannabis Effective in the Treatment of Chronic Back Pain?

Cannabis is commonly recognized as a recreational substance. It has been explored for its potential therapeutic applications in addressing various conditions, such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, neurological disorders, and chronic low back pain, which affect a significant portion of the population. In the United Kingdom, cannabis has been recognized and licensed for medical use since November 2018, with about 12 National Health Service prescriptions in circulation largely due to patient pressure, with support from media campaigns for its use when there was growing evidence of its use

Lack of Premeditation, Negative Urgency and Sensation Seeking Are Associated with Lifetime Use of Different Psychoactive Substances.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity, anxiety and depression are factors that have previously been associated with the use of various drugs of abuse that have been investigated in isolation. However, little is known about the influence of these variables on the number of different substances tried at least once over a lifetime (i.e. polysubstance use). OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess how facets of trait impulsivity, anxiety and depression pose as risk factors for lifetime polysubstance use. METHODS: Adult recreational drugs users (N = 700) completed an online survey, reporting each of the psychoactive sub

Assessment of restriction measures implemented during COVID pandemics on community lifestyle choices via wastewater-based epidemiology.

SARS-CoV-2 pandemic affected lifestyle habits, and the mental health and wellbeing of people around the world. In this manuscript, two towns (Paulton and Radstock) and two cities (Bath and Bristol) in Southwest England (> 1 million people) were monitored for two years using Wastewater-Based Epidemiology to assess impacts of COVID (including management measures such as lockdowns and movement restrictions) on community lifestyle choices: illicit drugs, legal stimulants, abused pharmaceuticals and pain pharma usage. Results were triangulated with key dates captured during the pandemic (national l

Using publicly available data to predict recreational cannabis legalization at the county-level: A machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial geographic variability in local cannabis policies within states that have legalized recreational cannabis. This study develops an interpretable machine learning model that uses county-level population demographics, sociopolitical factors, and estimates of substance use and mental illness prevalences to predict the legality of recreational cannabis sales within each U.S. county. METHODS: We merged data and selected 14 model inputs from the 2010 Census, 2012 County Presidential Data from the MIT Elections Lab, and Small Area Estimates from the National Surveys o

Ketamine-associated urinary tract dysfunction: an underrecognized clinical entity.

INTRODUCTION: The use of ketamine as a recreational drug is on the increase among young adults attending clubs and parties. Recreational ketamine users have anecdotally reported increased lower urinary tract symptoms while using the substance. METHODS: We describe the severe lower urinary tract symptoms experienced in 6 patients with chronic recreational ketamine use. We obtained a detailed history and physical examination along with further investigation to identify a relationship between recreational ketamine use and these symptoms. RESULTS: The urine cultures were sterile in all cases. In

Recreational Ketamine Use among Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder: Demographics, Motivations, and Polysubstance Use.

BACKGROUND: Data show that recreational ketamine use appears to be increasing. This study aimed to understand how ketamine fits into broader polysubstance use in individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). METHODS: Survey data were collected from a sample of treatment-seeking individuals with OUD in March 2022. RESULTS: Of 301 respondents, 28.6% reported lifetime ketamine use. Ketamine use was more frequently reported among males (61.9% vs. 37%; p < 0.001) and less frequently reported among individuals in rural locations (33.6% vs 15.7%; p < 0.002). Most respondents (70.9%) used ketamine to

Adolescent emotional disorder symptoms and transdiagnostic vulnerabilities as predictors of young adult substance use during the COVID-19 pandemic: mediation by substance-related coping behaviors.

The COVID-19 pandemic presents unique stressors (e.g. social isolation) that may increase substance use risk among young adults with a history of emotional disturbance. This study examined whether emotional disorder symptoms and transdiagnostic vulnerabilities during adolescence predicted young adult substance use during COVID-19, and whether using substances to cope with the pandemic's social conditions mediated these associations. Adolescents (N = 2,120) completed baseline surveys assessing transdiagnostic emotional vulnerabilities (anhedonia, distress intolerance, anxiety sensitivity, negat

Staying or moving: Results of a latent transition analysis examining intra-individual stability of recreational substance use among MSM in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study from 2004 to 2016.

BACKGROUND: Studies have examined patterns of substance use among Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), but few have examined factors predicting transitioning from one substance use pattern to another. We investigated transitioning from one substance use pattern to another over a 12-year period (2004-2016) among the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study participants. METHOD: Alcohol, marijuana, heroin, cocaine, poppers, uppers (e.g., methamphetamines) and erectile dysfunction(ED) medications use in the last 6 months from 3568 US MSM was dichotomized (no/yes) to classify participants into substance use cla

Phantom menace: novel psychoactive substances and the UK Armed Forces.

Novel psychoactive substances (NPS) encompass a large group of synthesised compounds specifically designed to mimic traditional recreational drugs. Current UK Armed Forces compulsory drug testing does not screen for these substances, making them tempting to the small proportion of UK Armed Forces personnel who indulge in recreational drug use. The acute and chronic sequelae of NPS misuse are widely variable and associated with high morbidity. In this paper, we discuss NPS pharmacology and clinical presentation. We describe toxidromes and management of patients who have misused NPS.Finally, we

Why Are Adolescent Cannabis Use Disorder Treatment Admissions Declining in the US? The Mediated Pathway of State Treatment Admissions Rates before and after Recreational Cannabis Legalization.

Purpose: State-level prevalence data are used to investigate whether recreational cannabis legalization moderates the mediated pathway from the perception of low risk of harm, to cannabis use, to cannabis use disorder (CUD) treatment admissions, among adolescents (age 12-17) in the US. Methods: Annual state prevalence measures of perception of low risk, cannabis use, and CUD treatment admissions between 2008 and 2019 (N = 542 state-year observations) were collected from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and the Treatment Episode Dataset - Admissions (TEDS-A). Baclofen overdose following recreational use in adolescents and young adults: A case report and review of the literature.

Over the past twenty years, psychotropic drug abuse by young people, especially by teenagers, has received special attention. Here, we present the case of baclofen overdose in a 16-year-old male who recreationally, and probably recurrently, self-administered baclofen. In addition, a review of other cases was conducted. The 16-year-old boy presented to emergency department with digestive signs followed by agitated confusion. Detection and determination of baclofen concentration were achieved using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Baclofen was detected in plasma and urine, at 420

Emergency department visits due to new psychoactive substances and other illicit drugs in Taiwan: preliminary results of the Taiwan Emergency Department Drug Abuse Surveillance (TEDAS) project.

INTRODUCTION: The use of new psychoactive substances (NPSs) has markedly increased worldwide; thus, it is important to monitor NPS-related effects. The Taiwan Emergency Department Drug Abuse Surveillance (TEDAS) project aims to assess the patterns of recreational drug use in patients presenting to emergency departments (EDs) across the country. Here, we report the preliminary results of this project. METHODS: This observational study included the collection and analysis of urine samples and assessment of the clinical presentation of patients from 79 EDs across Taiwan. Clinical features were r

The rising tide of drug-induced psychosis.

Recreational use of psychotogenic drugs has become more common in the last 30 years with consequent increase in drug-induced psychosis; 25-50% of such psychoses progress to schizophrenia within 5 years. Most cases result from abuse of methamphetamine or cannabis. The spread of methamphetamine psychosis has occurred without any liberalisation of laws; it is highly addictive and easy to make in small "kitchen" labs. The increase in cannabis use has been facilitated by a softening of attitudes towards the drug, and in some countries, especially in North America, by legalisation for so-called "med

Presentations due to acute toxicity of psychoactive substances in an urban emergency department in Switzerland: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Although the recreational use of psychoactive substances is common there is only limited systematic collection of data on acute drug toxicity or hospital presentations, in particular regarding novel psychoactive substances (NPS) that have emerged on the illicit market in the last years. METHODS: We included all cases presenting at the emergency department (ED) of the University Hospital of Basel, Switzerland, between October 2014 and September 2015 with acute toxicity due to self-reported recreational drug use or with symptoms/signs consistent with acute toxicity. Intoxications we

Journey through the K-hole: phenomenological aspects of ketamine use.

Although recreational use of the dissociative anaesthetic drug ketamine is currently increasing, little is known about the phenomenological aspects of its use. We therefore designed a structured interview to examine initiation experiences, positive and negative effects of ketamine use, and concerns about the drug and its long-term effects. Ninety participants (30 frequent users, 30 infrequent 'recreational' users and 30 ex-users who had abstained from use for at least 3 months) were interviewed and reported drug use was verified by hair sample analysis. The most appealing aspects of ketamine f

Young Adult Depression and Cannabis Use: Associations Before and After Recreational Legalization.

INTRODUCTION: The co-occurrence of depression with cannabis use worsens both mood and substance use disorder outcomes, with young adults particularly at risk of co-occurrence. This research investigates whether the association of state-level prevalence rates of young adult (age 18-25) depression and cannabis use in the U.S. changed following enactment of recreational (adult use) cannabis legalization between 2008 and 2019. METHODS: Annual, state prevalence data on past-year major depressive episode (hereafter, depression) and past-month cannabis use were extracted from the National Survey on

Acute skin and hair symptoms followed by severe, delayed eye complications in subjects using the synthetic opioid MT-45.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of unclassified new psychoactive substances (NPS) on the recreational drugs market through open online sale ('legal highs' or 'Internet drugs') continues unabated and represents a growing health hazard. The use of NPS has resulted in numerous, severe, adverse events and fatalities, due to unintended overdose or unknown toxic side-effects. OBJECTIVES: To try to find a possible common underlying cause for the skin-hair-eye symptoms complex observed in three men. METHODS: From late 2013 to mid-2014, three Swedish men aged 23-34 years with a history of recreational d
