Simulated colonoscopy training using a low-cost physical model improves responsiveness of surgery interns.

AIM: Surgery residents are required to become proficient in colonoscopy before completing training. The aim of this study was to evaluate the responsiveness of surgery interns to simulated colonoscopy training. METHOD: Interns, defined as postgraduate year 1 residents without exposure to endoscopy, underwent training in a physical model including colonoscopy, synthetic anatomy trays with luminal tattoos and a hybrid simulator. After baseline testing and mentored training, final testing was performed using five predetermined proficiency criteria. Content-valid metrics defined by the extent of

Variability of inguinal hernia surgical technique: A survey of North American pediatric surgeons.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The tradition of learning from mentors is a unique aspect of surgical training. With this in mind, the authors sought to document our roots by analyzing the technical variability of how pediatric surgeons perform their most frequent operation, the inguinal hernia, and compare these data with the original description by Drs William Ladd and Robert Gross. METHODS: A survey compiling the operative steps of an inguinal hernia repair as well as several key clinical situations involving hernias was mailed to pediatric surgeons in North America. These results then were compared w

Assessing the effectiveness of "BETTER Women", a community-based, primary care-linked peer health coaching programme for chronic disease prevention: protocol for a pragmatic, wait-list controlled, type 1 hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial.

INTRODUCTION: The Building on Existing Tools to Improve Cancer and Chronic Disease Prevention and Screening in Primary Care (BETTER) programme trains allied health professionals working in primary care settings to develop personalised chronic disease 'prevention prescriptions' with patients. However, maintenance of health behaviour changes is difficult without ongoing support. Sustainable options to enhance the BETTER programme and ensure accessibility to underserved populations are needed. We designed the BETTER Women programme, which uses a digital app to match patients with a trained peer h

Considerations for cardiac catheterization laboratory procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic perspectives from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Emerging Leader Mentorship (SCAI ELM) Members and Graduates.

The novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is highly infectious, carries significant morbidity and mortality, and has rapidly resulted in strained health care system and hospital resources. In addition to patient-related care concerns in infected individuals, focus must also relate to diminishing community spread, protection of staff, case selection, and concentration of resources. The current document based on available data and consensus opinion addresses appropriate catheterization laboratory preparedness for treating these patients, including proce

Latina a Latina: developing a breast cancer decision support intervention.

Latinas have the fastest rising incidence of breast cancer. Yet, little data are available about Latinas' breast cancer treatment experiences. Aims were to: (1) identify factors in Latinas' treatment decision making and (2) develop and pilot a decision support intervention. Thirty-seven Latinas diagnosed with breast cancer participated. Qualitative data were used to identify intervention messages. Most women desired help in asking questions. Women were most concerned about chemotherapy side effects. Cultural values (e.g. personalismo, familismo) helped structure intervention messages. In phase

Global consensus framework for the safe and equitable implementation of telesurgery and remote surgical education: a society of robotic surgery supported accelerated Delphi study.

An estimated 160 million additional surgical procedures are required annually to address unmet surgical need globally, with the greatest deficits occurring in low- and middle-income countries. While telesurgery has re-emerged as a feasible model for delivering remote operative expertise, its broader implementation remains constrained by unresolved technical, ethical, regulatory, educational, and governance challenges. We aimed to develop an international multidisciplinary consensus framework to guide the safe, equitable, and scalable implementation of telesurgery and remote surgical education.

Advancing palliative medicine training in adolescent and young adult care: a needs assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs), defined as individuals aged 15-39 years, face unique medical, psychosocial, and existential challenges when living with life-limiting illness. Despite evidence supporting early palliative care integration, Canadian adult palliative care curricula lack formalized AYA-specific competencies. Healthcare providers consistently report insufficient preparation in this area. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional needs assessment survey was administered nationally to physicians who completed Canadian adult palliative care residency training between 201
