This study investigated the protective effect of experimental solutions containing 4 polymers (polyoxirane, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose [HPMC], pectin, and an amino methacrylate copolymer [AMC]) in 2 concentrations (low and high) associated or not with sodium fluoride (F; 225 ppm F-) or sodium fluoride plus stannous chloride (FS; 800 ppm Sn2+) on the dissolution of hydroxyapatite crystals (HA). Deionized water was the control. The pretreated HA was added to a 0.3% citric acid solution (pH 3.8). An automatic titrant machine added aliquots of 0.1 N HCl at a rate of 28 μL/min, in a total reactio

BACKGROUND: Dental erosion is an irreversible condition of loss of teeth hard tissues caused by intrinsic or extrinsic acids attack, without bacterial involvement. Common soft drinks have an acid pH and they release hydrogen ions and act as chelating agents, dissolving teeth mineral component. The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between the consumption of soft drinks in children and the degree of dental erosion.
METHODS: A questionnaire of 15 multiple choice questions was addressed to the parents of the 231 children needing different dental treatments. Responses were compa

Reduced flow (oligosialia) or the complete absence of saliva (xerostomia) decrease the quality of life. While patients suffering from xerostomia are painfully aware of their condition, oligosialia all too often remains unnoticed. The causes of reduced saliva flow are manyfold: somatic or psychosomatic disease, medication, medical therapy, dehydration, age, to name a few. The respective patients suffer from thirst, difficulties in speaking (dysphonia), chewing, tasting (dysgeusia), swallowing (dysphagia) and are at a very high risk for caries as well as for bacterial, viral or fungal infections

PURPOSE: A high prevalence of tooth surface loss due to erosion is well recognized in the United Kingdom (UK), but not in the United States (US). This could be due to prevalence or perception or a combination of both. The aim of this study was to measure the prevalence of erosion of the upper permanent incisors in US and UK samples of 11-13 year old children.
METHODS: Convenience samples of 129 subjects were examined in the US and 125 in the UK by two trained examiners. The palatal and buccal surfaces of the upper permanent incisors were assessed for the presence of erosion. Subjects also com

The destruction of tooth structure through caries and erosive processes is due to two types of acidic challenges that affect the tooth in different ways. Acidic attack by cariogenic bacteria initially produces subsurface lesions that weaken the enamel and, if left unchecked, can progress through the enamel and dentin and eventually into the pulpal cavity. Erosive attack by acidic foods and beverages removes mineral from the surface of enamel and initially causes dulling and loss of tooth luster; if left unchecked, it can progress to a more severe loss of enamel thickness and contour. This arti

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is commonly assumed to be a marker of parafunctional load and, by extension, of mechanical stress on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ); whether greater wear accompanies greater degeneration in the same joint has rarely been tested.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether tooth wear severity is associated with ipsilateral CBCT-detected TMJ degeneration in adults with TMD symptoms.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 80 adults (160 joints; mean age 27 years; 80% female) underwent standardised tooth-wear scoring (Smith and Knight index, 0-4) and blinded CBCT assessment of ost

UNLABELLED: The article presents results obtained from a study on dentin hypersensitivity in patients diagnosed with bulimia nervosa. These patients are characterized by erosions of the hard dental tissues caused by frequent acid exposure due to self-induced vomiting. Erosive lesions are often associated with hypersensitivity due to dentin exposure.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to determine the presence of a direct relationship between dentin hypersensitivity and dental erosion in patients with bulimia nervosa, as erosion plays an important role in the localization of dentin hypersensit

This study was undertaken as a first step in identifying opportunities to decrease the need for replacement of class 3, 4, and 5 composite resin restorations. Data regarding the reasons for original placement or replacement of a restoration, the age of restorations at the time of replacement, and patient/doctor factors that may be associated with a decision to place or replace a restoration were recorded by use of a cross-sectional survey. During a 2-week period 108 dentists recorded reasons for placing or replacing 1360 restorations. Of the 1360 restorations, 42.8% were classified as primary

Evidence suggests that patients suffer the painful symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity when dentine is exposed and the dentinal tubule system is opened to the oral cavity to allow stimuli to trigger a neural response in the pulp via a hydrodynamic mechanism. The processes needed to localise lesions of dentine hypersensitivity include loss of enamel and/or gingival recession. Whilst tooth brushing with or without toothpaste appears to cause minimal wear to enamel (in the absence of acids), circumstantial evidence implicates tooth brushing with gingival recession and exposure of dentine. Other

The Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) is a practical index for screening tooth wear, using a 4-point ordinal scale (0-3). The highest score is recorded in each sextant and a total score (or BEWE sextant cumulative) is calculated per subject. This study aims to investigate if the BEWE sextant cumulative score compares to one comprising a percentage score from all tooth surfaces and as a highest BEWE per subject. The aim is to assess the validity of this score. A total of 350 subjects were recruited from hospital and general practice in south-east England. Buccal, occlusal and lingual/palata
