Purpose: To determine aqueous humor CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocyte ratio changes in sarcoid and non-sarcoid uveitis with anterior chamber involvement. Methods: The case-control study includes 61 patients with either anterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis with anterior spill, or panuveitis. A total of 21 of them were categorized as sarcoid uveitis and 40 as non-sarcoid uveitis according to diagnostic criteria. CD4+/CD8+ ratio in the aqueous humor was determined using flow cytometry. Results: Significantly higher CD4+/CD8+ ratio in the aqueous humor was observed in patients with sarcoid uveitis (6.3 ± 1

Infectious uveitis is an inflammation of the uveal tract, corresponding to the middle layer of the eye, triggered by a response against an infectious agent. This condition is classified into anterior, intermediate, posterior and panuveitis. The most frequent infectious agents in anterior uveitis are viruses, mainly Herpes simplex virus, although it can also be caused by other pathogens such as Bartonella spp., Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Fusarium spp. In intermediate uveitis, syphilis plays a predominant role, while in posterior uveitis various microorganisms are involved, among them Toxopl

PURPOSE: The role of streptococcal infections in the development of uveitis remains uncertain. Here we describe a series of patients with suspected poststreptococcal uveitis.
OBSERVATION: Four retrospective cases were collected (two males and two females). All patients had a sore throat or an episode of pyrexia 2 to 10 weeks before the onset of uveitis and elevated antistreptolysin-O titer (ASOT); no other cause of uveitis was found. Uveitis was bilateral in all the cases and recurrent in only one. In two patients, inflammation was limited to the anterior segment. One patient had intermediate

PURPOSE: To evaluate uveitis cases presenting at older ages for the first time.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data related to the 90 eyes of 68 patients who presented with a first episode of uveitis at the age of ≥60 years and were seen at the Uveitis Division of the Ulucanlar Eye Hospital from 1996 to 2013.
RESULTS: The location of the uveitis was anterior in 51 (75%) patients. Nine patients (13.2%) presented with panuveitis, 5 (7.3%) with posterior uveitis, and 3 (4.4%) patients with intermediate uveitis. Idiopathic uveitis in 23 (33.8%) and presumed herpetic anterior u

METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with uveitis in pediatric age group.
RESULTS: A total of 184 patients (335 eyes) were included. There were 96 (52.2%) boys and 88 (47.8%) girls, with a mean age of 12.8 ± 3.4 years at presentation. Panuveitis was most common (55.2%), followed by anterior uveitis (29.6%), intermediate uveitis (12.2%) and posterior uveitis (3%). Uveitis was non-granulomatous in 71% and non-infectious in 94.6% of the eyes. The most identifiable specific diagnoses were Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) dise

Ophthalmic manifestations of multiple sclerosis are frequent including acute optic neuritis, ocular motor disturbances and intermediate uveitis. We report an unusual case of multiple sclerosis presenting as acute hypertensive uveitis. A 56-year-old man was referred by his family doctor with a 2-week history of right eye pain and decreased vision. Best-corrected visual acuity was Count Fingers on the right and 6/9-2 on the left. Intraocular pressure was 55mmHg and 14 mmHg on the right and left respectively. He had a right relative pupillary defect and a left internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Vitreo

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explain the associations between different types of uveitis and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27, HLA-DR4, and HLA-DRw53.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 390 uveitis cases was conducted among inpatients and outpatients diagnosed at Weifang Eye Hospital from 2013 to 2016. All 390 patients underwent HLA-B27 examination, and an additional 40 patients underwent examination for HLA-DR4 and HLA-DRw53. Gender, age, corrected visual acuity (CVA), and recurrence frequency were statistically analyzed based on the onset site and etiology classification.
RESULTS: Amo

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the reactivity of T cells from children with paediatric uveitis to the complete Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) EBNA-1 antigen and to the EBNA-1 AA 397-408 epitope in relation to the class II HLA-DRB1*15:01 genetic profile.
METHODS: We used ELISPOT to measure the IFN-γ T cell response of eleven patients with paediatric non-infectious uveitis and three control patients to a peptide pool containing the complete EBV EBNA-1 antigen and to the EBV EBNA-1 AA 397-408 peptide motif. Next-generation sequencing data or, when unavailable, TaqMan assay was used

BACKGROUND: HTLV-1-associated uveitis (HAU) is an inflammatory reaction of the choroid, retina, optic nerve and vitreous that can lead to vision impairment. The worldwide prevalence of HAU varies widely.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of HAU in patients from Salvador, Bahia-Brazil, and describe uveitis type and associated symptoms.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analytical study to determine the prevalence of uveitis in HTLV-1-infected patients recruited in Bahia, Brazil, a region considered endemic for HTLV-1. Patients were enrolled at a local reference center for HTLV (infected) and at a

Complement component 2 (C2) and factor B (CFB) are regulators of complement system and involved in the alternative pathway, which have been identified to be associated with multiple immune-related diseases. This study aimed to investigate the association of these genes with non-infectious intermediate and posterior uveitis. A total of 260 Chinese non-infectious uveitis patients were recruited, including 97 patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH), 70 patients with intermediate uveitis (IU) and 93 patients with Behçet's disease (BD).
