OBJECTIVE: Radiographic imaging is an important diagnostic tool in diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO). It is unknown whether DFO cases diagnosed with conventional X-ray versus positive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) differ regarding epidemiology and treatment outcome. From the observation over 62 patients with meningioma of the brain a connection was detected between previous X-ray irradiation of the skin on the head and the occurrence of the meningioma. Predominance of parasagittal localization of the tumors was revealed which, evidently, was associated with the peculiarities of the method of X-ray therapy applied and with the possibility of the growth of the meningiomas from arachnoid-endothelial aggregations in the dura mater. Multiple meningiomas were encountered in 23% of the patients. The cases are described.

This article provides a historical assessment of the role of X-ray therapy in the treatment of bronchial asthma. This analysis revealed that X-ray therapy in the treatment of bronchial asthma spanned the first six decades of the 20th century, and involved nearly 6,000 patients in published clinical case studies. Patients selected typically had at least moderate to severe asthma and were refractory to other commonly employed treatments. The results of more than 60 studies indicated that about 70% of patients had rapid and marked reductions in clinical symptoms with about half of these patients

The outcome of 5 children with visceral hydatid cysts treated with Albendazole and surgical therapy is reviewed. The diagnoses were confirmed by immunological tests, X-ray, ultrasound scanner (US) and computer tomography. The therapeutic approach was correlated to the type of infection pictures. Immunological tests, X-ray and US were performed with the aim to evaluate the response to the therapeutic protocol. Combination of pharmacological and surgical treatment resulted in a complete resolution for all patients without any recurrence and further dissemination of infection.

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDING: We report on a 27-year-old female patient presenting with pneumonia and developing acute respiratory distress syndrome. Using transpulmonary thermodilution, an elevated extravascular lung water was detected (17 ml/kg). Patient required lung-protective mechanical ventilation and received antibiotic therapy. Negative fluid balance was targeted. Under this treatment, respiratory function improved, inflammation parameters declined, and extravascular lung water was recurrent (10 ml/kg). Subsequently, extravascular lung water increased to 29 ml/kg.

98 patients suffering from basal cell carcinomas near the eye and treated with X-rays between 1962-1972 were followed up. The cure rate was 96%. The functional result was good in 86%. Nine patients suffered from epiphora. In four patients an ectropion had developed. The cosmetric result was excellent to satifactory in 98%. The advantages of X-ray therapy are not only the high cure rate but also the ease of ambulatory treatment.

In the present case, a 29-year-old male met with a road traffic accident and sustained a closed comminuted fracture of the upper third (U/3) of the tibia of his left leg. The patient was operated (Open Reduction Internal Fixation, ORIF) with internal nailing. From 1986 to 1989 46 newborn were examined after correction of oesophageal atresia, defects of diaphragm or abdominal wall, to record postoperative cardial insufficiency. In 15 of 40 long-time pH metry analysis (37.5%) and in 11 of 22 x-ray studies (50%) a pathological result was found; in 8 times these findings were followed by operation and in 8 times by conservative therapy. pH metry is suitable even in very small newborn for postoperative screening of cardial function; if the results are positive, x-ray examination is supplementary to diagnosis and therapeutical planning.
