The impact of ethnic self-identity on post-migration social integration of young rural to urban migrants in China: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Post-migration social integration is a pressing concern for young ethnic-minority migrants in urban China. This study examines how ethnic self-identity shapes this integration process from the migrant's own lived perspectives. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, we regard young migrants as subjects of meaning-making rather than objects to be measured. Ecological systems theory, social identity theory, and social cognitive models provide the analytical frameworks for understanding how ethnic identity is negotiated within destination-city contexts. METHODS: We conduct

When "Integration" fails to address loneliness: interventional challenges of parent-led organizations for autistic children's social/emotional loneliness and health equity in China.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a key driver of health inequities faced by autistic children. However, research on how parent-led organizations align their goals to address loneliness remains scarce. METHODS: Between 2021 and 2024, a qualitative study was conducted in three Chinese cities, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 37 stakeholders and participatory observations. RESULTS: Parent-led organizational interventions exhibited three interrelated goals: shifting from individual family-based strategies (exemplified by but not limited to 'having a second child for companionship') to collecti

Depressive symptoms and lack of social integration in relation to prognosis of CHD in middle-aged women. The Stockholm Female Coronary Risk Study.

AIMS: Several studies have reported that women with coronary heart disease have a poorer prognosis than men. Psychosocial factors, including social isolation and depressive symptoms have been suggested as a possible cause. However, little is known about these factors and their independent predictive value in women. Therefore, we investigated the prognostic impact of depression, lack of social integration and their interaction in the Stockholm Female Coronary Risk Study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two hundred and ninety-two women patients aged 30 to 65 years and admitted for an acute coronary event

To see ourselves as others see us: an experimental integration of the intra and interpersonal consequences of self-protection in social anxiety disorder.

The current study investigated the mechanism through which safety behaviors perpetuate perceived and actual negative social outcomes hypothesized to maintain social anxiety disorder (SAD). Eighty individuals diagnosed with generalized SAD took part in a "getting acquainted" conversation with a trained experimental confederate. Participants were then randomly assigned to either a safety behavior reduction plus exposure condition (SB + EXP) or a graduated exposure (EXP) control condition and completed a 2nd conversation with the same interaction partner. Mediation analyses revealed that particip

Personalised prevention and management of kidney stones: a narrative review on the importance of integrating environmental, social and genetic factors.

Kidney stone disease (KSD) is a prevalent, multifactorial, and common disorder influenced by environmental and genetic factors, with increasing global incidence and high recurrence rates. Despite advances, understanding the interplay between urinary biochemistry, lifestyle, climate, and genetic predispositions remains essential for effective management. In this review, we evaluate current concepts on KSD pathophysiology, epidemiology, stone composition, and formation mechanisms, alongside recent diagnostic and therapeutic developments. We emphasize integrating genetic, environmental, and clini

Predicting asthma prevalence across US communities by integrating social vulnerability and environmental risk with machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, disproportionately affecting racial and ethnic minority populations and low-income communities. Although both social and environmental factors are known contributors to asthma prevalence, the extent to which they interact to shape geographic disparities remains insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how these factors vary across regions with differing asthma prevalence and thereby identify patterns that may inform targeted public health responses. METHODS: We used the US Centers f

Professional socialization as a complex adaptive process: a systematic scoping review and integrative theory of professional identity formation.

BACKGROUND: Professional socialization is central to professional identity formation (PIF), shaping how physicians think, act, and feel within their roles. Despite sustained scholarly attention and curricular innovation, there remains limited understanding of how professional socialization actually operates, or why individuals exposed to similar training environments develop markedly different professional identities. METHODS: To examine this, we conducted a systematic scoping review using an AI-supplemented modified Systematic Evidence-Based Approach (mSEBA) to examine current theories of pr

A community screening tool for neuropsychiatric symptoms in the elderly: integrating cortisol, microbiome, and social factors with machine learning.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are early indicators of cognitive decline due to neurodegenerative diseases, and their timely detection is of the utmost importance. We aimed to develop and validate methods for large-scale NPS screening among elderly individuals and explore underlying metabolic mechanisms. This observational, cross-section study involved 138 and 200 participants in the modeling and external validation cohorts, respectively, chosen from community healthcare centers in Chongqing, China. Data collection involved demographic questionnaires, saliva samples for oral microbiome analys

Motivational characteristics of recreational drug use among emerging adults in social settings: an integrative literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Recreational drug use by emerging adults has been identified as an increasingly normalized trend in social contexts. It has been documented that the consumption of these substances regularly occurs at music festivals, raves, nightlife and party settings. While it is known that emerging adults participate in these risk-taking behaviors, what is not known is their motivational characteristics for use. The aim of this review to identify and review literature describing the motivations for recreational drug use and drug choice (excluding alcohol, cannabis and tobacco) by emerging adu

An integrated review of social information processing as a mechanism in the association between maltreatment and depression among youth of color.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a potent risk factor for depression across the life course, with maltreatment and depression demonstrated to disproportionately impact youth of color. Despite evidence for mechanisms (e.g., social information processing; SIP) accounting for the effects of maltreatment on youth broadly, pathways of risk for depression among maltreated youth of color specifically remain largely under-investigated. OBJECTIVE: In an effort to address this gap in the literature, the present review synthesizes available research regarding SIP as a mechanism underlying the impact of

Integrated Social-Behavioral and Ecological Risk Maps to Prioritize Local Public Health Responses to Lyme Disease.

BACKGROUND: The risk of contracting Lyme disease (LD) can vary spatially because of spatial heterogeneity in risk factors such as social-behavior and exposure to ecological risk factors. Integrating these risk factors to inform decision-making should therefore increase the effectiveness of mitigation interventions. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to develop an integrated social-behavioral and ecological risk-mapping approach to identify priority areas for LD interventions. METHODS: The study was conducted in the Montérégie region of Southern Quebec, Canada, where LD is a newly en

The use of social network analysis to examine the transmission of Salmonella spp. within a vertically integrated broiler enterprise.

To better understand factors influencing infectious agent dispersal within a livestock population information is needed on the nature and frequency of contacts between farm enterprises. This study uses social network analysis to describe the contact network within a vertically integrated broiler poultry enterprise to identify the potential horizontal and vertical transmission pathways for Salmonella spp. Nodes (farms, sheds, production facilities) were identified and the daily movement of commodities (eggs, birds, feed, litter) and people between nodes were extracted from routinely kept farm r

Preliminary Investigation of a Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Social Anxiety Disorder That Integrates Compassion Meditation and Mindful Exposure.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the feasibility and initial efficacy of a 12-week group mindfulness-based intervention tailored for persons with social anxiety disorder (MBI-SAD). The intervention includes elements of the standard mindfulness-based stress reduction program, explicit training in self-compassion aimed at cultivating a more accepting and kinder stance toward oneself, and use of exposure procedures to help participants practice responding mindfully to internal experiences evoked by feared social situations. METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to the MBI-SAD (n = 21) or

The bivalent fear of evaluation model of social anxiety: further integrating findings on fears of positive and negative evaluation.

Accumulating evidence supports the premise that fear of evaluation in general is important in social anxiety, including fear of positive evaluation (FPE) as well as fear of negative evaluation (FNE). This study tested various hypotheses pertaining to a novel, expanded conceptualization of social anxiety involving these two distinct fears: the bivalent fear of evaluation (BFOE) model. Responses from a large undergraduate sample (N = 585) were examined. In addition, responses from a subsample of participants qualifying for a probable diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD; n = 133) were exami

Integrating Social Drivers of Health into Topic-Based Education for Internal Medicine Residents: A Faculty Development Approach.

BACKGROUND: Graduate medical education (GME) on social drivers of health (SDOH) is critical to prepare residents in providing comprehensive clinical care but is usually delivered as standalone teaching on health equity. OBJECTIVE: To examine faculty educators' preparedness to integrate SDOH into core didactics of the residency curriculum, identify barriers, test the effect of brief tailored interventions on faculty's willingness to incorporate SDOH into teaching, and capture resident perspectives on SDOH education. METHODS: This mixed-methods educational research was conducted from 5/2024 to

Predicting parents' COVID-19 vaccination intentions and behavior for their children: application of an integrated social cognition model.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying modifiable determinants of parent-for-child vaccination may inform interventions for ongoing management of infectious diseases including COVID-19. We tested an integrated theoretical model in which social cognition constructs (coping appraisals, anticipated regret, moral norms) mediated effects of dispositional constructs (political orientation, conspiracy beliefs, vaccine hesitancy) on parent-for-child COVID-19 vaccination intention and behaviour. METHODS AND MEASURES: In a prospective correlational study, US parents (N = 497) with an unvaccinated child completed polit
