A 9-year old male Arabian horse was referred to the Department of Large Animal Surgery of the University of Utrecht because of multiple nodules on the inner side of the right hind leg. The nodules seemed to follow a cutaneolymphatic pattern. Histopathology of a nodule showed a granulomatous inflammation with the presence of multinucleated giant cells. In PAS- and Grocott-stained sections, spheroid yeast-like organisms with some budding were found throughout the tissue. A preliminary diagnosis of sporotrichosis was made. Immunohistochemistry provides insights in the expression of functional proteins and of their localization in normal thyroid tissue and in thyroid diseases. In hyperfunctional thyroid tissues, staining for sodium/iodide symporter (NIS), pendrin, thyroid peroxidase (TPO), and thyroglobulin (Tg) is increased. In hypofunctioning thyroid tissues, NIS staining is markedly decreased; in benign hypofunctioning adenomas, the expression of the other functional proteins is unmodified or slightly decreased, whereas their expression is profoundly decreased or absent in differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common endocrine malignancy. CONTEXT: The sodium iodide symporter (NIS) mediates active transport of iodide into the thyroid and the lactating mammary glands and is highly expressed in thyroid and breast carcinomas. NIS is clinically very relevant because it allows the treatment with radioiodine of thyroid cancer patients.
