Lacrimal sweating in a patient with Reader's syndrome.

A patient is described with a right-sided Reader's syndrome and extensive sweating in the frontal area above the right eye. This pathological sweating can be explained by sprouting of lacrimal parasympathetic fibres in the previous denervated sympathetic sudomotor pathways to that area.

Clinical dysautonomia in diabetes mellitus--a study with seven autonomic reflex function tests.

Thirty-eight patients of NIDDM, 12 of IDDM and 10 healthy age matched controls were subjected to seven standardised autonomic reflex function tests. A scoring criteria was utilised for diagnosing and grading the severity of dysautonomia. Eight patients of IDDM and 24 of NIDDM had dysautonomia. One-third of the patients in each group had grade IV autonomic dysfunction. Severity of autonomic dysfunction was directly related to the duration of disease in NIDDM whereas in IDDM this relation was not seen. Peripheral neuropathy was almost always associated with dysautonomia in NIDDM. On the contrary

Frey syndrome prevalence after partial parotidectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Frey syndrome is a sequela observed after parotidectomy and the reported incidence varies enormously in the literature. Diagnosis is evaluated by presence of the classic triad of gustatory sweating, heating and flushing while feeding and documented by Minor starch-iodine test. AIM: To evaluate the incidence of this syndrome in patients submitted to partial parotidectomy at Centro Otorrinolaringológico de Limeira, from 1994 to 2004, including presence of signs and symptoms and the surgical technique. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Fourteen patients undergoing partial parotidectomy with st

[Frey's syndrome: report of three cases with two distinct etiopathogeneses].

Frey's syndrome is characterized by recurrent episodes of facial gustatory flushing and sweating (most frequent in adults) limited to the cutaneous distribution of the auriculotemporal nerve which, when injured, shows abnormal regeneration. The condition is relatively common in adults following nerve injury in parotid surgery but has rarely been reported in children as a sequel of perinatal birth trauma resulting from forceps assisted delivery. We report three patients with the same syndrome and two different causes. Two children had a history of forceps assisted delivery and one adolescent ha

Morbidity associated with removal of the submandibular gland.

Postoperative complications in 206 submandibular gland excisions, excluding those resulting from benign or malignant tumours, carried out during a 15-year period were reviewed. Most patients (62%) had sialolithiasis. Coexistence of sialolithiasis and nephrolithiasis was documented in 5.5% of cases. Early postoperative complications (particularly infection) developed in 14.6% of the cases, whereas late complications appeared in 25.3% of the cases (residual inflammation in Wharton's duct 7.3%). Neurological complications were observed in 16% of the cases. In 7 cases (3.4%) several nerves were in

Retrocaval Ureter Manifested after Ureteral Reimplantation for Ipsilateral Vesicoureteral Reflux: A Case Report.

Hyperhidrosis is a common and distressing condition involving increased production of sweat. A variety of treatment modalities are used to try to control or reduce sweating. Sweat is secreted by eccrine glands innervated by cholinergic fibers from the sympathetic nervous system. Primary hyperhidrosis most commonly affects palms, axillae and soles. Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by an underlying condition, and treatment involves the removal or control of this condition. The treatment options for primary hyperhidrosis involve a range of topical or systemic medications, psychotherapy and surgi

Extracapsular dissection versus partial superficial parotidectomy for the treatment of benign parotid tumours.

The purpose of this study was to compare the complications of patients treated for a benign parotid tumour (BPT) by extracapsular dissection (ECD) vs. partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP). A comprehensive literature investigation was conducted by searching electronic databases. A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies were performed to assess ECD and PSP for the treatment of BPTs with fixed-effects models. The outcomes analysed were transient or permanent facial nerve injury, Frey syndrome, recurrence rate, infection, and salivary fistula/sialocele. A total of 1641 patie

Treatment of complications of parotid gland surgery.

Although several reports in the literature have documented the surgical technique, and the oncological outcome achieved with parotidectomy, only a few articles have described the complications of parotid gland surgery and their management. Several complications have been reported in parotid surgery. We re-classified the complications of parotidectomy in intra-operative and post-operative (early and late). The commonest complications after parotidectomy are temporary or permanent facial palsy and Frey's syndrome.

Frey syndrome--delayed clinical onset: a case report.

Frey syndrome is a disorder characterized by unilateral sweating and flushing of the facial skin in the area of the parotid gland occurring during meals. The syndrome is a sequela of parotidectomy and may follow other surgical, traumatic, and inflammatory injuries of the parotid and submandibular glands and the cervical and upper thoracic portions of the sympathetic trunk. Pathogenesis is based on regeneration of sectioned parasympathetic fibers with inappropriate innervation of cutaneous sweat glands. Various studies have reported the clinical incidence of Frey syndrome after parotidectomy to

Soft tissue augmentation options for volume replacement following parotidectomy: A review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors primarily arise in the parotid gland with surgery representing the cornerstone of treatment. Parotidectomies often lead to a soft tissue deficit that may benefit from reconstruction to reduce incidence of Frey's syndrome, improve aesthetic outcomes, and allow for appropriate postoperative therapies. Several options exist including avascular tissue transfer, locoregional tissue flaps, and microvascular free flaps. METHODS: This paper is a literature review exploring the efficacy of the various reconstructive options, and includes randomized control trials, pro

An Extremely Delayed Onset of Frey Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We report the case of an 80-year-old man with Frey syndrome that developed 30 years postoperatively, which is an exceptionally long period before its occurrence. Sweating and flushing occurred on only the side of his face where the surgery was performed, and he had no other causative abnormalities. Following treatment with botulinum toxin, the patient's symptoms resolved. Extremely early- and late-onset cases do not fit the conventional paradigm of this pathology. Various surgical methods to prevent this syndrome have been explored, but complete prevention has not yet been achieved. These find

Lipofilling after total parotidectomy: a useful option to prevent functional and aesthetic sequelae.

OBJECTIVE: Parotidectomy is the main treatment for parotid tumours, but its functional and aesthetic sequelae can be very disturbing for patients. METHODS: 15 patients underwent total conservative parotidectomy, harvesting of a superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) flap and lipofilling between May 2014 and June 2020 for a benign parotid tumour. Aesthetic, functional sequelae and cosmetic results were assessed with the House-Brackmann scale, Luna-Ortiz's classification and a semiquantitative questionnaire. Lipofilling resorption was analysed by maxillofacial and neck MRI imaging at 2 ye

Frey syndrome-like developmental dysautonomia in a child with PHACE syndrome.

PHACE syndrome classically presents with a large, segmental facial infantile hemangioma (IH) associated with structural and vascular abnormalities involving the head and neck, heart, and eyes. We evaluated an infant who presented with ptosis caused by a clinically subtle, deep right-sided periorbital IH identified on MRI that also incidentally revealed hypoplasia of the right common carotid and right internal carotid arteries, supporting a diagnosis of PHACE syndrome. She subsequently developed acute-onset, transient right-sided facial erythema without anisocoria, triggered by feeding and emot

Reconstruction using sternocleidomastoid muscle flap versus posterior belly of digastric muscle flap compared with no reconstruction following superficial parotidectomy.

INTRODUCTION: The most common complications following superficial parotidectomy are formation of contour deformity and development of Frey's syndrome. Multiple modalities are being used to prevent these complications. We hereby intend to compare the reconstruction modalities (sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle flap, posterior belly of digastric (PBD) muscle flap) with) No reconstruction (NR) following superficial parotidectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comparative study was designed which included 15 patients requiring parotidectomy. These patients were divided into three groups viz. SCM, PBD,

Superficial parotidectomy versus extracapsular dissection: literature review and search for a gold standard technique.

Benign parotid tumours usually present as a slow-growing, asymptomatic mass in the pre-auricular region. Although they are uncommon, surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment due to the risk of malignant transformation in some benign tumours. Surgical techniques have evolved over the years, with superficial parotidectomy and extracapsular dissection being the current procedures of choice. There is currently no gold standard, and it remains unclear which surgical modality is the superior option. A literature review was performed in relation to the relative merits of each technique and to e
