A 64-year-old man had progressive unsteadiness over several years, with tingling in his feet. He was a longstanding bodybuilding enthusiast. Clinical assessment and neurophysiology confirmed a cerebellar ataxia and axonal peripheral neuropathy. His serum mercury concentration was significantly raised. We diagnosed chronic mercury toxicity secondary to excessive tuna consumption. We advised him to stop eating tuna and prescribed dimercaptosuccinic acid, after which his serum mercury concentrations subsequently fell. This case report highlights the importance of considering dietary and nutrition

Multifunctional self-healing supramolecular structural toughened resins, formulated to counteract the insulating properties of epoxy polymers and integrating auto-repair mechanisms, are morphologically and spectroscopically characterized using Tunneling Atomic Force Microscopy (TUNA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. Specifically, the multifunctional resin comprises self-healing molecular fillers and electrically conductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in the matrix. The selected self-healing molecules can form non-covalent bonds with the hydroxyl (OH) and

In October 2012, two persons fell ill with symptoms consistent with staphylococcal food poisoning after eating home-canned tuna fish and tomatoes. Laboratory investigation detected the enterotoxins in the home-canned tuna and molecular analysis of the isolated Staphylococcus aureus confirmed it carried toxin genes. Qualitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and enzime linked fluorescent assay methods and quantitative assay identified the enterotoxins in the food leftovers, specifically staphylococcal enterotoxins type A (SEA) and D (SED), respectively 0.49 and 2.04 ng/g. The laboratory resu

Anisakiasis is a gastrointestinal disease caused by infection with anisakid nematodes. Anisakis larvae have been listed as distinct food poisoning agents in the manual of Food Poisoning Statistics, Japan since 2013. The reported numbers of food poisoning cases caused by Anisakis larvae are gradually increasing. A total of 94.0% of the causative larvae species were identified as Anisakis simplex sensu stricto (A. simplex), and 4.4% were identified as Anisakis pegreffii, among human-isolated anisakid nematodes examined in Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health, Japan from 2011 to 2018. INTRODUCTION: Tuna by-products are an important and yet underutilized source of bioactive molecules, pointing out the need for innovative blue- and circular-economy-based approaches for their valorization. Fish protein hydrolysate, obtained through enzymatic hydrolysis, are a valuable source of biologically active peptides. Low-molecular-weight (low-MW) peptides derived from fish-byproducts, in addition to their nutritional value, exhibit remarkable health-promoting effects and have a broad potential for industrial applications, including nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and cosmeceutical.

Parasitic diseases can be a significant constraint on aquaculture industries, which continue to develop in response to the rise in global demand for sustainable protein sources. Blood flukes, Cardicola forsteri and Cardicola orientalis, are economically significant parasites of Southern bluefin tuna (Australia), Pacific bluefin tuna (Japan), and Atlantic bluefin tuna (Mediterranean) as they are responsible for blood vessel obstruction in the gills leading to branchitis and mortalities when untreated. Here, we have defined the mitochondrial genomes for these species-the first for any aporocotyl

Cytochrome c exhibits two positively charged sites: site A containing lysine residues with high pKa values and site L containing ionizable groups with pKaobs values around 7.0. This protein feature implies that cytochrome c can participate in the fusion of mitochondria and have its detachment from the inner membrane regulated by cell acidosis and alkalosis. In this study, we demonstrated that both horse and tuna cytochrome c exhibited two types of binding to inner mitochondrial membranes that contributed to respiration: a high-affinity and low-efficiency pH-independent binding (microscopic dis

In the past 2 years, a 4 year-old boy has had an anaphylactic reaction whenever he contacted food prepared with fish. The symptoms included intense itching in the throat and eyes, which progressed to generalized urticaria and facial angioedema. This was accompanied by cough, wheezing and dyspnea. Many fish preparations caused these episodes including several different kinds of fish (cod, tuna, salmon, trout, eel...), fish soup, chopsticks contaminated with fish preparations and canned fish. Elevated levels of total serum IgE (224 IU/ml) and specific IgE for cod (93.1 IU/ml), tuna (> 100 IU/ml)

Fisheries and aquaculture play a crucial role in global food security, yet species mislabeling remains a persistent challenge, undermining consumer trust and market transparency. Proper food labeling is essential for protecting public health due to the presence of unknown toxic or allergenic substances and preventing illegally sourced products from entering the market. Despite extensive research across Europe, seafood mislabeling in Croatia has remained unexplored. This study aims to provide the first comprehensive assessment of seafood labeling accuracy in Croatia, where fisheries are integra

We report the case of a 30-year-old patient who developed scombrotoxic fish poisoning after eating cooked fresh tuna. Symptoms included a bright red rash, tightness of the chest, palpitations, anxiety, mild headache and dizziness, all of which resolved spontaneously within 2-3 h. Such poisoning results from the consumption of spoiled fish of the families Scomberesocidae or Scombridae - in particular tuna, mackerel, skipjack and bonito - which contain high levels of histidine. Incorrect storage of fish allows bacterial histidine decarboxylase to convert histidine to histamine. The ensuing sympt

Biogenic amines (BAs) are toxicants that are produced during the proteolytic activities of some microorganisms, or naturally during the metabolism of their precursor amino acids. The objective of this study was to estimate the formed BAs in six types of fish retailed in Egypt including tilapia, mullet, mackerel, sardine, herring, and tuna. In addition, total mesophilic (TMC) and total psychrophilic (TPsC) bacterial counts were investigated. Furthermore, the estimated daily intakes (EDI) of BAs via the ingestion of various types of fish in Egypt were calculated, and their potential health risks

The Pacific bonito, Sarda chiliensis, is anatomically intermediate between mackerel and tuna. The specialisations exhibited by tuna are present in the bonito, but to a lesser degree. Slow-twitch muscle strain and activity patterns were determined during steady swimming (tailbeat frequency 1.2-3.2 Hz) at four locations on the body of Sarda chiliensis using sonomicrometry and electromyography. Both strain and the phase of electromygraphic activity were independent of tailbeat frequency. The strain of superficial slow-twitch muscle increased from +/-3.1 % l(0) at 0.35FL to +/-5.8 % l(0) at 0.65FL

Feeding experiments were performed to investigate mercury (Hg) isotope fractionation during trophic transfer and internal distribution of total Hg (THg) in marine fish on exposure to natural seafood. Young-of-the-year amberjack (Seriola dumerili) were fed with either blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus; 2647 ng/g THg) or brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus; 25.1 ng/g THg) for 80 d or 50 d, respectively, and dissected for muscle, liver, kidney, brain, and blood. After 30 d of tuna consumption, Hg isotopes (δ(202) Hg and Δ(199)Hg) of the amberjack organs shifted to the tuna value (δ(202)Hg = 0.5

We combined N, C, and Hg stable isotope measurements to identify the most important factors that influence MeHg accumulation in fish from the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM), and to determine if coastal species residing in the Mississippi River (MR) plume and migratory oceanic species derive their MeHg from the same, or different, sources. In six coastal species and two oceanic species (blackfin and yellowfin tuna), trophic position as measured by delta(15)N explained most of the variance in log[MeHg] (r(2) approximately 0.8), but coastal species and tuna fell along distinct, nearly parallel li

Effective disease management is essential to preserve ecosystem balance and mitigate mortality in fisheries and aquaculture. However, laboratory requirements, including infrastructure, trained personnel, and long turnaround times, constrain current diagnostic protocols. DNA-based assays offer rapid, field-deployable alternatives, but reliance on single-target analysis and challenges with system miniaturization limit their implementation. We developed and validated an integrated lab-on-a-box platform combining duplex recombinase polymerase amplification with a lateral flow assay (duplex RPA-LFA

The aim of this survey was to compare total mercury (THg) in canned fish in terms of species and fishing area. A number of 110 samples of canned fish, which were divided by fish species and fishing area, were analysed. The highest THg content in muscle tissue was found in the escolar. In other fish species, the highest level was detected in tuna. Mercury content in tuna differed significantly from mackerel, sardine, and sprat. Mercury content in herring differed significantly from sprat. The order of the fish according to their THg content corresponds to their status in the aquatic food chain.

A measurement and speciation procedure for the determination of total mercury (HgTOT), inorganic mercury (HgIN), and methylmercury (CH3Hg) was developed and the applicability for on-site determination was demonstrated. A simple, portable sample pretreatment procedure was optimized to extract the analytes. Home-made columns, packed with a new sorbent material called CYXAD (CYPHOS 101 modified Amberlite XAD), were used to separate the two forms of the analyte. HgTOT and CH3Hg were determined by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV), using a solid gold electrode (SGE). Two certified reference materi

This paper describes the effect of inorganic tin chloride on the separation of trimethyl-, tributyl- and triphenyltin-chlorides by reversed-phase ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography with detection by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The detection limits are 1.6 pg, 1.5 pg and 2.3 pg as tin for trimethyltin, tributyltin and triphenyltin, respectively. The relative standard deviation for ten injections of 20 ng of the tin compounds was less than 5%. Inorganic tin was held strongly on the columns used, to a greater extent on the silica column compared to the polymer colum

Some large, wide-ranging teleosts and elasmobranchs are converged to have regional endothermy, retaining metabolic heat via vascular countercurrent heat exchangers. Yet, their adaptive significance remains debated. While previous studies proposed potential benefits of elevated body temperature, enhanced controllability of body temperature enabled by heat exchangers may also be important. Some endothermic teleosts (e.g. bigeye tuna) alter rates of body temperature change depending on dive phases to maximize foraging time in deep, cold waters while minimizing recovery time in shallow, warm water
