The immune factors involved in the rapid clearance of bacteria from the midgut of the tick Ixodes ricinus.

Ticks are obligate hematophagous arthropods that transmit a wide range of pathogens to humans as well as wild and domestic animals. They also harbor a non-pathogenic microbiota, although our previous study has shown that the diverse bacterial microbiome in the midgut of Ixodes ricinus is quantitatively poor and lacks a core. In artificial infections by capillary feeding of ticks with two model bacteria (Gram-positive Micrococcus luteus and Gram-negative Pantoea sp.), rapid clearance of these microbes from the midgut was observed, indicating the presence of active immune mechanisms in this orga

Predicting the distribution of Ixodes ricinus in Europe: integrating microclimatic factors into ecological niche models.

Ixodes ricinus, commonly known as the castor bean tick and sheep tick, is a significant vector of various diseases, such as tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis. Owing to climate change, the distribution and activity of I. ricinus are expected to increase, leading to an increase in the number of diseases transmitted by this species. Most distribution models and ecological niche models utilize macroclimate datasets such as WorldClim or CHELSA to map the distribution of disease-transmitting ticks. However, microclimatic factors are crucial for the activity and survival of small arthropod

Humans infested with Ixodes ricinus are exposed to a diverse array of tick-borne pathogens in Serbia.

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) pose a major threat to human health in Europe and the whole northern hemisphere. Despite a high prevalence of TBPs in Ixodes ricinus ticks, knowledge on the incidence of tick-borne diseases in humans infested by this tick species is limited. This study was conducted in the year 2019 on patients who presented themselves to the Pasteur Institute Novi Sad with tick infestations. Ticks (n = 31) feeding on human (n = 30) and blood samples from the same individuals were collected by physicians and a microfluidic real-time high-throughput PCR system was used to test the ge

Climate change influences on the potential geographic distribution of the disease vector tick Ixodes ricinus.

BACKGROUND: Ixodes ricinus is a species of hard tick that transmits several important diseases in Europe and North Africa, including Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis. Climate change is affecting the geographic distributions and abundances of arthropod vectors, which in turn influence the geographic distribution and epidemiology of associated vector-borne diseases. To date, few studies have investigated effects of climate change on the spatial distribution of I. ricinus at continental extents. Here, we assessed the potential distribution of I. ricinus under current and future climat

Occurrence of Francisella spp. in Dermacentor reticulatus and Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in eastern Poland.

A total of 530 questing Dermacentor reticulatus ticks and 861 questing Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected from Lublin province (eastern Poland) and examined for the presence of Francisella by PCR for 16S rRNA (rrs) and tul4 genes. Only one female D. reticulatus tick out of 530 examined (0.2%) was infected with Francisella tularensis subspecies holarctica, as determined by PCR of the rrs gene. None of 861 I. ricinus ticks were infected with F. tularensis. In contrast, the presence of Francisella-like endosymbionts (FLEs) was detected in more than half of the D. reticulatus ticks (50.4%) and 0.

The paradox of the binomial Ixodes ricinus activity and the observed unimodal Lyme borreliosis season in Hungary.

The change of ambient temperature plays a key role in determining the run of the annual Lyme season. Our aim was to explain the apparent contradiction between the annual unimodal Lyme borreliosis incidence and the bimodal Ixodes ricinus tick activity run--both observed in Hungary--by distinguishing the temperature-dependent seasonal human and tick activity, the temperature-independent factors, and the multiplicative effect of human outdoor activity in summer holiday, using data from Hungary in the period of 1998-2012. This separation was verified by modeling the Lyme incidence based on the sep

Infections and coinfections of questing Ixodes ricinus ticks by emerging zoonotic pathogens in Western Switzerland.

In Europe, Ixodes ricinus is the vector of many pathogens of medical and veterinary relevance, among them Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and tick-borne encephalitis virus, which have been the subject of numerous investigations. Less is known about the occurrence of emerging tick-borne pathogens like Rickettsia spp., Babesia spp., "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis," and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in questing ticks. In this study, questing nymph and adult I. ricinus ticks were collected at 11 sites located in Western Switzerland. A total of 1,476 ticks were analyzed individually for the simult

Ixodes ricinus is not an epidemiologically relevant vector of Bartonella species in the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus).

Bartonella are hemoparasites exploiting a range of mammals as reservoir hosts. Several species are zoonotic pathogens. Fleas, lice, and other arthropods, such as ticks, have been implicated as vectors. While the competence of ticks as vectors of Bartonella species has recently been demonstrated, the epidemiological significance of ticks as vectors of Bartonella species in wildlife populations remains unknown. We used the presence of deer at study sites to control the presence of Ixodes ricinus ticks, and used this system to determine whether I. ricinus contributes to the epidemiology of Barton

Biometrical analysis of the common tick, Ixodes ricinus, in the Sleza Massif (Lower Silesia, Poland).

The aim of this study was to biometrically analyze the behavioral activity of Ixodes ricinus ticks as influenced by season and trend in numbers, based on material collected during three years in the Sleza Landscape Park within the Sleza Massif (Lower Silesia, Poland) using a time series decomposition method. The effects of the abiotic factors of air temperature and humidity on this activity were also determined. A total of 2,745 nymphs and adults of I. ricinus was observed and collected from 2001 through 2003. It was the only collected species from the 17 representatives of the family Ixodidae

The prevalence of piroplasms in a population of Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae) from north-western Poland.

Developmental forms of Babesia spp. were studied in isolated salivary glands of Ixodes ricinus, subjected to the Feulgen reaction. The same ticks were also hosts to Babesia microti, which was determined by PCR amplification with primers specific to the fragment of a gene encoding the nuclear small sub-unit ribosomal RNA (SS-rDNA). Presence of Babesia spp. was recorded in the salivary glands of 59.9% of ticks collected, both in nymphs and adults. PCR reactions specific to Babesia microti were positive in 1.9% of nymphs.

[The age-related structure of an Ixodes ricinus population studied by using a rapid anatomical method].

A rapid anatomic method for the assessment of the physiologic age of ticks and their virtual age was used in studies of the age structure of a natural population of I. ricinus in the Moscow region. The anatomic method was found quite fit for the purpose. The findings evidence that the age structure of I. ricinus (active imago) population is heterogeneous with variously directed seasonal fluctuations. In spring the structure is the youngest (up to 60% of imagoes are in the second age, 8 months) and in the fall the females are mainly old, just starting to get younger (up to 90% are in the third

[Hibernal parasitism by Ixodes ricinus (L., 1758) of Felis catus domesticus in an urbanized area].

In the first months of 1977 some adults of Ixodes ricinus (L., 1758) have been found on Felis catus domesticus in a newly urbanized area near Rieti (Lazio, Central Italy) which had been previously used as a grazing-ground for sheep. This finding, quite exceptional according to the literature, is explained in the following way: 1) the cat had not been recorded until now as an habitual host of any Ixodid species, but many species of this superfamily can infest the cat in absence of their habitual hosts; 2) in a continental temperature climate, in peculiar microhabitats and in presence of hosts,

Surveillance of tick-borne encephalitis virus and Tribeč Virus in Ixodes ricinus ticks from Slovakia.

Tick-borne viruses represent a significant and growing public health concern in Europe. This study investigated the minimum infection rates (MIRs) of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and Tribeč virus (TRBV) in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in Slovakia during 2016-2017 and 2023-2024. A total of 3,686 ticks (3,262 nymphs in 359 pools and 424 adults in 99 pools) from 13 sampling sites were screened for viral RNA. The overall MIRs were 0.38% for TBEV and 0.22% for TRBV. All positive detections occurred in nymphal pools. TBEV was detected at 8 of 13 sampling sites, with local prevalence rangin

Prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in feeding and questing Ixodes ricinus ticks from Southern Sweden.

Ixodes ricinus, the most common tick species in Northern Europe, plays a significant role as a vector of several pathogens, with its geographical distribution expanding in recent years. In Southern Sweden, particularly in Region Skåne County (referred to as Skåne), the favorable climate and landscape conditions support extensive proliferation of I. ricinus. Despite Lyme borreliosis being common in this region and few annual cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) being reported, data on the circulation of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) remain limited. This study molecularly investigated the presen

First detection of tick-borne encephalitis virus in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Belgium, May 2024.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the most frequent tick-borne viral disease transmitted by ticks in Europe and Asia. In Belgium, autochthonous cases of TBE have been reported, but even though some tick collection was carried out in the past, no TBEV-positive ticks have been found thus far. In this study, questing ticks were collected by flagging at the precise location where a patient was reported to have been bitten by a tick before developing TBE in Belgium in 2020. In total, 350 ticks were pooled by life stage (nymphs, adult females, adult males) and collection date, lysed, and RNA extracte

Molecular Detection and Characterization of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Ixodes ricinus Ticks Collected from Humans.

Ticks carry numerous pathogens that, if transmitted, can cause disease in humans and animals. Research on pathogens transmitted from ticks to humans is essential for improving public health strategies against tick-borne diseases (TBDs). In this study, Ixodes ricinus ticks found on humans were collected and examined between 2019 and 2024. This study is about the molecular characteristics of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in the region of northern Serbia, including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Coxiella burnetii. We identified B. burgdorferi s.l. as the most

Questing Ixodes ricinus ticks and Borrelia spp. in urban green space across Europe: A review.

For more than three decades, it has been recognized that Ixodes ricinus ticks occur in urban green space in Europe and that they harbour multiple pathogens linked to both human and animal diseases. Urban green space use for health and well-being, climate mitigation or biodiversity goals is promoted, often without consideration for the potential impact on tick encounters or tick-borne disease outcomes. This review synthesizes the results of over 100 publications on questing I. ricinus and Borrelia spp. infections in ticks in urban green space in 24 European countries. It presents data on severa
