[Incidence of transient bacteremia following tooth extraction and antibiotic sensitivity of isolated bacteria].

In 12 patients (26%) no bacteria where found in any of the blood culture systems inoculated with blood taken 2-5 minutes after extraction. In the blood from 20 patients however, bot Oxoid and Bio-Merieux (aerobic/anaerobic) cultures proved positive, while in 13 cases only Bio-Merieux and in 2 cases only Oxoid cultures showed bacterial growth. Positive cultures were found only in patients who displayed poor or moderate oral hygiene. The strains most often isolated were Gram-positive; aerobic facultative and obligate anaerobic bacteria were found with similar frequency. Most bacteria proved sens

The effect of Astragalus extractive on alveolar bone rebuilding progress of tooth extracted socket of ovariectomied rats.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) is an estrogen deficiency condition that causes severe loss of bone mass in the vertebrae and long bones. We explored the effect and the possible underlying mechanism of the extracts of Astragalus (AE) on the tooth alveolar bone rebuilding progress of postmenopausal osteoporosis of PMO animal models. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The PMO models were acquired by ovariectomy. After 8 weeks the first left maxillary molars of the rats were extracted and AE was administered orally for 8 weeks. Then the histological morphology and the transcription and expressi

Role of p53 deficiency in socket healing after tooth extractions.

p53 is known to advance the cell arrest and cell senescence in human tumors. In this study, we displayed that osteogenic ability of p53-knockout (p53-/-) mice was significantly increased in the tooth extraction socket compared with wild-type (WT) counterparts. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) from mandibular were collected and exhibited with elevated proliferation potential and colony-forming units compared with the control, as well as stronger mineral deposits and osteogenic markers. Besides, the bone mass and bone parameter in p53-/- mice were markedly enhanced compared with the

Effect of CBX7 deficiency on the socket healing after tooth extractions.

CBX7 is shown to down-regulate the expression of osteopontin (OPN) that is associated with osteoblast function. Here, we studied the role of CBX7 in the wound healing of tooth extraction socket in which osteoblast activity is critical via comparison between CBX7-knockout (CBX7-/-) mice and their wild-type (WT) counterparts of 6 weeks old with maxillary first molar extracted. Mice were euthanized at 7, 14, and 21 days after extractions, and alveolar sockets were assessed by semi-quantitative histomorphometry for hard tissue healing, including new bone fill (Masson's trichrome staining), osteobl

[Usefulness of the bodily movement of the tooth into the hydroxyapatite-packed extracted cavity].

Early application of bodily movement of teeth at an unfinished stage of the healing of the extracted wound i.e. ossification is presumed to increase the risk of jiggling. Using adult dogs, an experimental study was made on bodily movement in the case of HAp packing into the extracted wound cavity to avoid jiggling. When tooth movement was performed immediately after extraction and HAp packing, no encapsulation of HAp with fibrous connective tissue was noted. Either for a weak force or for a strong force, the moved tooth lacked alveolar septum on its compressed side, its dental root being in di

Reactive soft tissue growth: a case report of onset post-extraction of natal tooth.

Natal teeth occur in approximately 1 in 2,000-3,000 live births and may cause oral soft tissue trauma such as Riga-Fede disease. This report describes a late-preterm female neonate with two mandibular incisor natal teeth, which were extracted. Following extraction, an erythematous gingival swelling developed at the site, which enlarged over five months into a firm, pink, pedunculated mass. Excision was performed under local anesthesia using a diode laser. Histopathology revealed a peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF)-a reactive inflammatory hyperplastic lesion that is exceedingly rare in infants

Imaging Characteristics of Tongue Hematoma and Pseudoaneurysm Following Tooth Extraction Requiring Emergency Liquid Embolization.

Our case describes the imaging characteristics of a tongue hematoma and lingual artery pseudoaneurysm following oral surgery, treated with a liquid embolic agent prior to repeat instrumentation. Identifying particular imaging cues that suggest underlying vascular pathology is essential to prevent unnecessary, potentially fatal instrumentation. A liquid embolizing agent can be used to endovascularly treat an unstable pseudoaneurysm in the oral cavity.

Acute retrobulbar hemorrhage after tooth extraction: Case report and treatment of a rare condition.

Retrobulbar hemorrhage (RBH) refers to hemorrhage within the bony orbital cavity and most commonly results from periorbital surgery or trauma. RBH following tooth extraction is a rare occurrence. Patients with RBH will endorse symptoms of periorbital pain, double vision, or vision loss, and present with evidence of proptosis, chemosis, or subconjunctival hemorrhage. Irreversible vision loss may occur if orbital compartment syndrome (OCS) results in the setting of RBH and is not expediently treated. Herein we present a case of a 72-year-old female who developed a RBH and OCS immediately after r

Inferior alveolar nerve transection disturbs innate immune responses and bone healing after tooth extraction.

Coordination between the nervous and innate immune systems to maintain bone homeostasis is largely uncharacterized. The present study investigated the sensory-immune interaction in resting alveolar bone and healing socket by surgical sensory denervation. Bone histomorphometry and immunohistochemistry showed that sensory denervation resulted in moderate suppression of bone remodeling, with a proinflammatory milieu manifested by increased neutrophil recruitment and possible alternations in macrophage phenotypes along the resting bone surface. This denervation effect intensified when bone remodel

Long-term oral bisphosphonates delay healing after tooth extraction: a single institutional prospective study.

UNLABELLED: Tooth extraction in patients receiving bisphosphonates is thought to be a risk factor for osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ); however, ONJ did not develop, even when tooth extraction was performed with continued oral bisphosphonate therapy. A drug holiday from bisphosphonates before tooth extraction may not be necessary. INTRODUCTION: It is controversial whether bisphosphonate withdrawal is necessary prior to invasive procedures such as tooth extraction in order to prevent bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical safety of cont
