Respiratory variability and associated cardiovascular changes in adults at rest.

Breathing patterns and associated circulatory fluctuations may reflect the action of various regulatory mechanisms as well as mechanical influences of breathing on the circulation. Thus, the study of such patterns can enhance our knowledge of these mechanisms, both in normal and pathological conditions. In this review, literature is evaluated that provides insight into the breath-to-breath variation of respiration in quietly breathing adults. Also when respiration is seemingly random, deterministic patterns in the respiratory variability can often be discerned. The various methods used in the

Diminution of schedule-induced polydipsia after a long rest period.

Schedule-induced polydipsia was established in four food-deprived rats given daily hourly sessions in which a food pellet was presented once each min. Sessions were then discontinued for approximately six months. After this rest period, the daily sessions were resumed. Relative to the water intake during the last five sessions prior to the rest period, water intake during the first five sessions after the rest period exhibited a 55.5%, 10.3%, 32.0% and 29.6% decrement for the four rats, respectively. These results are discussed in terms of a sensitization view of schedule-induced polydipsia.

Detrusor activity at rest in patients with idiopathic detrusor hyperreflexia.

The detrusor activity of the bladder at rest was investigated in the supine position for one hour following instillation of 100 cc of saline in 8 patients with idiopathic hyperreflexia. During the investigation, 5 patients showed bladder hyperreflexia. In 4 cases the activity was accompanied by an increase in the anal sphincter activity, while 1 case showed decreasing sphincteric activity prior to contractions. An analysis of the distribution of the contractions revealed a predominant frequency. The frequency and the amplitude of the detrusor contractions were independent of the bladder volume

O2-chemoreflex drive of ventilation in awake birds at rest.

Three varieties of birds (a non-flyer, the chicken; a diver, the duck; a flyer, the pigeon) were studied in resting conditions at neutral ambient temperature, while awake, either intact or sham operated, or after bilateral chronic carotid body denervation. Tidal volume (VT), ventilatory period (T) and minute volume (V = VT/T) measured plethysmographically, were recorded breath-by-breath in steady state at two levels of oxygenation, and in the course of transient pure O2 inhalation (60-sec O2-test). O2 partial pressures in the inspired and expired gases (PIO2 and PETO2), and in the arterial blo

Bridging personality, time poverty, and rest intolerance: a network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Rest intolerance-the inability to rest without experiencing negative emotions or cognitive distress-is an emerging psychological phenomenon. This study aimed to explore the complex interplay among personality traits, state anxiety, perceived time poverty, and rest intolerance. METHODS: Using a sample of 541 college students, we constructed a 13-node regularized partial correlation network at the dimension level, excluding one unreliable subscale. RESULTS: Results revealed that Neuroticism, Time Pressure, and Negative Feelings emerged as the central nodes within their respective

Expanding Cystic Fibrosis Registries to the Rest of the World.

CHALLENGE: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a global challenge. The epidemiological knowledge is incomplete and focused on patient registries in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Brazil, and South Africa. To complete the global picture of CF, we have to learn from each individual with CF, as well as each cohort and population. SOLUTION: Structured, harmonized, quality-controlled, and sustainable patient registries are needed worldwide to complete this picture and give every person with CF the opportunity to be part of it. REQUIREMENTS: Commitment, trust, transparency, and

Impact of Bowel Rest on Hospitalized Patients with Ulcerative Colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Bowel rest has traditionally been practiced for hospitalized patients with severe ulcerative colitis (UC). Most available evidence for bowel rest in UC originates from the prebiologic era. Therefore, this study evaluated the clinical impact of bowel rest in hospitalized patients with UC under modern therapy. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed at a single tertiary hospital, where a change in institutional policy for hospitalized UC patients replaced essential bowel rest with early oral feeding in October 2019. Hospitalized UC patients were classified according to the ti

From illness to rest: neural circuits linking sickness and sleep.

In a recent study, Darmohray et al. identified a brainstem pathway underlying sickness-induced sleep in mice. The authors demonstrated that immune-activated circuits in the nucleus of the solitary tract suppress wake-promoting norepinephrine signaling to promote nonrapid eye movement sleep. These findings help elucidate the neural mechanisms of sickness-induced sleep and provide new insights into sleep-immune interactions.

Sleep and Cytokines: A Bidirectional Dialogue Involving Rest and Immunity.

Sleep is a cardinal biological process that backstops central nervous system function, which also plays a crucial role in regulating systemic homeostasis, including immune activities. Cytokines, particularly interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α, act as mediators bridging sleep and inflammation, also influencing both sleep architecture and sleep-wake cycle. Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders such as insomnia, narcolepsy, hypersomnia, or obstructive sleep apnoea may disrupt cytokine production, alter their circadian rhythm of release, and shift secretion peaks from night to day. These c

Beyond the Grind: "Rest is Resistance" in Health Professions Education.

Rooted in spiritual energy and centered in Black liberation, Afrofuturism, and feminism, Hersey's "Rest is Resistance" framework encourages deliberate rest practices as a personal necessity and a form of political resistance. Inspired by her work, we are a group of health professions education scholars from minoritized backgrounds using our lived experiences to illustrate the application of our "Rest is Resistance" framework. The demands of academic medicine, defined by productivity in clinical, scholarly, and educational domains, combined with personal obligations, run counter to rest. Enduri

Transcription factors Lef1 and Rest stimulate recovery from depressive states.

The depressive state, a hallmark of major depressive disorder (MDD) and frequently observed alongside various neurological diseases, is often characterized by the dysregulation of multiple genes, reflecting a complex and multifaceted pathology underlying its symptoms. To gain deeper insights into the role of transcription factors (TFs) in mediating depressive states, we performed a detailed analysis of transcription factor activity profiles (TFAPs) in mouse brains, employing a TF-activity reporter battery that enables evaluation of transcriptional activities of multiple TFs and endogenous gene

A systematic review of flotation-restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST).

BACKGROUND: Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) is a therapeutic technique that involves immersing an individual in an environment with minimal sensory input or stimulation. The goal of REST is to induce a state of relaxation that is deeper than what can be achieved through other forms of relaxation techniques. Research suggests that REST can help reduce anxiety, alleviate chronic pain, improve sleep, and enhance creativity and cognitive function. Flotation-REST is a popular type of REST that utilizes an enclosed tank filled with buoyant saltwater to facilitate relaxation. This

Reduced dorsal fronto-striatal connectivity at rest in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious psychiatric illness that remains difficult to treat. Elucidating the neural mechanisms of AN is necessary to identify novel treatment targets and improve outcomes. A growing body of literature points to a role for dorsal fronto-striatal circuitry in the pathophysiology of AN, with increasing evidence of abnormal task-based fMRI activation within this network among patients with AN. Whether these abnormalities are present at rest and reflect fundamental differences in brain organization is unclear. METHODS: The current study combined resting-state

Rest the Brain to Learn New Gait Patterns after Stroke.

BACKGROUND: The ability to relearn a lost skill is critical to motor recovery after a stroke. Previous studies indicate that stroke typically affects the processes underlying motor control and execution but not the learning of those skills. However, these prior studies could have been confounded by the presence of significant motor impairments and/or have not focused on motor acuity tasks (i.e., tasks focusing on the quality of executed actions) that have direct functional relevance to rehabilitation. METHODS: Twenty-five participants (10 stroke; 15 controls) were recruited for this prospecti

Circadian Rest-Activity Rhythms, Delirium Risk, and Progression to Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Delirium is a complex neurocognitive syndrome suspected to be bidirectionally linked to dementia. Circadian rhythm disturbances likely contribute to dementia pathogenesis, but whether these disturbances are related to delirium risk and progression to all-cause dementia is unknown. METHODS: We analyzed continuous actigraphy data from 53,417 middle-aged or older UK Biobank participants during a median 5 years of follow-up. Four measures were used to characterize the 24-hour daily rest-activity rhythms (RARs): normalized amplitude, acrophase representing the peak activity time, interd

Circulating Ectonucleotidases Signal Impaired Myocardial Perfusion at Rest and Stress.

Background Ectonucleotidases maintain vascular homeostasis by metabolizing extracellular nucleotides, modulating inflammation and thrombosis, and potentially, myocardial flow through adenosine generation. Evidence implicates dysfunction or deficiency of ectonucleotidases CD39 or CD73 in human disease; the utility of measuring levels of circulating ectonucleotidases as plasma biomarkers of coronary artery dysfunction or disease has not been previously reported. Methods and Results A total of 529 individuals undergoing clinically indicated positron emission tomography stress testing between 2015
