A Personalized Multimodal BCI-Soft Robotics System for Rehabilitating Upper Limb Function in Chronic Stroke Patients.

Multimodal brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that combine electrical features from electroencephalography (EEG) and hemodynamic features from functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) have the potential to improve performance. In this paper, we propose a multimodal EEG- and fNIRS-based BCI system with soft robotic (BCI-SR) components for personalized stroke rehabilitation. We propose a novel method of personalizing rehabilitation by aligning each patient's specific abilities with the treatment options available. We collected 160 single trials of motor imagery using the multimodal BCI from 1

Multi-Objective Optimization-Based Assist-as-Needed Controller for Improved Quality of Assistance in Rehabilitation Robotics.

Assist-as-needed (AAN) is a paradigm in rehabilitation robotics based on the fact that more active participation from human users promotes faster recovery of motor functions. Moreover, the patients and public engaged and involved in our research design stressed that in order to provide safe and patient-friendly assistance, rehabilitation robotics should be equipped with different constraints while giving minimal assistance where required. Most of the current constraint-based AAN methods are only capable of providing position or velocity constraints which limit the quality of assistance that th

Untethered Soft Robotics with Fully Integrated Wireless Sensing and Actuating Systems for Somatosensory and Respiratory Functions.

There has been a great deal of interest in designing soft robots that can mimic a human system with haptic and proprioceptive functions. There is now a strong demand for soft robots that can sense their surroundings and functions in harsh environments. This is because the wireless sensing and actuating capabilities of these soft robots are very important for monitoring explosive gases in disaster areas and for moving through contaminated environments. To develop these wireless systems, complex electronic circuits must be integrated with various sensors and actuators. However, the conventional

Public information-seeking about orthopedic surgical robotics: a decade-scale infodemiological analysis and forecast through 2030.

Public information-seeking is an underused indicator of the diffusion of robotic-assisted surgery, yet no study has compared it jointly across the three highest-volume orthopedic domains or projected it toward the coming decade. Using Google Trends relative search volume (RSV: a term's share of all searches in a given month, rescaled 0-100 against the highest month of the study window, and not a count of searches) retrieved programmatically (Health category, worldwide, January 2014-June 2026; 150 monthly observations per term), we quantified and forecast public search interest in robotic knee,

Innovation, Adaptation, and Human Dignity in Assistive Robotics in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Rehabilitation Medicine Perspective.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive motor neuron disease that heavily impacts a person's ability to perform activities of daily living, affecting mobility, function, and communication drastically. These complications present a daunting obstacle for familial support systems and physicians to manage. Although survival prognosis in ALS patients has moderately improved with the advent of ALS specialty clinics, this illness persists as a grim diagnosis with no current cure or hope for recovery, simply an inescapable decline. However, assistive robotics provides a promising

Non-genetic neuromodulation with graphene optoelectronic actuators for disease models, stem cell maturation, and biohybrid robotics.

Light can serve as a tunable trigger for neurobioengineering technologies, enabling probing, control, and enhancement of brain function with unmatched spatiotemporal precision. Yet, these technologies often require genetic or structural alterations of neurons, disrupting their natural activity. Here, we introduce the Graphene-Mediated Optical Stimulation (GraMOS) platform, which leverages graphene's optoelectronic properties and its ability to efficiently convert light into electricity. Using GraMOS in longitudinal studies, we found that repeated optical stimulation enhances the maturation of

Multi-Scale Robotics: A Numerical Investigation on Mobile Micro-Tweezers for Micro-Manipulation with Extreme Requirements.

An automated micro-tweezers system with a flexible workspace would benefit the intelligent sorting of live cells. Such micro-tweezers could employ a forced vortex strong enough to capture a single cell. Furthermore, addressable control of the position to the vortex would constitute a robotic system. In this study, a spherical micro-object composed of super paramagnetic particles tightly packed in a non-magnetic resin is rotated with a combined magnetic field of permanent magnets. The said magnetic field is articulated by an open-kinematic chain controlled with a simple adaptive PI-control sche

Robotics in Simulated COVID-19 Patient Room for Health Care Worker Effector Tasks: Preliminary, Feasibility Experiments.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has strained health care systems and personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies globally. We hypothesized that a collaborative robot system could perform health care worker effector tasks inside a simulated intensive care unit (ICU) patient room, which could theoretically reduce both PPE use and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) exposures. We planned a prospective proof-of-concept feasibility and design pilot study to test 5 discrete medical tasks in a simulated ICU room of a COVID-19 patient using a collaborative ro

Recovery of reward function in problematic substance users using a combination of robotics, electrophysiology, and TMS.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical and empirical work suggest that addictive drugs potentiate dopaminergic reinforcement learning signals and disrupt the reward function of its neural targets, including the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) and the basal ganglia. Here, we aim to use prefrontal 10-Hz TMS to enhance aMCC reward activity and reward learning by the basal ganglia in problematic substance users. METHODS: 22 problematic substance users were randomized into an Active and SHAM (coil flipped) TMS group. We recorded the reward positivity-an electrophysiological signal believed to index sensitivi
