Test-retest reliability and validity of the 1-minute sit-to-stand test in patients with burn injury: An alternative to the 6-minute walk test for post-acute recovery.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the 1-minute sit-to-stand test (1-STST) in evaluating functional exercise capacity both at admission and discharge. METHODS: A total of 40 burn patients (18 females; 22 males) were included in this study. The ages of the burn patients range from 24 to 49. Functional exercise capacity in burn patients was evaluated using the 1-STST and the 6-minute walk test (6-MWT), both at admission and discharge. All patients performed the 1-STST and retest, and the 6-MWT on the same day, with a 30-minute rest break betwee

Factors affecting exercise performance at the 6-min walk test in long-COVID: a multicenter study from Italy.

The cofactors potentially affecting exercise performance after COVID-19 are still incompletely investigated. The contribution of several clinical and demographic variables to the exercise capacity measured with the 6-min walk test was assessed in multivariable analyses that used the absolute distance walked in 6 min (6MWD) and an impaired performance (6MWD < 60% of the predicted value) as study outcomes. The variables considered were age, sex, preexisting comorbidities, COVID-19 severity, pandemic phase, treatments administered in acute phase, SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, reinfection, time from acu

Changes in temporal and spatial gait coordination during the six‑minute walk test in people with multiple sclerosis.

Although gait coordination impairments represent a critical aspect of walking dysfunction in multiple sclerosis (MS), their variation during prolonged walking remains relatively unexplored. This study investigated changes in gait coordination during the six-minute walk test (6MWT) by jointly analyzing temporal and spatial measures of inter-limb and inter-joint coordination. Sixty-five people with MS and 43 matched unaffected individuals performed the 6MWT while kinematic data were acquired using an inertial measurement unit-based motion capture system. Coordination was quantified using the Pha

6-Minute Walk Test: Exploring Factors Influencing Perceived Intensity in Older Patients Undergoing Cardiac Rehabilitation-A Qualitative Study.

Background/Objectives: In cardiac rehabilitation, the 6-minute walk test (6-MWT) is a standard assessment of initial evaluation. It measures walking distance as a surrogate of submaximal physical performance. Thereby, a subjective rating of perceived exertion, assessed by the Borg Scale, plays an important role. It has been observed that patients with coronary heart disease often rate themselves lower than the person supervising the test. Since this discrepancy might lead to inadequate exercise prescription, this study aims to explore reasons for low self-rating. Methods: In a qualitative stud

Balance confidence classification in people with a lower limb amputation using six minute walk test smartphone sensor signals.

The activities-specific balance confidence scale (ABC) assesses balance confidence during common activities. While low balance confidence can result in activity avoidance, excess confidence can increase fall risk. People with lower limb amputations can present with inconsistent gait, adversely affecting their balance confidence. Previous research demonstrated that clinical outcomes in this population (e.g., stride parameters, fall risk) can be determined from smartphone signals collected during walk tests, but this has not been evaluated for balance confidence. Fifty-eight (58) individuals wit

Gait compensations, pain, and functional performance during the six minute walk test in individuals with unilateral hip osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with unilateral hip osteoarthritis walk with kinematic and spatiotemporal compensations compared to healthy individuals. Our purpose was to determine associations between gait, pain, and functional performance during the six-minute walk test. METHODS: Trunk and hip kinematics and spatiotemporal gait outcomes were recorded from individuals with unilateral hip osteoarthritis using inertial sensors (Xsens Technologies). Pain was collected prior to and at the end of the six-minute walk test. Paired t-tests were conducted to evaluate gait between limbs and between the first

Heart rate reactivity, recovery, and endurance of the incremental shuttle walk test in patients prone to heart failure.

AIMS: Few randomized trials assessed the changes over time in the chronotropic heart rate (HR) reactivity (CHR), HR recovery (HRR) and exercise endurance (EE) in response to the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT). We addressed this issue by analysing the open HOMAGE (Heart OMics in Aging) trial. METHODS: In HOMAGE, 527 patients prone to heart failure were randomized to usual treatment with or without spironolactone (25-50 mg/day). The current sub-study included 113 controls and 114 patients assigned spironolactone (~70% on beta-blockers), who all completed the ISWT at baseline and at Months

Six-minute walk test as outcome measure of fatigability in adults with spinal muscular atrophy treated with nusinersen.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Fatigue (subjective perception) and fatigability (objective motor performance worsening) are relevant aspects of disability in individuals with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The effect of nusinersen on fatigability in SMA patients has been investigated with conflicting results. We aimed to evaluate this in adult with SMA3. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study, including adult ambulant patients with SMA3, data available on 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale-Expanded (HFMSE) at baseline and at least at 6 months of treat

[ATTRv amyloidosis with early improvement demonstrated by the 6-minute walk test following Patisiran therapy: a case report].

We report the case of a 65-year-old man who gradually developed numbness in both hands, lower limb muscle weakness and atrophy, and orthostatic hypotension over two and a half years. These symptoms indicated hereditary ATTR amyloidosis (ATTRv amyloidosis), and the final diagnosis was established through proof of TTR gene mutation (V30M). We initiated patisiran therapy, and a continuous 6-minute walking test performed 3 weeks from the start of therapy demonstrated improvement in the walking distance. This is a single case report showing the improvement in the motor and sensory function on admin

Impaired functional exercise capacity and greater cardiovascular response to the 6-min walk test in congenital generalized lipodystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Generalized Lipodystrophy (CGL) is an ultra-rare disease characterized by metabolic disorders. However, the evaluation of functional exercise capacity, cardiovascular (CV) response to exercise, and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in CGL is scarce. Here we evaluated the performance and CV response to exercise and their association with PAD in CGL compared to healthy individuals. METHODS: Twelve CGL and 12 healthy subjects matched for age and gender were included. Functional exercise capacity, CV response, and PAD were measured using the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and

Contribution of lung function in predicting distance covered in the 6-min walk test in obese Brazilian women.

Obesity affects the respiratory system through various mechanisms, including systemic inflammation and direct mechanical hindrance due to fat deposition in the chest and abdomen. In addition, changes in the neural control of respiration and increases in thoracic blood volume can promote abnormalities in lung function. Thus, determining relationships between the distance covered in the 6-min walk test (6MWT) and demographic and lung function variables may help us better understand the mechanisms involved in reduced functional exercise capacity in obesity. To explore the determinants of the 6-mi

A New Clinically Applicable Measure of Functional Status in Patients With Heart Failure: The 60-Foot Walk Test.

OBJECTIVES: This study reports the development and predictive value of the 60-foot walk test (60ftWT), a brief functional status measure for patients with heart failure (HF). The goal was to develop a test suitable for clinical settings and appropriate for patients with walking impairments. BACKGROUND: The 6-min walk test (6MWT) has considerable predictive value, but requires a long walking course and has limited utility in patients with mobility-related comorbidities. A shorter, more clinically practical test is therefore needed. METHODS: A total of 144 patients (age 57.4 ± 11.4 years; 111

[Interpretation and use of routine pulmonary function tests: Spirometry, static lung volumes, lung diffusion, arterial blood gas, methacholine challenge test and 6-minute walk test].

Resting pulmonary function tests (PFT) include the assessment of ventilatory capacity: spirometry (forced expiratory flows and mobilisable volumes) and static volume assessment, notably using body plethysmography. Spirometry allows the potential definition of obstructive defect, while static volume assessment allows the potential definition of restrictive defect (decrease in total lung capacity) and thoracic hyperinflation (increase in static volumes). It must be kept in mind that this evaluation is incomplete and that an assessment of ventilatory demand is often warranted, especially when fac

Minute-by minute gait variations during the 6-Minute walk test in subjects with myotonic dystrophy type 1.

BACKGROUND: Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 is a rare multisystem disorder, with symptoms including progressive muscle weakness, myotonia and fatigue. Although mobility measures are now common in several tests performed in clinics, their quantification using wearable sensors have not been significantly explored in the literature. This study investigated variation of gait characteristics during prolonged walking in individuals with Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 using a single wearable sensor, and their association with gait fatigability proxies. METHODS: Forty-two subjects with Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1

Functional Exercise Capacity and Exploratory ICF-Aligned Interpretation of the Incremental Shuttle Walk Test in Children With Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Children with asthma may experience functional exercise limitations that are not fully reflected by resting lung function or conventional clinical assessments. Field-based exercise tests provide complementary information regarding functional capacity, and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) offers a biopsychosocial framework to contextualize activity limitations. However, the integration of objective exercise performance with ICF-aligned interpretation in pediatric asthma remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To interpret functional exercise capacity
