Stereogenic Harmony Fabricated Mechanoresponsive Homochiral Triphenylalanine Analogues with Synergistic Antibacterial Performances: A Potential Weapon for Dermal Wound Management.

The wound recovery phenomenon remains as one of the long challenging concerns worldwide. In search of user-friendly dressing materials, in this report, we fabricated a rational combinatorial strategy utilizing stereogenic harmony in a triphenylalanine fragment and appending it to δ-amino valeric acid at the N-terminus (hydrogelators I-VII) such that a potential scaffold could be fished out from the design. Our investigations revealed that all the hydrogelators displayed not only excellent self-healing performance as well as high mechanical strength at physiological pH but also mechanical stres

The Impact of Electronic and Conventional Cigarette Use towards Saliva Profile and Oral Microbiota in Adolescents.

Noradrenaline release from sympathetic nerve terminals is dependent on Ca(2+) entry through neuronal voltage-gated N-type Ca(2+) channels. The accessory beta(3) subunits of Ca(2+) channels (Ca(V)beta(3)) are preferentially associated with the alpha(1B) subunit to form N-type Ca(2+) channels, and are therefore expected to play a functional role in the stimulation-evoked release of noradrenaline. In this study, we employed Ca(V)beta(3)-null, Ca(V)beta(3)-overexpressing (Ca(V)beta(3)-Tg), and wild-type (WT) mice to investigate the possible roles of Ca(V)beta(3) in the sympathetic regulation of he

Binding of albumin promotes bacterial survival at the epithelial surface.

Human serum albumin (HSA) is the dominating protein in human plasma. Many bacterial species, especially streptococci, express surface proteins that bind HSA with high specificity and affinity, but the biological consequences of these protein-protein interactions are poorly understood. Group G streptococci (GGS), carrying the HSA-binding protein G, colonize the skin and the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, mostly without causing disease. In the case of bacterial invasion, pro-inflammatory cytokines are released that activate the epithelium to produce antibacterial peptides, in particular

Effect of extraction of partly erupted third molars on salivary microbial counts in conscripts.

Viable counts of mutans streptococci, lactobacilli and yeasts in saliva were followed for 5 months after extraction of partly erupted third molars in 49 conscripts aged 19.9 +/- 0.8 years. For controls, 27 conscripts aged 19.7 +/- 1.2 years were studied who did not have indications for third molar extractions. The microbiological analyses were made from paraffin-wax-stimulated saliva using dip-slide techniques. The results showed a statistically significant reduction of the high counts of mutans streptococci (greater than or equal to 10(6) CFU/ml saliva) and lactobacilli (greater than or equal

Cerium chloride pretreatment reduces initial biofilm attachment on hydroxyapatite: a scanning electron microscopy study.

The incorporation of cerium instead of calcium into the crystal lattice of hydroxyapatite appears to increase the resistance of dental hard tissues to caries lesion initiation and progression. The effect on initial biofilm formation is yet unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of cerium(III)chloride (50%CeCl3) pretreatment of hydroxyapatite (HA) discs on subsequent growth of an initial 3 species caries-biofilm. Twelve 9.5 mm diameter hydroxyapatite discs were divided into three groups (n = 4) and treated for 1 min with either 50% CeCl3, ultrapure water (Control), or 0.02% chl

[Radiation caries].

Two mechanisms are discussed regarding etiology and pathogenesis: the direct mechanism by radioeffect on teeth, lying in irradiation field, and the indirect mechanism by alteration of the secretion from salivary glands (hypo- and dyssalivation, xerostomia), alteration of the physiological mouth-flora (dominance of Streptococcus mutans) and deficient mouth and tooth hygiene by the patients. Clinically four types of radiogenic tooth defects are discerned: the superficial carious destruction of the necks of the teeth, the change of the tooth-colour to brown-black, an early gradual fuse of the edg

Comparative evaluation of oral microbiologic profile in children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus versus healthy controls and its relation to oral health status.

BACKGROUND: Oral health is a key indicator of one's overall health and is vitally affected by systemic diseases. A bidirectional relationship is assumed to exist between oral health and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Differences in oral cariogenic microbes and their relation to metabolic control show inconsistent results. Additionally, the relation between diabetes and dental caries is inconclusive. The aim of the present study is to investigate the relation of oral health to microbiologic profile in youngsters with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. METHODS: Sixty-three children were recruited including 2
