Endogenous circadian rhythm sleep disorders through the lens of nonparametric variables of actigraphy: an exploratory study in myotonic dystrophy type 1.

BACKGROUND: A recent case study reported a non-24 h sleep-wake disorder in a patient with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Research on intrinsic circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders (CRSWDs) in DM1 patients is though lacking. This study utilized actigraphy to ascertain the presence of CRSWDs in DM1 patients and establish a comparison with healthy control subjects. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with genetic diagnosis of DM1 and 33 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects wore an actigraph and filled out a sleep diary for two consecutive weeks. Sleep, light exposure, and nonparametric me

Sleep and day-to-day PTSD symptom variability: an ecological momentary assessment and actigraphy monitored study in trauma-exposed young adults.

BACKGROUND: Disrupted sleep and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are bi-directionally linked and have been found to mutually reinforce each other on a day-to-day basis. However, most of the previous research has focused on subjective measures of sleep only. OBJECTIVE: Here, we investigated the temporal relationship between sleep and PTSD symptoms using both subjective (sleep diary) and objective measures of sleep (actigraphy). METHODS: Forty-one non-treatment seeking, trauma exposed young adults (age M = 24.68, SD = 8.15) with a range of PTSD symptom severities (PTSS, 0-53 on PCL-5) wer

Integrating human-smartphone interactions and actigraphy in digital phenotyping of obesity and depression: Social-physical coherence algorithm development and validation study.

Circadian misalignment is associated with obesity and depression, yet few tools directly quantify the alignment between physical and social activity. We developed social-physical coherence, a digital-phenotyping measure defined as the magnitude-squared coherence between wrist-actigraphy physical activity and smartphone-derived social activity at the circadian (~24-hour) frequency, indexing how closely the two rhythms are aligned. In 135 adults (mean age 43.8 ± 12.3 years; 65.2% female; 42.2% with a history of major depression; 18.5% with obesity), physical and social activity were recorded for

Identifying Mood Instability and Circadian Rest-Activity Patterns Using Digital Remote Monitoring and Actigraphy in Participants at Risk for Bipolar Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Mood and/or affective instability and circadian rhythm disruptions are increasingly recognised in psychiatric disorders, notably bipolar disorder (BD), but their interrelationship remains unclear. By definition, both have an integral temporal component and, as such, measuring them longitudinally and remotely is desirable. METHODS: We assessed the feasibility and value of digital devices to capture mood and subjective state (affect) instability and daily rest-activity patterns over a 10-week period in two groups of participants. The first group (n = 37) scored > 7 on the Mood Dis

Are circadian rhythms more favorable with lithium than with other mood stabilizers? An exploratory actigraphy study in euthymic bipolar disorder type 1.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is associated with alterations of circadian rhythms of activity (CRA). Experimental research suggests that lithium (Li) modifies CRA, but this has been rarely explored in BD using actigraphy. METHODS: The sample comprised 88 euthymic BD-I cases with 3 weeks of actigraphy. We used a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to generate CRA dimensions. We then used linear regression analyses to compare these dimensions between groups of individuals defined according to prescribed mood stabilizers: Li monotherapy ("Li" group, n = 28), anticonvulsant or atypical antipsy

Actigraphy measurement of physical activity and energy expenditure in narcolepsy type 1, narcolepsy type 2 and idiopathic hypersomnia: A Sensewear Armband study.

The cause of obesity in narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) patients is not fully understood. The present study investigated if a reduced physical activity could explain weight gain in NT1. Seventy-nine patients were included in this retrospective study and divided into an NT1 group (n = 56) and a non-NT1 group (n = 23), including NT2 and idiopathic hypersomnia (IH). Accelerometry-derived measures of physical activity, total energy expenditure and skin temperature were collected from patients during seven consecutive days without medication. In addition, results from multiple sleep latency tests and the E

Performance evaluation of a machine learning-based methodology using dynamical features to detect nonwear intervals in actigraphy data in a free-living setting.

GOAL AND AIMS: One challenge using wearable sensors is nonwear time. Without a nonwear (e.g., capacitive) sensor, actigraphy data quality can be biased by subjective determinations confounding sleep/wake classification. We developed and evaluated a machine learning algorithm supplemented by dynamic features to discern wear/nonwear episodes. FOCUS TECHNOLOGY: Actigraphy data from wrist actigraph (Spectrum, Philips-Respironics). REFERENCE TECHNOLOGY: The built-in nonwear sensor as "ground truth" to classify nonwear periods using other data, mimicking features of Actiwatch 2. SAMPLE: Data were
