Background: Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation is a mechanism that neutrophils possess to respond to host infection or inflammation. However, dysregulation of NETosis has been implicated in many disease processes. Although the exact mechanisms of their involvement remain largely unknown, this study aimed to elucidate NET formation over the time course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and their possible role in endothelial injury. Patients and Methods: Plasma samples from COVID-19-positive patients were obtained at six timepoints during hospitalization. Neutrophils we

Several epidemiologic studies have shown the malignant transformation potential of oral lichen planus (OLP); however, it is not clear if this is in fact due to the premalignant nature of OLP or to the presence of some risk cofactors in patients with this pathologic condition. This study was conducted to evaluate the expression of p35 and syndecan-1 in 43 paraffin-embedded tissue specimens of OLP according to streptavidin-biotin technique and to investigate the possible association that might exist between such expression and the clinicopathologic types of OLP as well as some risk cofactors suc

Currently, the management of Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disease, is challenging due to the lack of consensus on blood biomarkers for diagnostic, prognostic, and outcome purposes. The identification of specific and sensitive biomarkers could contribute to an early diagnosis and, consequently, facilitate management and improve prognosis. Several molecules are emerging as potential biomarkers, although current data seem preliminary and need further validation. Further, their combination in a panel seems to strengthen their diagnostic power, allowing them to

INTRODUCTION: Placenta is an essential organ for a healthy pregnancy, thus maternal vascular hypoperfusion has been associated with adverse outcomes. Syndecan-1 and VEGF-A are involved in the placentation process. However, whether these proteins could serve as early markers of placental damage or fetal vascular damage is still unknown.
METHODS: A clinical study was carried out in 66 healthy pregnant women in the second trimester of pregnancy, with follow-up until delivery. The maternal age, height, and weight were collected. Ultrasound examination was performed to obtain fetal growth measures

Cell-surface proteoglycans are involved in lymphocyte migration and activation. This study investigated the expression of syndecan-1, syndecan-4, and glypican in peripheral blood lymphocytes and by lymphocytes in variously inflamed periodontal tissues. Gingival specimens from healthy, gingivitis, or chronic periodontitis sites were stained by means of antibodies against B- and T-lymphocytes and also syndecan-1, syndecan-4, and glypican. Syndecan-1 expression by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from healthy, gingivitis, and chronic periodontitis subjects was assessed by flow cytometry.

We investigated the mRNA expression of cell-surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans, syndecans and glypican, in the adult female monkey submandibular gland using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. Agarose gel electrophoresis of the PCR products of the cDNA generated from RNA was carried out to demonstrate the expression of mRNA in syndecan-1, syndecan-2, syndecan-4 and glypican in this study. In order to compare the mRNA expression level among the cell-surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans, we measured changes in the relative intensity of PCR products with in

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endothelial glycocalyx covers the endothelium and maintains vascular integrity. However, its association with the severity and vulnerability of coronary artery disease (CAD) remains to be elucidated.
METHODS: A total of 259 consecutive patients with stable CAD requiring percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were prospectively enrolled. Patients were classified into 2 groups according to the median value of serum syndecan-1, which is a core component of the endothelial glycocalyx (lower syndecan-1 group [syndecan-1 <99.0 ng/mL], n = 130; higher syndecan-1 group [syndeca

Expression of syndecan-1, 2, 3, and 4 mRNAs during the late stages of tooth germ formation was investigated by in situ hybridization, using [35S]-UTP-labeled cRNA probes. Syndecan-1 mRNA was mainly expressed in the stellate reticulum and stratum intermedium as well as at the cervical region of dental papilla/dental follicle during E18.5-P3.0. Expression in the dental epithelium was enhanced during the postnatal periods, which was supported by real-time RT-PCR analysis. These spatiotemporal expression patterns may suggest specific roles of syndecan-1 in tooth formation such as tooth eruption or

Immunohistochemistry and semiquantitative analysis were used to examine and compare the expression of syndecans 1-4 in the endometrium and myometrium throughout the menstrual cycle. Syndecans molecules show different temporal and spatial expression during the menstrual cycle, and the modulation of syn-2 expression is statistically significantly correlated to morphologic and functional changes of the endometrium, particularly in the periovulatory period.

Syndecans, transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycans, play an important role in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, as receptors/co-receptors of matrix elements, cytokines, growth factors. These functions are partly non-specific and due to the heparan sulfate chains attached to the ectodomain, and partly specific related to the transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains of the core protein. In hemopoietic cells syndecan-1 is expressed in certain B cells, in pre-B cells and plasma cells. In lymphoproliferative diseases this normal syndecan-1 expression of plasma cells is retained in myelomas/p

In the anterior pituitary gland, folliculo-stellate cells and five types of hormone-producing cells are surrounded by an extracellular matrix (ECM) essential for these cells to perform their respective roles. Syndecans-type I transmembrane cell-surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans act as major ECM coreceptors via their respective heparan sulfate chains and efficiently transduce intracellular signals through the convergent action of their transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains. The syndecans comprise four family members in vertebrates: syndecan-1, -2, -3 and -4. However, whether syndecans are p

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-induced disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is associated with critical conditions and linked to a high mortality rate. Anticoagulants such as recombinant human soluble thrombomodulin (rhTM) and antithrombin are used to treat sepsis-associated DIC; however, their efficacy remains controversial. Syndecan-1, a biomarker of endothelial glycocalyx injury, has been proposed as a potential indicator of sepsis severity and prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum syndecan-1 levels and recovery from sepsis-associated DIC in patients treated w

INTRODUCTION: Damage to the endothelial glycocalyx plays a key role in the pathogenesis of sepsis. Syndecan-1 is a widely used biomarker of glycocalyx degradation. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine whether the pathogen type is correlated with differences in glycocalyx disruption in critically ill patients with bacterial bloodstream infection (BSI) and (2) to assess the association of plasma syndecan-1 levels with host response changes implicated in the pathogenesis of sepsis.
METHODS: We measured 24 plasma biomarkers reflective of key pathophysiological domains and whole-bloo

BACKGROUND: Disruption of the endothelial glycocalyx contributes to acute lung injury in experimental sepsis but has not been well studied in humans. To study glycocalyx degradation in sepsis-induced ARDS, we measured plasma levels of syndecan-1, a marker for glycocalyx degradation.
METHODS: The present study is a retrospective observational study of 262 ventilated medical ICU patients at risk of ARDS due to severe sepsis and APACHE II ≥ 25. Plasma syndecan-1 was measured at study enrollment. Primary analysis focused on the association between syndecan-1 levels and the development of ARDS, ot

INTRODUCTION: Glomerulopathy is a group of diseases that affect mainly young adults between the ages of 20 and 40 years. Recently, it has been demonstrated that syndecan-1, a biomarker of endothelial glycocalyx damage, is increased in nephrotic patients with near-normal renal function and it is important to endothelial dysfunction in these patients. Angiopoietin-2 (AGPT2) is an endothelial growth factor that promotes cell derangement. Here we evaluated AGPT2 levels in patients with nephrotic syndrome, near-normal renal function and the possible interaction of AGPT2 with endothelial glycocalyx

Syndecans comprise a major family of cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs). Syndecans are composed of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), heparan sulfate (HS) or both HS and chondroitin sulfate (CS), attached covalently to core proteins. Syndecans regulate many cellular processes, such as adhesion, proliferation, and migration. Syndecans bind and regulate molecules primarily through their HS chains, but do not bind to all HS/heparin-binding molecules. Furthermore, mice ablated for the syndecan-1 or -4 gene do not show major developmental abnormalities, but they do show striking pa
