Ocular Manifestations of Pediatric Behçet's Disease.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a multi-systemic, chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, with a multisystemic recurrent course and variable vasculitis. Although the disease onset is usually between the second and fourth decades of life, the preliminary symptoms and signs may appear under the age of 16 years. The prevalence of BD in children is unknown, but it is probably very low. The most common ocular manifestations of pediatric BD include anterior and posterior uveitis, panuveitis, retinal vasculitis, and retinitis. The pathogenesis, treatment, and future directions for pediatric BD are

Exploring the involvement of the alternative complement pathway in non-infectious uveitis pathogenesis.

PURPOSE: Non-infectious uveitis is a complex disease characterized by intraocular inflammation of the uveal area and the leading cause of vision impairment and blindness in young people globally. However, what triggers inflammation and contributes to its recurrence remains unclear. The complement system has been linked to various immunological and inflammatory conditions. In the present study, we have systematically evaluated the role of the alternative complement pathway in the pathogenesis of non-infectious uveitis. METHODOLOGY: Quantitative PCR was done in the peripheral leukocytes to stud

Anti-MHC autoimmunity in Behçet's disease: T cell responses to an HLA-B-derived peptide cross-reactive with retinal-S antigen in patients with uveitis.

Immune response to retinal autoantigens plays a central role in the pathogenesis of uveitis. A synthetic peptide (B27PD) from a common sequence of various HLA-B molecules associated with uveitis, such as HLA-B27 and 51, which shares amino acid homologies with a retinal-S antigen (S-Ag)-derived peptide (PDSAg), was shown to be immunogenic in human and experimental uveitis in the rat. In this study we investigated T cell responses to B27PD and PDSAg in patients with Behçet's disease and posterior uveitis (BD-posterior uveitis; n = 33) in comparison with non-Behçet anterior uveitis (AU, n = 14),

Epidemiology of Pediatric Uveitis.

Uveitis is uncommon in children and its diagnosis and treatment are challenging. Little is known of the epidemiology of pediatric uveitis. Indeed, population-based studies in the literature are rare. However, there are many tertiary referral center reports that describe the patterns of uveitis in childhood, although few are from developed countries, and their comparison presents some issues. Anterior uveitis is the most frequent entity worldwide, especially in Western countries, where juvenile idiopathic arthritis is diffuse. Most cases of intermediate uveitis do not show any association with

[Determining the level of malondialdehyde in patients with different types of tuberculous uveitis].

A clinical follow-up of 52 tuberculous uveitis patients showed that the choice of an appropriate plan of pathogenetic treatment and prognosis of the disease outcome requires differentiation of types of a tuberculous process in the eye. A new method has been suggested for determining the type of the tuberculous uveitis course by studying changes in the blood content of malonic dialdehyde (increase, decrease or absence of changes).
