Temperament and character dimensions and their relationship to major depression and panic disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Since the first publication of Cloninger's psychobiological model of personality, the relationship between temperament and character dimensions and psychiatric disorders has been widely studied. The exact nature of this interaction, however, is still unclear. Different models have been proposed (state-dependency, vulnerability, continuous spectrum etc). OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between temperament and character dimensions with depression and panic disorder. METHOD: Systematic review on interventional studies published up until December 2011 on MEDLINE and ISI data

Exuberant and inhibited toddlers: stability of temperament and risk for problem behavior.

Temperament, effortful control, and problem behaviors at 4.5 years were assessed in 72 children classified as exuberant, inhibited, and low reactive as 2-year-olds. Exuberant toddlers were more positive, socially responsive to novel persons, less shy, and rated as having more problem behaviors, including externalizing and internalizing behaviors, than other children as preschoolers. Two forms of effortful control, the ability to delay a response and the ability to produce a subdominant response, were associated with fewer externalizing behaviors, whereas expressing more negative affect (relati

Alexithymia, temperament and character as predictors of psychopathology in patients with major depression.

The study investigated the capacity of alexithymic personality features, in combination with temperament and character traits, age and gender, to predict psychopathological symptoms in patients with major depression. Consecutive patients (n=339) were investigated using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R), and the Hamilton Depression and Anxiety Rating Scales (HDRS, HARS). The amount of variance in SCL-90-R subscales and Hamilton scales predicted by TAS-20, TCI, age and gender was calculated by linear re

Low-dose quetiapine for patients with dysregulation of hyperthymic and cyclothymic temperaments.

Patients with hyperthymic and cyclothymic temperaments often develop symptoms that fail to meet diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorders. These patients can be conceived as having bipolar disorder NOS (not otherwise specified), a bipolar spectrum disorder, cyclothymic disorder or cluster B personality traits. Here, we describe four of these patients with mild to moderate symptoms affecting mood, behaviour, emotional reactivity and sleep. Treatment with low-dose quetiapine (25-75 mg/day at night) lead to sustained symptom remission. Two of them were on quetiapine monotherapy. Such low doses oc

The relationship between temperament and character and psychopathology in community children with overweight.

This study investigated the relationship between temperament and character and psychopathology in at risk of overweight and overweight children. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory (JTCI) questionnaires were administered to 453 children (10-12 years of age, 203 boys and 250 girls) in Kimpo, South Korea. Subjects were divided into three groups; (1) nonoverweight children (n = 345), (2) children at risk of overweight (n = 72), and (3) overweight children (n = 36). CBCL and the JTCI scores were compared among three groups. In addition, the relati

Examining the utility of a temperament model for modelling non-melancholic depression.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is currently modelled dimensionally, along severity, duration and recurrency dimensions. An alternative model allows dimensional expressions of temperament and personality to influence risk to onset as well as persistence. Here, we examine the utility of a temperament model. METHOD: A questionnaire assessing temperament dimensions and a number of depression variables was administered to a large routine general practice sample and with the temperament measure also completed by a small clinical sample. RESULTS: 'Anxious worrying' and 'irritable' dimensions were identified

Temperament and psychopathology amongst siblings of probands with depressive and anxiety disorders.

Thirteen (42%) of 31 siblings of 29 probands with depression (n = 21) or anxiety disorders (n = 8) attending a clinic met DSM-IIIR criteria for psychiatric disorder, a rate nearly three times greater than reported from community studies. The diagnoses were heterogeneous. Compared with probands, sibling cases had half the level of comorbidity and significantly lower levels of psychosocial impairment. Comparisons of temperamental characteristics showed that higher levels of emotionality, but no other aspect of temperament, was associated with an increased likelihood of a sibling being a case. Hi

Temperament as a predictor of behavior during initial dental examination in children.

Temperament refers to children's behavioral style, or the manner in which they interact with their environment. Temperament has been quantified into nine temperament categories and five temperament constellations by Thomas and Chess. Temperament categories and constellations of children can be measured using one of several parental questionnaires, each of which focuses on age-appropriate behavior. For this study the Behavioral Style Questionnaire (BSQ) was administered to the parents of 50 healthy children (mean age 48.8 months) receiving initial dental examinations. The examinations were vide

Fetal attachment and infant temperament: The mediating role of perinatal mental health.

Maternal bond with the offspring is established prior to childbirth, with fetal attachment becoming particularly salient in the third trimester of pregnancy. There is limited research addressing links between prenatal bonding and infant temperament in the context of perinatal anxiety and depression. The present study addressed this gap, examining relations between prenatal attachment (measured in the third trimester via the Prenatal Attachment Inventory-Revised), perinatal maternal mental health assessed in the third trimester and 2 months postpartum using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the

Structural Brain Correlates of Childhood Inhibited Temperament: An ENIGMA-Anxiety Mega-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood inhibited temperament (cIT) is associated with an increased risk for developing internalizing psychopathology. Neurobiological characteristics identified by structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may elucidate the neural substrates for cIT, but studies are scarce and often focus on particular regions of interest. Moreover, current findings lack replication. This preregistered analysis from the ENIGMA-Anxiety Working Group examined structural brain characteristics associated with cIT using a comprehensive whole-brain approach. METHOD: Temperament assessments (behavior

Temperament traits and remission of depression: A naturalistic six-month longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this naturalistic longitudinal study was to add evidence regarding the potential of Cloninger's temperament traits (novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence and persistence) for predicting the effect of pharmacological treatment on the rates of therapeutic response and remission. METHODS: The study was based on 200 outpatients with unipolar depressive disorders of different severity and course of illness, and extended up to 6 months of follow-up. Patients were assessed in their temperament with the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and their condi

Profiles of Temperament among Youth with Specific Phobias: Implications for CBT Outcomes.

Specific phobias (SPs) are characterized by excessive fear or anxiety regarding an object or situation. SPs often result in a host of negative outcomes in childhood and beyond. Children with SPs are broadly assumed to show dispositional over-regulation and fearfulness relative to children without SPs, but there are few attempts to distinguish dispositional patterns among children with SPs. In the present study, we examined trajectories of differing temperamental profiles for youth receiving a CBT-based treatment for their SP. Participants were 117 treatment seeking youth (M Age = 8.77 years, A

Infant emotion regulation: relations to bedtime emotional availability, attachment security, and temperament.

The present study examines the influences of mothers' emotional availability toward their infants during bedtime, infant attachment security, and interactions between bedtime parenting and attachment with infant temperamental negative affectivity, on infants' emotion regulation strategy use at 12 and 18 months. Infants' emotion regulation strategies were assessed during a frustration task that required infants to regulate their emotions in the absence of parental support. Whereas emotional availability was not directly related to infants' emotion regulation strategies, infant attachment securi

Effects of temperament and emotion regulation styles in determining negative emotional states.

INTRODUCTION: The interplay of reactive and regulatory temperamental processes appears to be essential for a better understanding of emotional states and disorders. In this study we explored the prospective relationship between reactive temperament (negative affect), regulatory temperament (effortful control), negative emotion regulation styles (rumination and suppression) and self-recorded anxiety, worry, and avoidance in naturalistic conditions. METHOD: Thirty-two young adults were first assessed through questionnaires on negative affectivity, effortful control, and two forms of negative em

Temperament, character and anxiety sensitivity in panic disorder: a high-risk study.

BACKGROUND: Adult patients with panic disorder (PD) show high levels of harm avoidance and anxiety sensitivity. Peculiar temperament profiles and high anxiety sensitivity have been proposed as developmental risk factors for PD in adult age. Since familial-genetic influences play a role both in PD and in anxiety sensitivity and temperament profiles, this study aims to investigate the possible association between family history of PD and peculiar temperament-character profiles or high anxiety sensitivity in offspring of patients with PD. SAMPLING AND METHODS: Thirty-four children of patients wi

TEMPS-A and long-term lithium response: positive correlation with hyperthymic temperament.

BACKGROUND: Lithium is still regarded as a cornerstone for the long-term treatment of bipolar disorder. The best response to lithium is associated with clinical features of episodic clinical course, complete remission, bipolar family history and low psychiatric comorbidity. However, a specific personality profile for the best lithium response was not estimated so far. Such a possibility occurred with an advent of temperament scale for bipolar disorder and of an ability to quantitatively assess lithium prophylactic response. METHODS: The study was performed on 71 patients with bipolar mood dis
