Breaking down the fences among registries on autoinflammatory diseases: the E-Merge project.

BACKGROUND: Among the various numbers of different autoinflammatory diseases (AIDs), the absolute majority of them remains rare, with a single representative in large populations. This project, endorsed by PRES, supported by the EMERGE fellowship program, and performed in line with the Metadata registry for the ERN RITA (MeRITA), has the objective of performing a data synchronization attempt of the most relevant research questions regarding clinical features, diagnostic strategies, and optimal management of autoinflammatory diseases. RESULTS: An analysis of three large European registries: Eu

Sinonasal Mucosal Melanoma: A Population-based Comparison of the EUROCARE and SEER Registries.

Introduction  Sinonasal melanomas are rare tumors with no comparative survival studies between Europe and the US. Objective  To provide a population-based survival analysis between the two continents. Methods  The European Cancer Registry (EUROCARE) and the United States Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) databases were queried to identify patients diagnosed with sinonasal melanoma between 2000 and 2007. Relative survival (RS) data were grouped by age, gender, geographic region, extent of disease, and treatment modality. Results  A total of 1,294 cases were identified between 2

Rare lysosomal disease registries: lessons learned over three decades of real-world evidence.

Lysosomal storage disorders (LSD) are rare diseases, caused by inherited deficiencies of lysosomal enzymes/transporters, that affect 1 in 7000 to 1 in 8000 newborns. Individuals with LSDs face long diagnostic journeys during which debilitating and life-threatening events can occur. Clinical trials and classical descriptions of LSDs typically focus on common manifestations, which are not representative of the vast phenotypic heterogeneity encountered in real-world experience. Additionally, recognizing that there was a limited understanding of the natural history, disease progression, and real-w

Postapproval trials versus patient registries: comparability of advanced melanoma patients with brain metastases.

Postapproval trials and patient registries have their pros and cons in the generation of postapproval data. No direct comparison between clinical outcomes of these data sources currently exists for advanced melanoma patients. We aimed to investigate whether a patient registry can complement or even replace postapproval trials. Postapproval single-arm clinical trial data from the Medicines Evaluation Board and real-world data from the Dutch Melanoma Treatment Registry were used. The study population consisted of advanced melanoma patients with brain metastases treated with targeted therapies (B

An Evaluation of Dose-Related HPV Vaccine Effectiveness Using Central Registries in Michigan.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine effectiveness (VE) evaluations provide important information for vaccination programs. We established a linkage between statewide central registries in Michigan to estimate HPV VE against in situ and invasive cervical lesions (CIN3+). METHODS: We linked females in Michigan's immunization and cancer registries using birth records to establish a cohort of 773,193 women with known vaccination history, of whom 3,838 were diagnosed with CIN3+. Residential address histories from a stratified random sample were used to establish a subcohort of 1,374 wom

Time trends of chronic immune diseases by year of birth in Danish registries.

Chronic immune diseases are often reported to be on the rise and are speculated to share early life risk factors. Here, we investigated year of birth as a common denominator for time trends using the consistent data source of the Danish National Patient Registry with 35 years nationwide coverage. Observational nationwide birth cohort registry study, where persons born in Denmark since 1953 were investigated for chronic immune diseases per person years at risk. Outcomes were defined by inpatient hospitalizations in pre-chosen age bins by year of birth in 5 year bins. A population of 3.8 million

Congenital Malformations in Denmark: Considerations for the Use of Danish Health Care Registries.

BACKGROUND: Danish health registers are used widely to examine associations between specific risk factors and congenital malformations. Various overall prevalence rates of malformations have been reported in Denmark indicating differences in the underlying data sources or malformation definitions. We described trends in registration of malformations in Denmark 1997-2017 and identified potential caveats for the use of Danish health registries in epidemiological studies. We composed a Danish adaptation of EUROCATs definition of malformations. METHODS: Using nationwide Danish health registries,

Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair for Primary (Degenerative) Mitral Regurgitation: Registries and Trials.

The MitraClip is the only approved transcatheter edge-to-edge repair device that is commercially available for the treatment of severe, symptomatic, primary (degenerative) mitral regurgitation in patients deemed to be at prohibitive risk by a heart team. Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair can be safely performed with a low rate of periprocedural adverse events despite a predominantly elderly patient population with multiple comorbidities. Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair is associated with improvement in mitral regurgitation severity; left ventricular dimensions and remodeling; heart failure r

Diabetic patients with acute coronary syndromes in contemporary European registries: characteristics and outcomes.

AIMS: Among patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), those with diabetes mellitus (DM) are at particularly high risk of recurrent cardiovascular events and premature death. We aimed to provide a descriptive overview of unadjusted analyses of patient characteristics, ACS management, and outcomes up to 1 year after hospital admission for an ACS/index-ACS event, in patients with DM in contemporary registries in Europe. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 10 registries provided data in a systematic manner on ACS patients with DM (total n =28 899), and without DM (total n= 97 505). In the DM popu

Oral cancer in Libya and development of regional oral cancer registries: A review.

The aims of this paper are three-fold: (1) to summarize the current epidemiological data on oral cancer in Libya as reported in the published literature and as compared to other national oral cancer rates in the region; (2) to present both the history of the early development, and future goals, of population-based oral cancer tumor registries in Libya as they partner with the more established regional and international population-based cancer tumor registries; and, (3) to offer recommendations that will likely be required in the near future if these nascent, population-based Libyan oral cancer

Myositis registries and biorepositories: powerful tools to advance clinical, epidemiologic and pathogenic research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Clinical registries and biorepositories have proven extremely useful in many studies of diseases, especially rare diseases. Given their rarity and diversity, the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, or myositis syndromes, have benefited from individual researchers' collections of cohorts of patients. Major efforts are being made to establish large registries and biorepositories that will allow many additional studies to be performed that were not possible before. Here, we describe the registries developed by investigators and patient support groups that are currently availabl

Are cancer registries a viable tool for cancer survivor outreach? A feasibility study.

PURPOSE: Little is known about cancer survivors' receptivity to being contacted through cancer registries for research and health promotion efforts. We sought to (1) determine breast and colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors' responsiveness to a mailed survey using an academic medical center's cancer registry, (2) assess whether responsiveness varied according to sociodemographic characteristics and medical history, and (3) examine the prevalence and correlates of respondents' awareness and willingness to be contacted through the state cancer registry for future research studies. [Peptic ulcer in Denmark, 1981-1993. Analysis of data from national patient registries].

The aim of this study was to determine whether the improvements in the treatment of peptic ulcers are associated with decreasing age- and sex-specific hospitalization and death rates for peptic ulcers in Denmark. The study was based on all discharges as registered in the National Hospital Discharge Registry and all death certificates as registered in the Danish National Board of Health from 1981 through 1993. The age- and sex-specific and age-adjusted hospitalization and death rates were estimated. In women, the age-adjusted hospitalization increased for all types of peptic ulcers. In both sex

Second primary cancer after treatment for cervical cancer. An international cancer registries study.

BACKGROUND: The pattern of second cancers after treatment for cervical cancer provides important information on the risk of radiation-induced malignancies. Large numbers of women survive many years and can be studied for late effects. METHODS: Incident second cancers in 86,193 patients with cervical cancer reported to 13 population-based cancer registries in 5 countries were evaluated to estimate the risk of second cancer among very long term survivors. RESULTS: Overall, 7543 second cancers were observed versus 6015 cancers expected based on population rates (observed/expected = 1.2). Lung c

The Dutch cardiomyopathy registry (DCR); rationale and registry design.

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathies are important causes of arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, and heart failure. With accumulating knowledge in clinical, genetic, and molecular phenotyping, the number of distinct disease entities is growing. There is a need for broad, inclusive, high-quality prospective multi-center registries to better analyze these phenotypes, provide accurate risk stratification, and tailor therapies. The Dutch Cardiomyopathy Registry (DCR) will serve as a longitudinal registry for all cardiomyopathy patients, exploiting previously built local databases, allowing adequately power

The Iranian Newborn Multiples Registry (IRNMR): a registry protocol.

Purpose: Over the last decades, several twin/multiples registries have been developed worldwide, mostly concentrated in Europe and high-income countries (HICs). In Iran, we lack accurate nationwide epidemiological and biobank data on twins. We established the Iranian Newborn Multiples Registry (IRNMR) to evaluate the role of genetics and environmental factors in the variation of phenotypes among newborn monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs. IRNMR is a multicenter hospital-based registry. Materials and methods: In the pilot phase, we collected epidemiological data from multiples born
