The total cobalt and nickel concentration of 11 brands of Asian cement ranged from 8.1 to 14.2 micrograms/g and 14.9 to 28.5 micrograms/g, respectively. These metals exist mainly as insoluble salts; the water-soluble concentration of cobalt and nickel in the cements ranged from 0.39 to 0.65 micrograms/g and from 0-1.2 micrograms/g, respectively. 1.5% (4/272) of construction workers in a prefabrication construction factory had cobalt sensitivity. Magnesium deficiency has been implicated as a possible causative factor in premenstrual tension (PMT). We have assessed serum and red cell magnesium concentration in nine normal premenopausal women and 26 PMT patients, using atomic absorption spectrometry. The following means +/- SEM were obtained from serum and red cell magnesium, respectively, in mg/100 ml: normal subjects: 1.7 +/- 0.04 and 4.5 +/- 0.25 PMT patients: 1.8 +/- 0.05 and 3.1 +/- 0.24. Nickel excretion in urine in four females sensitive to nickel with an intermittent dyshidrotic eruption was measured with flameless atomic absorption. Excretion of nickel was found to be increased in association with outbreaks of vesicles. The results support the idea that the chronic condition was maintained by ingestion of nickel in food.

A silent electric discharge was applied to decompose halogenated methanes including CCl4, CHCl3, CFCl3, CF2Cl2 and CF3Cl, in argon-containing gas mixtures. This study was conducted to determine the serum concentration of zinc in children with acute pyelonephritis. Serum zinc levels of 60 children with acute pyelonephritis and 60 healthy children were compared. Acute pyelonephritis was diagnosed using Tc-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) renal scan. Serum zinc levels were measured by the atomic absorption flame spectrophotometry. The purpose of the present study was to make a preliminary evaluation of blood lead levels in school-aged children from three towns of southwestern Sardinia, Portoscuso, S. Antioco and Calasetta, the first of which is very close to a large industrial complex. The influence of aluminum ions introduced either directly or with sorbitol, in collagen and skin, has been investigated by Thermally Stimulated Current/TSC spectroscopy. The intramolecular mobility of collagen has been found to be significantly reduced by aluminum ions.
