Associations between antimicrobial resistance in fecal Escherichia coli isolates and antimicrobial use in Canadian turkey flocks.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in enteric bacteria continues to be detected in turkey flocks and retail products worldwide, including in Canada. However, studies assessing linkages between on-farm antimicrobial use (AMU) and the development of AMR are lacking. This study aims to identify AMU characteristics that impact the development of AMR in the indicator bacteria Escherichia coli in turkey flocks, building on the Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance methodology for farm-level AMU and AMR data integration. Two analytic approaches were used: (1) multivariable

Genetic determinants of antimicrobial resistance in Gram positive bacteria from organic foods.

Bacterial biocide resistance is becoming a matter of concern. In the present study, a collection of biocide-resistant, Gram-positive bacteria from organic foods (including 11 isolates from genus Bacillus, 25 from Enterococcus and 10 from Staphylococcus) were analyzed for genes associated to biocide resistance efflux pumps and antibiotic resistance. The only qac-genes detected were qacA/B (one Bacillus cereus isolate) and smr (one B. cereus and two Staphylococcus saprophyticus isolates). Efflux pump genes efrA and efrB genes were detected in Staphylococcus (60% of isolates), Bacillus (54.54%) a

Inter- and intraspecies transfer of a Clostridium difficile conjugative transposon conferring resistance to MLSB.

Resistance to the macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B group of antibiotics in Clostridium difficile is generally due to erm(B) genes. Tn6194, a conjugative transposon initially detected in PCR-ribotype 027 isolates, is an erm(B)-containing element also detected in other relevant C. difficile PCR-ribotypes. In this study, the genome of a C. difficile PCR-ribotype 001 strain was sequenced, and an element with two nucleotidic changes compared to Tn6194 was detected. This element was transferred by filter mating assays to recipient strains of C. difficile belonging to PCR-ribotype 009 and 027 an

Distribution status and influencing factors of antibiotic resistance genes in the Chaohu Lake, China.

BACKGROUND: Chaohu Lake (CL) is one of the most polluted areas in China due to its high content of antibiotics. However, the distribution and influencing factors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in this lake are still controversial. METHODS: To solve this problem, we used metagenomic sequencing to investigate the distribution and in-fluencing factors of ARGs in CL. RESULTS: Our findings revealed the existence of nine kinds of ARGs, including 45 specific genes. The most abundant types were multidrug, bacitracin, polymyxin, macrolide lincosamide streptogramin, and aminoglycoside. Multiple

Telithromycin: a ketolide antibiotic for treatment of respiratory tract infections.

Telithromycin, a recently approved ketolide antibiotic derived from 14-membered macrolides, is active against erythromycin-resistant pneumococci. Telithromycin has enhanced activity in vitro because it binds not only to domain V of ribosomal RNA (like macrolides do) but also to domain II. However, it is not active against streptococci and staphylococci with constitutive macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B resistance. Telithromycin, available in an oral formulation, is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in adults for treatment of (1) community-acquired pneumonia due

Phenotypic and genetic characteristics of macrolide and lincosamide resistant Ureaplasma urealyticum isolated in Guangzhou, China.

The phenotypic and genetic characteristics of resistance to macrolides and lincosamides among 72 Ureaplasma urealyticum clinical strains isolated in Guangzhou, China were investigated in this study. Strains were studied by resistance phenotyping, detection of resistance genes (ermB, msrA, msrB, msrC, and msrD), and determining the significance of an association between the presence of resistance genes and the int-Tn gene (a genetic marker of transposon). The ermB, msrA, msrB, msrC, and msrD genes were obtained in 21, 1, 12, 0, and 24 strains, respectively. The msrB and msrD genes were detected

Successful expansion of hospital-associated clone of vanA-positive vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis ST9 to an anthropogenically polluted mangrove in Brazil.

Mangrove ecosystems are hotspots of biodiversity, but have been threatened by anthropogenic activities. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are nosocomial bacteria classified as high priority by the World Health Organization (WHO). Herein, we describe the identification and genomic characteristics of a vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis strain isolated from a highly impacted mangrove ecosystem of the northeastern Brazilian, in 2021. Genomic analysis confirmed the existence of the transposon Tn1546-vanA and clinically relevant antimicrobial resistance genes, such as streptogramins, t

Spread of Multidrug-Resistant Rhodococcus equi, United States.

Multidrug resistance has been detected in the animal and zoonotic human pathogen Rhodococcus equi after mass macrolide/rifampin antibioprophylaxis in endemically affected equine farms in the United States. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) R. equi emerged upon acquisition of pRERm46, a conjugative plasmid conferring resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, and, as we describe, tetracycline. Phylogenomic analyses indicate that the increasing prevalence of MDR R. equi since it was first documented in 2002 is caused by a clone, R. equi 2287, attributable to coselection of pRErm46 with a ch

Gut carriage of antimicrobial resistance genes among young children in urban Maputo, Mozambique: Associations with enteric pathogen carriage and environmental risk factors.

Because poor sanitation is hypothesized as a major direct and indirect pathway of exposure to antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), we sought to determine a) the prevalence of and b) environmental risk factors for gut carriage of key ARGs in a pediatric cohort at high risk of enteric infections due to poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions. We investigated ARGs in stool from young children in crowded, low-income settlements of Maputo, Mozambique, and explored potential associations with concurrent enteric pathogen carriage, diarrhea, and environmental risk factors, including WA

Vagococcus lutrae Isolation in a Cat with Feline Urological Syndrome in Italy: A Case Report.

Vagococcus lutrae is an emerging pathogen that can cause severe disease, especially in immunocompromised patients. Unlike Vagococcus fluvialis, which is recognized as a human and animal pathogen, there are few reports of V. lutrae from human and animal infections. In humans, it has been reported in patients with severe skin lesions and bloodstream infections. In veterinary medicine, V. lutrae was accidentally isolated from a Eurasian otter and a largemouth bass, and only once from the genitourinary tract of a pig with a urinary tract infection. However, the prevalence may be underestimated due

The bacterial microbiome and resistome of house dust mites in Irish homes.

Dust samples were collected from Irish homes. House Dust Mite and storage mites were separated from the dust. The microbiome and resistome of mites and originating dust were assessed using a culture-independent approach. The bacterial microbiome of mites and dust were predominantly populated by Staphylococci. There was a highly significant (P = 0.005; Spearman's rank test) correlation between the bacterial microbiome of mites and the dust. One-hundred and eighteen antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) were associated with mites and 176 with dust. Both contained ARGs encoding resistance for mul

Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome by an iMLS resistant M type 77 Streptococcus pyogenes in the Netherlands.

An increasing number of group A streptococci (GAS) with constitutive or inducible resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B antibiotics (cMLS or iMLS phenotype) is observed in Europe, but MLS resistant GAS associated with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) has not been reported. We describe a patient admitted with STSS caused by an iMLS resistant T28 M77 Streptococcus pyogenes carrying the ermA [subclass TR] gene. A 2-y retrospective analysis among 701 nationwide collected GAS strains revealed an incidence of 3.1% of this M type 77 GAS. Analysis of 17 available M77 strains (12

Dynamic human exposure to airborne bacteria-associated antibiotic resistomes revealed by longitudinal personal monitoring data.

Airborne antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) can critically impact human health. We performed resistome profiling of 283 personal airborne exposure samples from 15 participants spanning 890 days and 66 locations. We found a greater diversity and abundance of airborne bacteria community and antibiotic resistomes in spring than in winter, and temperature contributed largely to the difference. A total of 1123 bacterial genera were detected, with 16 genera dominating. Of which, 7/16 were annotated as major antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) hosts. The participants were exposed to a highly dynamic co

Erythromycin-Susceptible but Clindamycin-Resistant Phenotype of Clinical ermB-PCR-Positive Group B Streptococci Isolates with IS1216E-Inserted ermB.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a pathogen which causes neo natal sepsis, meningitis, and invasive infections in the elderly and people with medical conditions. Macrolide and lincosamide resistance rates of GBS strains have been increasing worldwide. A macrolide resistance gene, erythromycin ribosomal methylase (erm), typically confers macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramin B resistance phenotype. However, in the current study, we recovered and characterized 3 clinical ermB-PCR-positive isolates of GBS with L phenotype. The presence of ermB and lnuB (lincosamide nucle
