The peculiarities and treatment outcomes of the spinal form of chronic non-bacterial osteomyelitis in children: a retrospective cohort study.

Chronic non-bacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is a group of immune-mediated diseases which appears in bone inflammation, destruction and some orthopaedic consequences, especially in the cases of spinal involvement. This study is to compare characteristics and treatment outcomes of CNO patients with spinal involvement. The retrospective cohort study included data from 91 pediatric patients with CNO. The diagnosis is based on Jannson's criteria with morphological confirmation (nonspecific chronic inflammation). Spine involvement detected by X-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and

Mosaic supernumerary r(1)(p13.2q23.3) in a 10-year-old girl with epilepsy facial asymmetry psychomotor retardation kyphoscoliosis dermatofibrosarcoma and multiple exostoses.

We report molecular cytogenetic characterization of mosaic supernumerary r(1)(p13.2q23.3) in a 10-year-old girl with epilepsy, facial asymmetry, psychomotor retardation, kyphoscoliosis, dermatofibrosarcoma and multiple exostoses. The supernumerary r(1) is associated with gene dosage increase of CHRNB2, ADAR and KCNJ10 in the pericentromeric area of 1q, and a breakpoint within CTTNBP2NL at 1p13.2. We speculate that the gene dosage increase of CHRNB2, ADAR and KCNJ10 is most likely responsible for epilepsy, and the breakpoint at 1p13.2 in the supernumerary r(1) is most likely responsible for the

Hirayama's disease: an Italian single center experience and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Hirayama's disease (HD), is a benign, self-limited, motor neuron disease, characterized by asymmetric weakness and atrophy of one or both distal upper extremities. In the present study we report the clinical, electrophysiological and MRI features of a group of Italian patients, with review of the literature. Moreover we propose an optimized MRI protocol for patients with suspected or diagnosed HD in order to make an early diagnosis and a standardized follow up. METHODS: Eight patients with clinical suspicion of Hirayama disease underwent evaluation between January 2007 and Novembe

Spinal Fusion with Sacral Alar Iliac Pelvic Fixation in Severe Neuromuscular Scoliosis.

UNLABELLED: Neuromuscular scoliosis is characterized by rapid progression of curvature during growth and may continue to progress following skeletal maturity. Posterior spinal fusion in patients with cerebral palsy and severe scoliosis results in substantial improvements in health-related quality of life1. Correction of pelvic obliquity can greatly improve sitting balance, reduce pain, and decrease skin breakdown. The sacral alar iliac (SAI) technique has key advantages over prior techniques, including the Galveston and iliac-screw techniques. The SAI technique eliminates the need for subcutan

[Clinical efficacy of anterior cervical mortise-tenon corpectomy and fusion for the treatment of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament].

OBJECTIVES: For the segmental ossification of cervical posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) accompanied by spinal cord compression, anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) can achieve direct decompression through removal of most of the involved vertebral body. However, reconstruction-related complications such as titanium mesh cage subsidence, loss of cervical lordosis, and poor bone fusion are common after surgery. This study aims to investigate the clinical efficacy of a novel anterior cervical mortise-tenon corpectomy and fusion (ACMTF) technique, designed based on principles of bi

The effectiveness of selective thoracic fusion for treating adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a systematic review protocol.

REVIEW QUESTION/OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to assess the effectiveness of selective thoracic fusion as a form of treatment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). This will be compared with all other forms of operative management for major structural thoracic curves. BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine of at least 10 degrees, as measured by the Cobb angle. It can be categorized into three broad categories - neuromuscular, congenital and idiopathic. Of these categories, idiopathic is by far the most common, and is a diagnosis of exclusion. Idi

Achieving "ideal" sagittal alignment does not influence HRQoL outcomes 5 years following PSF for lenke 1 AIS.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have emphasized the importance of thoracic kyphosis (TK) restoration and sagittal alignment for long-term outcomes following posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Although various equations have been introduced to predict the ideal regional alignment of the thoracic or lumbar spine, no study has validated these equations or investigated the influence of achieving these patient-specific ideal regional parameters on patient-reported health-related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes following PSF for AIS. METHODS: A retrospective co

Asymmetry of muscle changes is most pronounced at the apex of degenerative lumbar scoliosis: a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Even though adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS) is an increasingly relevant pathology in the aging spine, its pathophysiology has yet to be fully understood. As some previous studies have shown degeneration of the paraspinal muscles to be associated with ADS, this study aimed to examine side-specific degeneration of the erector spinae (ES), multifidus (MF), and psoas (PS) along the concave and convex aspects of the curvature. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with adult degenerative scoliosis (Cobb > 10°) and a defined apex at L3 who underwent spinal fusion surg

The Predictable Factors of the Postoperative Kyphotic Change of Sagittal Alignment of the Cervical Spine after the Laminoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Laminoplasty is an effective surgical method for treating cervical degenerative disease. However, postoperative complications such as kyphosis, restriction of neck motion, and instability are often reported. Despite sufficient preoperative lordosis, this procedure often aggravates the lordotic curve of the cervical spine and straightens cervical alignment. Hence, it is important to examine preoperative risk factors associated with postoperative kyphotic alignment changes. Our study aimed to investigate preoperative radiologic parameters associated with kyphotic deformity post lamino

Is It Growth or Natural History? Increasing Spinal Deformity After Sanders Stage 7 in Females With AIS.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prognosis and treatment decisions in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) demand a reliable radiographic marker of growth cessation. Specifically, Sanders Stage 7 (SS7) is a useful marker of spine growth cessation in females and is proposed as a bracing endpoint. The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of curve progression noted in female individuals with AIS after achieving SS7. We hypothesize that a subset of patients continues to progress at a greater rate than the natural history at SS7. METHODS: This retrospective review included female patients with A
