Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP), also called paraneoplastic autoimmune multiorgan syndrome, is a rare disorder associated with underlying neoplasia. The common underlying neoplasms include non-Hodgkins lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and Castlemans disease. Though B-cell lymphoma is the most common underlying malignancy, only one case associated with splenic B-cell lymphoma has been recognized. The prognosis of PNP is very poor, and PNP-associated bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) is not uncommon. Herein, we report a 44-year-old woman who initially presented with multiple oral ulcers, conju

Splenic lymphangiomas are benign neoplasms resulting from congenital malformations of lymphatic channels manifesting as cystic lesions, occurring mostly in childhood. This process usually involves additional sites in a diffuse or multifocal fashion but although rare, can also present isolated to the spleen. The clinical picture varies from asymptomatic identified incidentally to nonspecific symptoms from compression of adjacent organs. Spontaneous rupture of these lesions can lead to hemoperitoneum, acute abdomen and hemorrhagic shock. We present the case of a 33-year-old male who required urg

BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm originating from immune follicular dendritic cells. Its inflammatory pseudotumor-like subtype (IPT-like FDCS) is even more uncommon due to morphological overlap with inflammatory pseudotumors. We report a case of splenic IPT-like FDCS and perform a systematic literature review to clarify the multimodal imaging characteristics of this rare entity.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old asymptomatic man had an incidentally detected splenic mass during routine health screening. Ultrasound showed a well-defined

Primary splenic angiosarcoma is extremely rare but aggressive malignant vascular neoplasm. Here, we report a case of vascular tumor in spleen that was initially misinterpreted as hemangioma. Two years after splenectomy, the patient admitted again with aggravated abdomen pain and severe anemia. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan showed widely metastases. The ensuing biopsy for lesion both in liver and in bone marrow showed the similar pathological findings as that in spleen, which supported the final diagnosis of well-differentiated splenic angiosarcoma with extensive metastases. The pat

Splenosis is defined as the heterotopic implantation of functional splenic tissue in extra-splenic compartments, usually secondary to traumatic or iatrogenic splenic rupture (1). Although it is most commonly found in the abdominal and pelvic cavities, implants have been reported in less common sites such as the thorax, liver, and subcutaneous tissue. Thoracic splenosis represents a diagnostic challenge, as it is usually an incidental finding, rarely symptomatic, and, from an imaging standpoint, can mimic malignant entities such as primary neoplasms or metastatic disease. We present two cases o

BACKGROUND: Accessory spleen is a common congenital anomaly. There are currently no endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) criteria for the diagnosis or differentiation of this benign splenic anomaly from pathologic disorders including neoplasms. The purpose of this study was to characterize EUS features and develop criteria for the diagnosis of accessory spleen.
METHODS: Ten patients undergoing EUS were found to have a possible pancreatic tail or perisplenic mass later confirmed by CT to be either an accessory spleen or a prominent lobule of the spleen. EUS criteria assessed included size, shape, locat

BACKGROUND: Classically, splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma is characterized by the absence of CD5 expression. Cases of apparent splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma showing CD5 expression, as diagnosed by blood studies, have been described; however, in the absence of histological evidence, the correct diagnosis of these cases is controversial because of possible confusion with other CD5-positive small B-cell neoplasms.
DESIGN AND METHODS: We report a series of 24 CD5-positive, t(11;14)-negative cases of splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma diagnosed by flow cytometry studies of blood an

Angiosarcoma of the spleen is a rare malignancy that arises from vascular endothelial origin. This neoplasm is highly malignant and diagnosis is often delayed due to the vague presentation of clinical symptoms. A case report and concise review of the current diagnostic criteria and surgical treatment are provided to aid in the detection and treatment of this malignancy. We present a case of a 56-year-old female who presented with massive splenomegaly secondary to angiosarcoma of the spleen. The patient suffered from longstanding symptomatic anemia and thrombocytopenia. Diagnosis of a splenic a

Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a rare endothelial cell neoplasm in the spleen. Although many cases of LCA are asymptomatic, some present with signs and symptoms related to splenomegaly, whereas others manifest with haematological abnormalities, including anaemia and/or thrombocytopaenia (ie, hypersplenism). We report a case of LCA presenting with chronic thrombocytopaenia, probably due to splenic sequestration of platelets or phagocytosis of platelets by neoplastic cells. Following therapeutic splenectomy, the patient suffered from a marked rebound thrombocytosis and subsequently developed pul

Upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage secondary to splenic vein thrombosis is a curable form of localized portal hypertension when treated with splenectomy. A high index of suspicion is necessary in order to promptly diagnose and treat this underrecognized condition that is most commonly caused by inflammation or neoplasm of the pancreas. The triad of isolated gastric varices, splenomegaly, and normal hepatic function is classic; it is not uncommon, however, for patients to have only some or even none of these conditions. Mesenteric angiography with venous phase imaging is the gold standard of dia

Shear wave elastography is a non-invasive ultrasound technique that quantifies tissue stiffness with high reproducibility. While its role in assessing portal hypertension is well established, the spleen has recently gained attention as a potential biomarker in non-portal conditions. As a vascular and immune organ, the spleen undergoes structural and functional changes in various systemic diseases, making splenic shear wave elastography a promising diagnostic and prognostic tool. This review summarizes current evidence regarding splenic shear wave elastography in healthy individuals and in dise

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous splenic rupture (SSR) is a rare but potentially fatal condition. It is commonly linked to underlying conditions such as infections, neoplasms, or hematologic diseases. SSR can also occur in a healthy spleen without any associated pathology, termed idiopathic splenic rupture. Symptoms range from non-specific abdominal pain to hemodynamic instability, often requiring emergency splenectomy. Early recognition using CT is crucial for improving outcomes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old male presented with severe abdominal pain for 24 h. Examination showed stable hemodynam

Isolated pancreatic tuberculosis (TB) remains a rarity despite the high incidence of tuberculosis in many of the African and Asian countries. Presentation as discrete pancreatic mass often masquerades as pancreatic neoplasm and diagnosis may require histology. Extra-hepatic portal hypertension due to splenic vein thrombosis complicating pancreatic TB has been reported in the literature. We report here a case of isolated pancreatic TB with pancreatic head mass mimicking neoplasm with extra-hepatic portal hypertension. The possibility of TB should be considered in the list of differential diagno

The distinction between mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) and other low-grade B-cell neoplasms is important because MCL has a more aggressive clinical course. In bone marrow biopsy specimens, this distinction can be especially difficult. We examined 70 bone marrow biopsy specimens involved by various B-cell lymphoid neoplasms to assess the utility of cyclin D1 immunostaining in distinguishing MCL from other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. We used a cocktail of two monoclonal anti-cyclin D1 antibodies and a heat- and sonication-induced epitope retrieval procedure. The neoplasms assessed included

BACKGROUND: Portal annular pancreas (PAP) is a rare pancreatic anomaly in which the uncinate process wraps annularly around the portal vein and fuses to the body of the pancreas. PAP is highly relevant to the development of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) in pancreatic surgery. Here, we describe our experience and surgical technique of laparoscopic spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy using Warshaw's procedure for patients with the PAP.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman with PAP was referred to our hospital for a suspicious mucinous cystic neoplasms 1.5 cm in diameter in the p

One hundred sixty Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, were examined for the presence of naturally occurring lesions. The first recognized cases of cecal adenocarcinoma, testicular teratoma, and sebaceous gland pad carcinoma were found. Neoplasms previously reported from the gerbil and also seen in the present study included ovarian theca lutein and granulosa lutein cell tumors, sebaceous gland pad adenoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and renal and splenic hemangiomas. Calcinosis cutis was also observed in two male gerbils.

The T cell immunoglobulin mucin (TIM) proteins are a family of cell surface phosphatidyserine receptors that are important for the recognition and phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Because TIM-4 is expressed by macrophages and dendritic cells in human tissue, we examined its expression in a range of histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms and found moderate to strong immunohistochemical staining in cases of juvenile xanthogranuloma and histiocytic sarcoma, and lower level staining in interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, acute monocytic leukemia (leukemia cutis

BACKGROUND: Splenic papillary angioendothelioma (PILA) is a rare borderline vascular tumor that is often asymptomatic and typically identified incidentally during imaging studies. Owing to its nonspecific clinical presentation and diagnostic complexity, optimal management strategies, particularly in pediatric patients, remain understudied. This report describes a case of pediatric splenic PILA managed with spleen-preserving minimally invasive surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-year-old boy presented with an incidentally detected splenic mass during abdominal ultrasound six months prior to admissi

BACKGROUND: There are few studies in the literature studying the yield of the diagnostic splenectomy in a suspicious lymphoma case. Moreover, their relevance is limited owing to low number of cases, the use of selection criteria, and the lack of modern ancillary studies. We present a histopathological review of splenectomy specimens referred as a case of lymphoma to our center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical charts and laboratory data on all patients of all splenectomy specimens between the years 2003 and 2008 were reviewed. Morphological and immunohistochemical features were analyzed and

Patients presenting with rectal bleeding were prospectively categorized according to the pattern of their presentation into those with outlet bleeding (n = 115), suspicious bleeding (n = 59), hemorrhage (n = 27), and occult bleeding (n = 68). All patients underwent colonoscopy and this was complete in 94 percent. There were 34 patients with carcinoma and 69 with adenomas greater than 1 cm diameter. The percentage of neoplasms proximal to the splenic flexure was 1 percent in outlet bleeding, 24 percent with suspicious bleeding, 75 percent with hemorrhage, and 73 percent with occult bleeding. Ba
