The relative importance of spatial versus temporal structure in the perception of biological motion: an event-related potential study.

We investigated how the spatiotemporal structure of animations of biological motion (BM) affects brain activity. We measured event-related potentials (ERPs) during the perception of BM under four conditions: normal spatial and temporal structure; scrambled spatial and normal temporal structure; normal spatial and scrambled temporal structure; and scrambled spatial and temporal structure. As in a previous study, we identified two negative components at both occipitotemporal regions: N210 reflected general motion processing while N280 reflected the processing of BM. We analyzed the averaged ERPs

Nature of coarse-to-fine constraints on binocular fusion.

Several stereo-matching algorithms posit that processing on coarse (low spatial frequency) scales constrains processing on fine (high spatial frequency) scales by shifting the disparity range over which fine mechanisms operate. If this were the case, stereo increment thresholds for high frequencies in the presence of low frequencies would be constant, regardless of base disparity. In contrast, we find that in the presence of low spatial frequencies, increment thresholds for high spatial frequencies increase with base disparity, as do increment thresholds for high frequencies presented alone. Spatial cognition in autism spectrum disorders: superior, impaired, or just intact?

The profile of spatial ability is of interest across autism spectrum disorders (ASD) because of reported spatial strengths in ASD and due to the recent association of Asperger's syndrome with Nonverbal Learning Disability. Spatial functions were examined in relation to two cognitive theories in autism: the central coherence and executive function (EF) theories. Performance on spatial tasks, EFs, and global/local processing was compared in children with ASD and controls. While the ASD group had faster reaction times on the Embedded Figures task, spatial performance was intact, but not superior,

Linking retinal sampling in neural encoding models to temporal profiles of visual processing in humans.

Retinotopic tuning of neural populations is a key organizing principle of human visual cortex. However, state-of-the-art models that predict neural recordings based on task-optimized Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) do not take this retinotopic organization into account. Furthermore, while retinotopic tuning in visual cortex has been studied extensively using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the temporal dynamics of processing information from distinct parts of the visual field are less well understood. Here, we reveal distinct temporal profiles for foveal and peripheral visual infor

Aberrant early visual neural activity and brain-behavior relationships in anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and anorexia nervosa (AN) share the clinical symptom of disturbed body image, which may be a function of perceptual distortions. Previous studies suggest visual or visuospatial processing abnormalities may be contributory, but have been unable to discern whether these occur early or late in the visual processing stream. We used electroencephalography (EEG) and visual event related potentials (ERP) to investigate early perceptual neural activity associated with processing visual stimuli. METHODS: We performed EEG on 20 AN, 20 BDD, 20 healthy controls,

ERPs and eye movements reflect atypical visual perception in pervasive developmental disorder.

Many studies of eye tracking or event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in subjects with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) have yielded inconsistent results on attentional processing. However, recent studies have indicated that there are specific abnormalities in early processing that are probably related to perception. ERP amplitudes in response to visual stimuli, measured above the occipital (modality-specific) cortex, are reported to be abnormally small in patients with PDD, and the abnormal visual processing is possibly associated with the spatial visual frequency content of stimuli. Differential Performance of Children and Adults in a Vision-Deprived Maze Spatial Navigation Task and Exploration of the Impact of tDCS over the Right Posterior Parietal Cortex on Performance in Adults.

Spatial navigation involves the use of external (allocentric) and internal (egocentric) processing. These processes interact differentially depending on age. In order to explore the effectiveness of these interactions in different age groups (study 1), we compared the performance of children and adults in a two-session spatial maze task. This task was performed under deprived vision, thus preventing visual cues critical for allocentric processing. Number of correct performances and performance time were recorded as outcome measures. We recruited thirty healthy participants for the children (me

Alu repeat-containing RNAs spatially organize actively transcribed genomic regions around nuclear speckles.

Nuclear speckles are nuclear bodies enriched with RNA-processing proteins. Highly transcribed genes and their nascent pre-mRNAs are organized around nuclear speckles, facilitating co-transcriptional RNA processing. However, the mechanisms underlying this spatial organization remain unclear. Here, we identified a class of Alu repeat-containing RNAs that are highly enriched in nuclear speckles. These RNAs interact with actively transcribed genes through their Alu elements, partially via R-loop formation. They also engage with nuclear speckle proteins, promoting their coalescence, phase separatio

Attentional orienting towards emotion: P2 and N400 ERP effects.

Attention can be oriented to different spatial locations yielding faster processing of attended compared to unattended stimuli. Similarly attention can be oriented to a semantic category such as "animals" or "tools". Words from the attended category will also be recognized faster than words from an unattended category. Here, we asked whether it is possible to orient attention to an emotional category, for example, "negative emotional stimuli". Furthermore, we investigated which mechanisms facilitate processing of attended stimuli. In an attentional orienting paradigm in which cues are informat

Lutein and Zeaxanthin Are Positively Associated with Visual-Spatial Functioning in Older Adults: An fMRI Study.

Lutein (L) and zeaxanthin (Z) are two xanthophyll carotenoids that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Previous work has demonstrated their importance for eye health and preventing diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. An emerging literature base has also demonstrated the importance of L and Z in cognition, neural structure, and neural efficiency. The present study aimed to better understand the mechanisms by which L and Z relate to cognition, in particular, visual-spatial processing and decision-making in older adults. We hypothesized that markers of higher levels

Shared early processing of distinct tactile features.

The extent to which spatial tactile properties share neural pathways remains unclear, yet it is the key to understanding how the brain constructs coherent object representations from distributed spatial inputs. One basic spatial property is the perceived tactile distance between two simultaneous touches on the skin. It exhibits adaptation aftereffects: when body areas are repeatedly touched at two points, subsequently presented smaller distances are perceived as smaller than on unadapted areas. We investigated whether tactile distance adaptation influences the perception of other spatial prope

Abnormalities of visual processing and frontostriatal systems in body dysmorphic disorder.

CONTEXT: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric disorder in which individuals are preoccupied with perceived defects in their appearance, often related to their face. Little is known about its pathophysiology, although early research provides evidence of abnormal visual processing. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with BDD have abnormal patterns of brain activation when visually processing their own face with high, low, or normal spatial resolution. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: A university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Seventeen right-handed medication-free subjects wit

The Extent of Task Specificity for Visual and Tactile Sequences in the Auditory Cortex of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

It has been proposed that the auditory cortex in the deaf humans might undergo task-specific reorganization. However, evidence remains scarce as previous experiments used only two very specific tasks (temporal processing and face perception) in visual modality. Here, congenitally deaf/hard of hearing and hearing women and men were enrolled in an fMRI experiment as we sought to fill this evidence gap in two ways. First, we compared activation evoked by a temporal processing task performed in two different modalities, visual and tactile. Second, we contrasted this task with a perceptually simila

Single-Pulse Femtosecond Laser 3D Multi-Foci Light-Field Engineering via Multi-Layer Noise Threshold Filtering.

Three-dimensional processing is a key trend in micro/nano manufacturing, with widespread applications in photonics, manufacturing, and optical storage. However, simultaneously achieving high fabrication resolution, throughput, and quality for three-dimensional structures remains challenging. Here, we propose a three-dimensional multi-foci light-field shaping and high-throughput micro/nano manufacturing method based on a single pulse. This method combines a multi-layer noise threshold filtering algorithm with a multi-layer over-sampling algorithm to generate a three-dimensional multi-foci light

Neural interaction between spatial domain and spatial reference frame in parietal-occipital junction.

On the basis of double dissociations in clinical symptoms of patients with unilateral visuospatial neglect, neuropsychological research distinguishes between different spatial domains (near vs. far) and different spatial reference frames (egocentric vs. allocentric). In this fMRI study, we investigated the neural interaction between spatial domains and spatial reference frames by constructing a virtual three-dimensional world and asking participants to perform either allocentric or egocentric judgments on an object located in either near or far space. Our results suggest that the parietal-occi

Unveiling contralesional omissions six years after stroke. Effects of top-down and bottom-up manipulations.

We examined how spatial processing is affected by attentional load during multitasking in a chronic patient who suffered a right hemisphere stroke six years before the testing. We employed standard paper-and-pencil tests for neglect along with a new version of a well-established computerized dual-task paradigm. The latter combined a spatial processing primary task (reporting lateralized visual targets) with a concurrent secondary task (categorizing visual/auditory stimuli). Attentional load was manipulated through top-down (secondary task) and bottom-up (target size in primary task) factors. P

Emotion perception is mediated by spatial frequency content.

Spatial frequencies have been shown to play an important role in face identification, but very few studies have investigated the role of spatial frequency content in identifying different emotions. In the present study we investigated the role of spatial frequency in identifying happy and sad facial expressions. Two experiments were conducted to investigate (a) the role of specific spatial frequency content in emotion identification, and (b) hemispherical asymmetry in emotion identification. Given the links between global processing, happy emotions, and low frequencies, we hypothesized that lo

First-order basis of second-order temporal loss in amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental visual disorder characterized by monocular visual impairment due to abnormal binocular experience in early childhood, with first-order (luminance-defined) and second-order (contrast-defined) processing deficits. While first-order temporal perception deficits in amblyopia are well-documented, the nature of second-order temporal deficits remains unclear, particularly whether they stem from intrinsic extrastriate dysfunction or secondary effects of first-order spatial impairments. This study investigated temporal perception deficits in anisometropic a

Chocolate cravings are susceptible to visuo-spatial interference.

The study investigated the specificity of visuo-spatial working memory-based techniques as a means to reduce chocolate cravings. Twenty-four self-identified chocolate cravers and 24 non-cravers formed and maintained images of chocolate-containing foods elicited by pictures, while performing a visuo-spatial task (loading the visuo-spatial sketch pad) or an auditory task (loading the phonological loop). Vividness and craving intensity were rated for each image. Concurrent visuo-spatial processing was found to render chocolate images significantly less vivid and cravings less intense compared to

Distinct neural patterns for various information in working memory: A brain connectivity study.

Working memory (WM) relies on brain networks including the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and medial temporal lobe (MTL) as key nodes. Graph theory analysis has recently played an important role in uncovering brain connectivity architectures due to its ability to characterize complex brain networks. Yet, it remains unclear whether the PFC and MTL exhibit distinct effective connectivity patterns during information processing in WM. We employed graph theoretical analysis to investigate connectivity patterns involved in processing of various types of information (i.e., identity, spatial and temporal) in
