Use of intranasal submucosal fillers as a transient implant to alter upper airway aerodynamics: implications for the assessment of empty nose syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is a debilitating condition associated with inferior turbinate tissue loss. Surgical augmentation of the inferior meatus has been proposed to treat ENS, although efficacy data with validated, disease-specific questionnaires is limited. Instead we evaluated submucosal injection of a transient, resorbable filler into the inferior meatus to favorably alter nasal aerodynamics in ENS patients. METHODS: Patients with a history of inferior turbinate reduction, diagnosed with ENS via Empty Nose Syndrome 6-Item Questionnaire (ENS6Q) and cotton testing, were enroll

Effects of ammonia inhalation and acetic acid pretreatment on colonization kinetics of toxigenic Pasteurella multocida within upper respiratory tracts of swine.

Pigs reared in intensive production systems are continuously exposed to ammonia released by the microbial degradation of their excrement. Exposure to this gas has been shown to increase the severity of the disease progressive atrophic rhinitis by facilitating colonization of the pig's upper respiratory tract by Pasteurella multocida. The etiological mechanism responsible for this synergy was investigated by studying the colonization kinetics of P. multocida enhanced by ammonia and comparing them with those evoked by an established disease model. Three-week-old Large White piglets were weaned a

A bacteriophage with dual host specificity for canine and porcine Bordetella bronchiseptica: Characterization and biofilm disruption potential.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a pathogen responsible for canine infectious tracheobronchitis (kennel cough) and porcine atrophic rhinitis, and it can cause respiratory infections in a variety of mammalian hosts. In recent years, the extensive use of antibiotics has resulted in increasingly severe antibiotic resistance, consequently driving significant interest in bacteriophages as a potential alternative to antibiotics. In this study, bacteriophage PBb001 isolated from swine farm wastewater in Yantai, Shandong, exhibited lytic activity against Bordetella bronchiseptica, including strains derive

Immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a multi-epitope recombinant toxin antigen of Pasteurella multocida against virulent challenge in mice.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) infection frequently results in porcine atrophic rhinitis and swine plague, leading to large economic losses for the swine industry worldwide. P. multocida toxin (PMT, 146 kDa) is a highly virulent key virulence factor that plays a vital role in causing lung and turbinate lesions. This study developed a multi-epitope recombinant antigen of PMT (rPMT) that showed excellent immunogenicity and protection in a mouse model. Using bioinformatics to analyse the dominant epitopes of PMT, we constructed and synthesized rPMT containing 10 B-cell epitopes, 8 peptides

Histopathological Findings in an Unclassifiable Case of Empty Nose Syndrome with Long-term Follow-up.

One of the major components of the functional process in the nasal cavity is taken up by the respiratory epithelium covering the posterior two-thirds of the nasal cavity. Disruption in the cytoarchitectonics and subcellular changes in this epithelium results in a number of functional changes in the nasal cavity. One of the rare and usually iatrogenic disturbances of this type is described in 1996, although noticed and discussed significantly earlier, by Kern and Stenkvist empty nose syndrome (ENS) or secondary atrophic rhinitis. The clinical hallmarks of ENS are described as paradoxical feelin

Ultrasonic bone aspirator turbinoplasty: a novel approach for management of inferior turbinate hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVE: Turbinate reduction via microdebrider assisted turbinoplasty (MAIT) or radiofrequency assisted (RFA) turbinoplasty fails to address nasal obstruction caused by bony deformities of the inferior turbinate. Procedures such as Mabry's turbinoplasty, although effective, are challenging to perform. Other procedures such as partial or total turbinectomies may result in prolonged crusting and atrophic rhinitis. We demonstrate the safety and efficacy of inferior turbinate bone removal with an ultrasonic bone aspirator. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective Review and Prospective Case Series with Pati

Foundations and advances in recombinant, subunit, and conjugate vaccine development against Pasteurella multocida: A review of the 2015-2025 decade.

Pasteurella multocida is a major veterinary pathogen causing severe diseases such as fowl cholera, hemorrhagic septicemia, and atrophic rhinitis, leading to substantial global losses in livestock production. Conventional bacterins and live-attenuated vaccines remain limited by serotype specificity, variable safety, and short-lived immunity, prompting the need for molecularly defined alternatives. Genomic and proteomic analyses have driven the identification of conserved outer membrane proteins (OMPs), including PlpE, OmpH, OmpA, Omp87, and VacJ as leading antigen candidates capable of elicitin

Surgical management of maxillary sinonasal inverted papilloma.

OBJECTIVE: The extent of the surgery required when sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) originates in the maxillary sinus is still the subject of debate. The principal aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of exclusive endoscopic removal or when combined with a limited vestibular anterior antrostomy of the maxillary IP. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out of 64 patients with IP treated in our university tertiary referral center from 1993-2007. Endoscopic removal of the IP was done for all patients, either exclusively or combined with an open approach. All patients were foll

Activation of Galpha (i) and subsequent uncoupling of receptor-Galpha(i) signaling by Pasteurella multocida toxin.

Bacterial protein toxins are powerful tools for elucidating signaling mechanisms in eukaryotic cells. A number of bacterial protein toxins, e.g. cholera toxin, pertussis toxin (PTx), or Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT), target heterotrimeric G proteins and have been used to stimulate or block specific signaling pathways or to demonstrate the contribution of their target proteins in cellular effects. PMT is a major virulence factor of P. multocida causing pasteurellosis in man and animals and is responsible for atrophic rhinitis in pigs. PMT modulates various signaling pathways, including phos

Effective methods for the production of immunoglobulin Y using immunogens of Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae.

Swine respiratory diseases induce severe economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. Several methods have been developed and applied to control these diseases. However, there are still problems of disease control in the swine industry. Recently, egg yolk antibodies have been found to offer several advantages for disease control in animals and humans. In a previous study (24), antibodies to several causative pathogens of swine respiratory diseases were developed. However, several problems remained, especially in terms of reduced laying rates. Therefore, experimental vaccines were reformula

Pathogenicity and Genomic Characterization of Pasteurella multocida Serogroup F Isolate AH01 From Porcine Pneumonia in China.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), a significant animal pathogen, causes swine pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis, primarily associated with serogroups A, D, and F. Although serogroups A and D are prevalent in pigs and well-established causes of these diseases, the pathogenicity and genomic characteristics of porcine serogroup F remain poorly characterized. Here, we isolated a virulent P. multocida strain-AH01, from pigs with fatal acute respiratory disease in Anhui, China. It was characterized as a capsular Type F, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigen Type L3 isolate of sequence type (ST) 9. To e
